  • In the current domestic and overseas standards concerning seismic design, especially on the capacity & demand spectra in the multi-story building, failure is caused more by story drift than by displacement; and the existing capacity spectrum method (CSM) does not make a close estimate of story drift because response is derived using displacement. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved CSM to estimate story drift and its direct effect on the collapse of structures, yet still maintaining the same advantage and convenience of the existing CSM about a most basic model of multi-story building: shear building. To establish its reliability, the proposed method is applied to an example model and results are then compared with those obtained through nonlinear time-history analysis.

  • Pure-yttrium iron garnet($Y_3Fe_5O_{12}$2, YIG) thick films were grown from a $PbO/B_2O_3$ flux onto (111) SGGG substrate using liquid phase epitaxy. The effect of substrate rotation speed and supercooling on crystallinity, chemical composition and growth rate of the thick films was investigated. The FWHM of films decreased with increasing of growth temperature from 860 to 910${\circ}C$. A substrate rotation speed of 120 rpm at 910${\circ}C$ lead to growth rates up to $60{\mu}m/h$.

  • Bearing damages by shaft misalignment have frequently been happened in marine ships. Specially. after stern tube bearing damage and failure for large crude oil carriers have been reported several times. However. the bearing reaction of the after stern tube bearing cannot be measured by jack-up test due to the hull structure condition. Therefore, when the jack-up test is used for the bearing reaction measurements, the bearing reaction for the after stern tube bearing obtained from the theoretical calculation method have to be used. In this paper, the shaft alignment on the large oil crude carrier is theoretically calculated and the differences between the calculated and actual installed bearing reaction values are compared. The bearing reactions for forward stern tube bearing and intermediate bearing are calculated by the simple formula using the strain gauge bending moments obtained from the measurements. Their reliability is confirmed by comparing the bearing reactions from jack-up test and the bearing reaction for after stern tube bearing is calculated by the same test. Also, the bearing reactions on the after stern tube bearing, forward stern tube bearing and intermediate shaft bearing under all operating conditions are calculated by using the bending moments obtained from the measurements and it is confirmed that the differences of the bearing reaction for all operating conditions are caused from hull deflection. The results of this study should prove useful for the future projects of the alignment calculation including the hull deflection effectiveness.

  • We reported the methodology for the shear test which is one of the evaluation procedure for mechanical reliability of flip-chip package. The shear speed and the tip height are found to be two significant experimental parameters in the shear test. We investigated how these two parameters have an influence on the results, the shear strength and failure mode. In order to prove these experimental inconsistency, simulation using finite element analysis was also conducted to calculate the shear strength and to figure out the distribution of plastic energy inside of the solder ball. The shear strength decreased while the tip height increased or the shear speed decreased. A variation in shear strength due to inconsistent shear conditions made confusion on analyzing experimental results. As a result, it was strongly needed to standardize the shear test method.

  • Animal disease surveillance system, defined as the continuous investigation of a given population to detect the occurrence of disease or infection for control purposes, has been key roles to assess the health status of an animal population and, more recently, in international trade of animal and animal products with regard to risk assessment. Especially, for a system aiming to determine whether or not a disease is present in a population sensitivity of the system should be maintained high enough not to miss an infected animal. Therefore, when planning the implementation of surveillance system a number of factors that affecting surveillance sensitivity should be taken into account. Of these parameters sample size is of important, and different approaches are used to calculate sample size, usually depending on the objective of surveillance systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of the current national serological surveillance programs for four selected bovine diseases assuming a specified sampling plan, to examine factors affecting the probability of detection, and to provide sample sizes required for achieving surveillance goal of detecting at least an infection in a given population. Our results showed that, for example, detecting low level of prevalence (0.2% for bovine tuberculosis) requires selection of all animals per typical Korean cattle farm (n = 17), and thus risk-based target surveillance for high risk groups can be an alternative strategy to increase sensitivity while not increasing overall sampling efforts. The minimum sample size required for detecting at least one positive animal was sharply increased as the disease prevalence is low. More importantly, high reliability of prevalence estimation was expected with increased sampling fraction even when zero-infected animal was identified. The effect of sample size is also discussed in terms of the maximum prevalence when zero-infected animals were identified and on the probability of failure to detect an infection. We suggest that for many serological surveillance systems, diagnostic performance of the testing method, sample size, prevalence, population size, and statistical confidence need to be considered to correctly interpret results of the system.

  • The low alloy-steel material(1.0Cr-0.5Mo, SA213T12), which has widely been used for the waterwall tube in the conventional power plant, do not have enough creep rupture strength for waterwall tubes of the Ultra-supercritical(USC) boilers. According to this reason, the high-strength low alloy-steel(2.25Cr-1.0Mo, SA213T22) has newly been adopted for the waterwall tube in the USC boilers. This paper presents failure analysis on weld-joint of the waterwall tubes in USC boilers. Visual inspections were performed to find out the characteristics of the fracture. Additionally both microscopic characteristics and hardness test were carried out on failed tube samples. Failures seem to happen mainly because the welding process has not been conducted strictly.(preheating, P.W.H.T and so forth). Thus, this paper has the purpose to describe the main cause of the poor welding process and to explain how to prevent similar failures in those weld-joints.

  • Recently European Council(EU) published the RoHS(restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) which is prohibit the use of Pb, Hg, Cd, $Cr^{+6}$, PBB or PBDE in the electrical and electronic equipments. So EU member States shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain 6 hazardous substances. The one of the most important in electronics manufacturing process is soldering. Soldering process use the chemical substances which are applied in fluxing and cleaning processes and it can generate the malfunction of electronics caused by corrosion in the fields conditions. Therefore this study researched on the polarization and Tafel properties of Sn40Pb and Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu(SAC) solder based on the electrochemical theory. We prepared SnPb specimens which was aged in $150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes ana Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu specimens that was aged in $180^{\circ}C,\;220^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. Experimental polarization curves were measured in distilled ionized water and $3.5 wt\%$, 1 mole NaCl electrolyte of $40^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5. Ag/AgCl and graphite were utilized by reference and counter electrode, respectively. To observe the electrochemical reaction, polarization test was conducted from -250 mV to +250 mV. From the polarization curves that were composed of anodic and cathodic curves, we obtained Tafel slop, reversible electrode potential(Ecorr) and exchange current density(Icorr). In these results, corrosion rate for two specimen were compared Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu with SnPb solders

  • In this study, Charpy impact test and numerical studies were performed to examine the effects of failure behavior and energy absorption on the notch position. For this purpose, carbon steel plate(SA-516 Gr. 70) with thickness of 25mm usually used for pressure vessel was welded by SMAW(Shielded Metal-Arc Welding)method and specimens were fabricated from the welded plate. The Charpy impact tests were then performed with specimens having different notch positions varying within HAZ. A series of three-dimensional FE analysis which simulates the Charpy test and crack propagation are carried out as well. We divided HAZ into two, three and four regions to apply mechanical properties of HAZ to FE-analys. Results reveal that the absorbed energies during impact test depend significantly on the notch position. To obtain the results of reliability, HAZ should be divided into at least three regions.
