The Ethics of Multinational Enterprises and ESG Response: Suggestions for Transparent Management

  • Purpose - Through multinational corporate ethics and environmental, social, and governance (ESG), various policy and strategic countermeasures for transparent management in the management and economic fields are presented. Research design, data, and methodology - A literature review is conducted to find important areas for transparent management and to summarize and present transparent management countermeasures based on simple brainstorming opinions from experts. Result - Issues facing transparent management are presented. In particular, multinational enterprises present cases involving prevention of transfer prices and tax avoidance in relation to Industry 4.0. Additionally, a plan is presented to establish a corruption-free economic system through the practice of ESG transparency, ethical management of social enterprises, and transparent management. Conclusion - According to the brainstorming opinions of experts, ESG management and ethical management should be the cornerstone of transparent management in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to institutionally supplement the imposition of digital taxes on fourth industrial companies.

The Study on the Way of Radioactive Waste Disposal in China

  • Because of the massive development of nuclear power plants in China in recent years, China is facing the challenge of radioactive waste disposal. China has established complete regulatory requirements for radioactive waste disposal, but it also has encountered problems and challenges in low-level radioactive waste disposal in terms of management, selection of disposal facility sites, and implementation of a site selection plan. Three low-level radioactive waste disposal facilities that have been operated in China are described, and their activity limits, locations, and capacities are also outlined. The connotations of "regional" and "centralized" disposal policies are discussed in light of the characteristics of the radioactive waste. The characteristics and advantages of the regional and centralized disposal policies are compared. It is concluded that the regional disposal policy adopted in 1992 can no longer meet the current disposal needs, and China should adopt a combination of the two disposal policies to solve the problem of radioactive waste disposal.

  • University libraries have been facing challenges to accomplish both roles of traditional libraries as physical places and virtual libraries which service electronic resources effectively. University libraries need to establish a strategic plan as a positive tool for designing the future of university libraries addressing threats and opportunities at the same time. This study suggested the core elements be involved in strategic plans of university libraries through comparatively analyzing the actual documents of strategic plans of academic libraries in America, England, Canada and Australia. These strategic plans were divided into formal elements and content elements. In addition, this study presented the latest strategic plans of academic libraries such as UMI. OULS, UBCL, and USL. As a result of research, this study provided the directions and basic materials in order to establish strategic planning at university libraries in Korea.

  • Marine Technology is the last hope of mankind for in resolving predestined issues of food, resources, and environmental problems. Facing and realizing this great challenge, domestic industrial, academic and research institutional experts participated in formulating the Marine Technology Development Plan, and the national Science and Technology Committee chaired by the president deliberated and passed this important plan thus setting the foundation for activating and promoting MT development. A project. to develop Marine Technology Road Map(MTRM) is being carried out since June of 2005 for effective undertaking of such endeavor. This paper investigate current issues in MY, MTRM status, establishing and operating MT R&D Expert Institutes, funding resources, etc to provide recommendations for promoting and stimulating MT.

A Case Study on the Reinforcement of Existing Damaged Geogrid Reinforced Soil Wall Using Numerical Analyses (수치해석을 이용한 기존 피해 보강토 옹벽의 보강에 관한 사례 연구)

  • There have been often cases of collapse for geogrid reinforced soil (GRS) retaining wall. Hence, social interest in the reinforcement and restoration of the collapsed GRS wall is increasing day by day. However, there are only few researches. For this reason, a series of numerical analyses using the Plaxis 2D program was conducted in this study to analyze the suitable reinforcement methods that can be applied on the existing damaged GRS wall caused by overturning of the modular blocks facing and the surface settlement at the backfill as the results from the design failure. The restoration plan used in this study is composed of two cases: (Case 1) soil nailing reinforcement and reinforced concrete (RC) wall facing construction on the existing damaged GRS wall; and (Case 2) removal of the entire damaged GRS wall and then reconstruction. The results on the internal stability of the GRS wall show that Case 1 obtained a greater safety factor than Case 2 for tensile force while Case 2 had a greater safety factor than Case 1 for pullout failures. Case 1 was found to be more stable than Case 2 in terms of the global slope safety by shear strength reduction method and the external deformation behavior by numerical analysis. In this study, the existing damaged GRS wall which was reinforced using Case 1 method shows more stable external behavior.

  • Flooding is an unavoidable natural disaster for the city. Flood disasters seriously undermine the city's economy, safety, and sustained development. In the course of development and construction of waterfront space in the same city, the construction of basic disaster prevention facilities cannot be avoided completely even if huge amounts of capital are invested to reduce the economic damage of flooding. The cost of rebuilding the city after the disaster is much higher than the cost of building disaster prevention facilities. In recent years, the theory of elasticity in urban reconstruction and so on has been a subject of city problem solving, creating widespread discussion and attention in academia. In other words, how to transform the concept of elasticity into practice based on theoretical and empirical factors is a real problem facing urban disaster. Through theoretical literature on the waterfront (space) buffer zone of a city (flood-weak area) and the case study of the city's practice, this paper tries to clarify the element of 5R, the theory of elastomeric fire prevention, and present detailed measures accordingly. In addition, the following two problems are addressed while emphasizing the feasibility of implementing the urban waterfront (space) plan of the elastomeric element around the urban water buffer zone. First, the means of disaster prevention planning are used to mitigate conflicts between individual utility of urban waterfront and disaster prevention functions in waterfront buffer zones, and second, the waterfront buffer zone can respond to flood-causing problems in terms of disaster prevention as much as possible through the elastic disaster prevention plan.

  • Although it is Gun area, 'N'-Gun in Gyeongsangnam-Do has continually been implementing the 'health city' project after it entered the program in 2005 to promote healthy lives of its residents. It is evaluated that there has been a considerable achievement; on the other hand, however, as the circumstances surrounding 'N'-Gun are rapidly changing, needs for new advanced 'health city' projects with improved qualities are growing. This study was conducted to suggest a advanced model of 'health city' plan through the case analysis of 'N'-Gun in Gyeongsangnam-Do. For this purpose, international as well as national health-city-related literature and data were broadly gathered and reviewed, and, based on this, we established 'N'-Gun Health City development plan, utilizing BSC(Balanced Scorecard) technique. Main contribution and implication of this study would be the suggestion of the model whereby the problems that many existing health city plans are facing can be systematically evaluated, and more effective methods of developing the plan can be applied based on the evaluation. Also, it is especially expected that the BSC technique would be a very useful framework for developing health city plans in the future.

Exploring Customized Home Modification Plan for Disabled Female Single Elderly Living in Rural Area (농촌거주 장애인 여성독거노인의 맞춤형 주택개조안 모색)

  • Korea is facing various social problems including single elderly household, increase in the number of disabled people and poverty rate and a difference in the proportion of males to females between urban areas and rural areas along with the advent of rapid aging society. Especially, the ratio of poor households in rural areas residing in housing which falls below the minimum housing level and most of them are in the dead zone of housing welfare. In addition, if it is impossible for them to move (relocate) to new housing, the house remodeling is the only measure for improving their housing welfare. However, we don't have enough prior relevant academic and practical experience, and house remodeling requires a series of process including prior planning construction and post-occupancy evaluation, but almost no fundamental research that provides relevant insight has been carried out. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe all field situations that occur in the whole customized house remodeling process for disabled female senior citizens living alone in a rural area. The remodeling process was classified into initial planning stage, field verification and adjustment stage and construction stage as the method to participate in the field directly, and any change in the remodeling plan and its causes at each stage were analyzed. As a result, some remodeling items were changed from the main viewpoint of participating parties before the beginning of construction and for reasons such as the deterioration level of housing site, limitation in building equipment and rearrangement of housing, etc., and the remodeling method and its details were developed. It was identified that constant change that occurred in the remodeling process resulted from 1) unique poor characteristics of existing housing and 2) physical condition of residents and their unique lifestyle characteristics that were two aspects required to be emphasized by customized remodeling.

Understanding the Living Demands of Kazakh Apartments through Plan Alteration Cases (카자흐스탄 아파트 단위세대 평면변경 사례를 통해 살펴본 주거요구의 경향)

  • As an emerging market in central Asia, Kazakhstan's housing market is witnessing increasing demands. Though Korean construction industries have attempted to take advantage of this opportunity, inadequate understanding of the local living demands have kept the industries from successfully establishing themselves in the foreign context. The goal of this research is to derive architectural planning implications regarding the living demands by investigating changes being made to the housing structure. By analyzing 11 apartment unit plans, it was found that Kazakhs had a living demand for more spacious living rooms and functional spaces. In the effort to improve the livingroom environment and usability such as enlarging the livingroom, removing the living room wall for open space or expanding the inner space facing outside is understood that the living room is considered as an important space. The fact that spaces such as dress rooms and utility rooms are being added in the housing market, reflects the demand of functional spaces. These demands are considered as the reflection of the traditional life style of nomad culture and the cold local climate. Therefore, it can be said that the apartment unit plans distributed in the Korean housing market are quite compatible with the Kazakh housing market since they offer spatious living rooms, while the latter founding implies the changes that ought to be made for a successful establishment in the foreign market.

A Study on the Relationship between Urban Block Division and Unit Plans of Korean Modern Traditional Style Houses - Focused on the Ikseon-Dong 166 - (도시형한옥 주거지의 블록구획과 주거평면의 관계에 관한 연구 - 익선동 166번지 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • Ikseon-Dong 166 is one of the traditional urban resident area developed during 1930's. The purpose of this research is to analyze the structural relationship between a conventional housing unit plans and modern block plans based on orthogonal geometry. To fully explore the selling point of the new urban development, the planner or real estate developer in private sector did not abandon or compromise the conventional house layouts, consists of single layer of rooms keeping the main room facing south. This study concludes the following factors connecting the urban and architectural plans. Oblong block plans following east-west direction did not allow the southern exposure of courtyard and main room, which was the absolute requirement for traditional house units, the longer side of block plan followed north-south direction as a result. Considering the possibility of rent, having entrance at the east or west side of individual site enables two separate household maintain their spatial privacy. In addition to the factors mentioned above, when the blocks are to be divided into individual addresses, north-south oblong block plans maintained the length to face the front road minimum while the southern exposure maximized. These factors explains why the private developers maintained their blocks elongated to north-south direction when the block plans laied out by public sectors which did not care that much of southern exposure show random orientation in the view point of solar exposure.
