  • Korea's long underground roads are being promoted around the metropolitan city center to realize advanced transportation networks. Many disaster prevention facilities are applied to secure fire safety of the closed and long-distance underground roads. As the facility response and fire suppression subjects are unclear, additional human and material damages from fire spread are inevitable. Therefore, in this study, we developed a remote automatic fire extinguishing system that uses the fire extinguishing water inside the fire hydrant to monitor the CCTV in the management room and sprays it directly to the fire site through automatic control. The design application method was studied through the performance improvement that can be put into practical use.

  • As the management plan for domestic spent nuclear fuel is delayed, the storage of the operating nuclear power plant is approaching saturation, and the Kori 1 Unit that has reached its end of operation life is preparing for the dismantling plan. The first stage of dismantling is the transfer of spent nuclear fuel stored in storage at plants. The spent fuel management process leads to temporary storage, interim storage, reprocessing and permanent disposal. In this paper, the technical issues to be considered when transporting spent fuel in this process are summarized. The spent fuels are treated as high-level radioactive waste and strictly managed according to international regulations. A series of integrity tests are performed to demonstrate that spent fuel can be safely stored for decades in a dry environment before being transferred to an intermediate storage facility. The safety of spent fuel transport container must be demonstrated under normal transport conditions and virtual accident conditions. IAEA international standards are commonly applied to the design of transport containers, licensing regulations and transport regulations worldwide. In addition, each country operates a physical protection system to reduce and respond to the threat of radioactive terrorism.

  • PURPOSES : Traffic safety facilities are used to prevent traffic accidents before they occur by providing drivers with information on traffic situations and the geometric design of roads. However, some facilities not defined in guidelines do not meet installation criteria, yet are being installed and used in order to increase efficiency in traffic flow and prevent traffic accidents in a specific expressway zone. In this study, we have evaluated the effect of delineation system which are not defined in the guideline criteria. METHODS : Different virtual scenarios were created for roads using expressway median barrier chevron signs, with a driving simulator used to evaluate the installation and operational effect of such signs. Ten experiments were performed with left- and right-curved roads at curve radius intervals of 500 m, from 500 m to 2,500 m. RESULTS : For sections with a curve radius of more than 1,500 m, drivers had a clear tendency toward stable driving regardless of delineation system. When a chevron sign is installed on a protection fence in the road curving left, an expanded installation is recommended up to the section with a curve radius of 1,000 m. According to the analysis results for the RHB (Relative High Beta spectrum), driving concentration also improved up to a curve radius of 1,000 m. CONCLUSIONS :The experiment result indicates the extent of biasing within a lane and the manipulation amount of steering handle, were analyzed and found to be affected by curve radius and road alignment regardless of delineation system.

  • This case study introduces the construction of large cross section tunnel for underground ventilation system in Sillim-Bongcheon Tunnel Project. In order to grant the safety and efficiency in connecting the ventilation shaft (7.8 m of width, and 6.6 m of height) to a tunnel for axial fan facility (20.8 m of width, and 12.3 m of height), gradual enlargement of tunnel cross section was employed between those and temporary support method was determined based on Q system. In addition, some original designs were revised during construction stage to improve the efficiency of excavation in large cross section tunnel. The advance length was optimized and top heading of the tunnel was excavated without partition in accordance with ground condition and numerical stability analysis results. It is believed that some experiences and considerations in this case study will be useful for the future design and construction in similar large cross section tunnel such as large underground ventilation system or road tunnel with four lanes.

  • Railroads have been developed as public transportation and made a great contribution to national economic growth. But after the mid-20th century, its qualities have been getting low because of focusing on the investment and development of cars and airplanes. Its role which is getting the excellent merits on the mass transportation, rapid transit, safety, state period, energy efficiency, and prevention of environmental pollution has been reconsidered. Elements of horizontal alignment are needed in the case where the existing railroad lines should be improved or moved. If its design drawing was lost or damaged, it is impossible to recover. It is not easy to repair for it as disasters. We must understand an existing railroad line to bring a function included a basic geography situation. In this study, we acquire, analyze, and process the digital images of the railroad and then reappear shape of three dimension. And we expect to be utilized to construct the facility information by extracting the alignment elements of existing railroad lines reversely.

  • The SCW ground heat pump system releases ground energy from the ground water of ground heat exchanger. In other word, ground water is used to heating through releases ground energy which oneself has. But the thermal efficiency of system is going to down because repetitive process of ground water will lost ground energy in standing column well system and if heating load is continually increase, energy of ground water may be frozen or there are no benefits to use ground energy as it owes just little energy. To solve these problems, there are need to exchange water to the ground heat exchanger then the way will be used to maintain Efficiency continually as the way of to be supplied with fresh ground water into ground heat exchanger. However, this type causes waste of ground water. Therefore it is essential to discharge water to outside timely on a heat exchanger. Therefor through a study, find out the best time to discharge water to outside and exchange water to ground heat exchanger, and propose to the DB of design of the ground heat exchanger.

  • The passive auxiliary feedwater system (PAFS) is one of the advanced safety features adopted in the APR+, which is intended to completely replace the conventional active auxiliary feedwater system. With an aim of validating the cooling and operational performance of PAFS, an experimental program is in progress at KAERI, which is composed of two kinds of tests; the separate effect test and the integral effect test. The separate effect test, PASCAL ($\underline{P}$AF$\underline{S}$ $\underline{C}$ondensing Heat Removal $\underline{A}$ssessment $\underline{L}$oop), is being performed to experimentally investigate the condensation heat transfer and natural convection phenomena in PAFS. A single, nearly-horizontal U-tube, whose dimensions are the same as the prototypic U-tube of the APR+ PAFS, is simulated in the PASCAL test. The PASCAL experimental result showed that the present design of PAFS satisfied the heat removal requirement for cooling down the reactor core during the anticipated accident transients. The integral effect test is in progress to confirm the operational performance of PAFS, coupled with the reactor coolant systems using the ATLAS facility. As the first integral effect test, an FLB (feedwater line break) accident was simulated for the APR+. From the integral effect test result, it could be concluded that the APR+ has the capability of coping with the hypothetical FLB accident by adopting PAFS and proper set-points of its operation.

  • Background: To find out the leak characteristic of research reactor 'HANARO' building in a typhoon condition Materials and Methods: MELCOR code which normally is used to simulate severe accident behavior in a nuclear power plant was used to simulate the leak rate of air and fission products from reactor hall after the shutdown of the ventilation system of HANARO reactor building. For the simulation, HANARO building was designed by MELCOR code and typhoon condition passed through Daejeon in 2012 was applied. Results and Discussion: It was found that the leak rate is $0.1%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of air, $0.004%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of noble gas and $3.7{\times}10^{-5}%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of aerosol during typhoon passing. The air leak rate of $0.1%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ can be converted into $1.36m^3{\cdot}hr^{-1}$, but the design leak rate in HANARO safety analysis report was considered as $600m^3{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ under the condition of $20m{\cdot}sec^{-1}$ wind speed outside of the building by typhoon. Conclusion: Most of fission products during the maximum hypothesis accident at HANARO reactor will be contained in the reactor hall, so the direct radiation by remained fission products in the reactor hall will be the most important factor in designing emergency preparedness for HANARO reactor.
