Purpose: Dr. Marquardt made the facial 'phi' mask using golden ratio. Most class III patients have bulky faces and want a smaller face. Using a facial golden mask, this study estimated and compared frontal photographs before and after operation for soft tissue measurement. The golden mask can be considered as a reference tool for facial esthetic analyses especially in lower face. Methods: Forty patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery at Samsung Medical Center from January 2006 to December 2009 were included in this study. These patients had Class III malocclusion. Lateral cephalometric radiographs, frontal clinical photos of pre-op and 8~12 month later post-op, and the facial 'phi' mask using golden ratio, were used for analysis. Reduction of the lower face area, occlusal plane changes, amounts of mandible setback and amounts of maxilla posterior impaction were estimated. Results: Lower facial reduction ratio and mandibular setback amounts were significantly different between 1-jaw and 2-jaw groups. Average postoperative changes in the area of lower face between bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) and BSSRO combined maxilla posterior impaction were compared by using an independent simple t-test and $P$ value was 0.016. Therefore, the lower facial reduction ratio and mandibular setback amount were significantly different in maxilla posterior impaction. Conclusion: The two-jaw surgery group showed more reduction of the lower facial area than the 1-jaw surgery group. The amount of lower facial reduction was more related with the amount of mandibular setback. There was no significant relation in lower facial reduction with amount of maxilla posterior impaction, pre-op occlusal plane, post-op occlusal plane and the mandibular angle. A relationship between the change in the lower facial area and the amount of maxilla posterior impaction or the change of mandibular angle occlusal plane at pre-op could not be found because of the difference in the amount of setback between two groups.

Class III malocclusion usually becomes manifested at a very early age, most typically evidenced clinically by the appearance of either an edge-to-edge incisor relationship or an anterior crossbite. Anterior crossbite, by it-self, retards growth of maxilla, and accelerates growth of mandible. So, treatment should be started as early as the patient cooperates, removing any factors or forces that inhibit growth and development in the same physiologic maxillary displacement direction. The facial mask is effective in most developing Class III patients, because the appliance system affects virtually all areas contributing to a Class III malocclusion. Thus, the facial mask can be applied to most developing Class If cases regardless of the specific etiology. In these cases, the results were followed. Anterior crossbite was corrected by anterior movement of maxilla and downward backward rotation of mandible and simultaneously, lower facial height was increased. So, it can be concluded that the facial mask is effective in treating growing patients with a deficient maxilla.
Due to the widespread of COVID-19 pandemics, as the health care supplies. Thus the facial mask has been transformed from personal health product into social epidemic prevention product, and its design is more inclined to be User-centered design. First employed health facial mask which is sold in the market as the method subject, under the concept of " User-centered design", this article analyzes the design elements such as appearance and color of the facial mask. Second used the analysis approach of sample, character and positioning map, this article conducts the comparative analysis research of collected sample and data and find the relationship of User-centered design, purchase tendency and health care facial mask. When the users purchase the mask, through the research on the relationship between the choice of form or color of mask and design element of mask, it can compensate for the blank spot of design and has some references.
Improvements in jaw relationship through clockwise rotation of the mandible may be desirable in some Class III patients with short low facial height. The aim of this study was to examine the treatment effect of face mask for Class III malocclusion patients according to their low facial morphology. Methods: Class III patients in their pubertal growth period were divided into two groups (Group 1, high LFH; Group 2, low LFH) according to lower facial height (LFH) by Ricketts (norm, 47). treatment changes between groups after face mask treatment was compared not only for hard tissue but also for soft tissue. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups for the skeletal and soft tissues of the maxilla. There were no significant differences between the two groups for the skeletal posterior movement of the mandible, but posterior movement of the mandibular soft tissues in group 2 was larger than group 1. There were no significant differences between the two groups for the vertical hard tissue proportion changes of the mandible, but the vertical soft tissue proportion changes of the mandible in group 2 was larger than group 1. There was a significant correlation between the sagittal hard tissue and soft tissue changes of the maxilla and mandible, but there was no significant difference in the vertical changes. Conclusion: The clockwise rotation of the mandible occurred from use of the face mask, and posterior movement of soft tissues of the mandible was higher in Cl III patients with low LFH than with high LFH.

Researches of face recognition on masked faces have been increasingly important due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To realize a stable and practical recognition performance, large amount of facial image data should be acquired for the purpose of training. However, it is difficult for the researchers to obtain masked face images for each human subject. This paper proposes a novel method to synthesize a face image and a virtual mask pattern. In this method, a pair of masked face image and unmasked face image, that are from a single human subject, is fed into a convolutional autoencoder as training data. This allows learning the geometric relationship between face and mask. In the inference step, for a unseen face image, the learned convolutional autoencoder generates a synthetic face image with a mask pattern. The proposed method is able to rapidly generate realistic masked face images. Also, it could be practical when compared to methods which rely on facial feature point detection.

Recently, studies of facial attribute editing have obtained realistic results using generative adversarial net (GAN) and encoder-decoder structure. Spatial attention GAN (SaGAN), one of the latest researches, is the method that can change only desired attribute in a face image by spatial attention mechanism. However, sometimes unnatural results are obtained due to insufficient information on face areas. In this paper, we propose an improved SaGAN (MSaGAN) using a guide mask for learning and applying multitask learning approach to improve the limitations of the existing methods. Through extensive experiments, we evaluated the results of the facial attribute editing in therms of the mask loss function and the neural network structure. It has been shown that the proposed method can efficiently produce more natural results compared to the previous methods.
Objectives: Wearing medical masks has been recommended since the declaration of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) as a pandemic disease. Certified medical masks are evaluated according to filtration efficiency and facial inhalation resistance. However, some people use non-certified common masks. This study aimed to evaluate various non-certified commercial masks based on the certification criteria for medical masks. Methods: Twenty mask products (three anti-droplet, three disposable dental, eight fashion, three cotton, and three children's masks) were selected. For performance evaluation, filtration efficiency and facial inhalation resistance tests were conducted. The evaluation method followed the certification method for KF-certified masks of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and the N95 respirator of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results: None of the 20 masks met the KF94 certification standard set by the MFDS. Four and three masks respectively met the KF80 certification standard and the N95 standard of NIOSH. Filtration efficiency was significantly higher in three-layer masks than in single layer masks. Pleated-type masks had higher filtration efficiency than cone-type masks. There was no correlation between the structure of masks and facial inhalation resistance. Conclusion: While no masks complied with the KF94 certification standard, a few masks met the KF80 and the N95 certification standards of NIOSH. Although some people wear non-certified commercial masks, protection from aerosols is not guaranteed by such masks. Evaluation of the protection efficiency of non-certified mask against microbiological infection is needed for the prevention of infectious disease.
Purpose: All masks are created by craftspeople. Accordingly, most masks are generally predictable in dimensions, and the portraitures usually depict the faces and heads of humans. The authors found some masks representing the features of facial asymmetry, such as hemifacial microsomia and rerely lateral facial cleft. Methods: Reviewing the legends of wearing masks with a medley of grotesque features, the authors could deduce the tone of society in those days. Results: A mask, 'crooked mouth', of Native Americans shows typical lineament of hemifacial microsomia. The deformity of the face was legendarily regarded as resulting from trauma caused by either 'one's fault' or a 'curse of God'. 'Grandmother' mask, used in the Korean masque dance of the Kosung province and Sooyoung province also shows the typical features of hemifacial microsomia which represent the old, deserted wife. 'Kori sanni yakka' mask in Sri Lanka, shows the facial asymmetry. In the legend, the child who became demon captured humans and caused illness through wind, phlegm, and bile to revenge on his father who killed his mother by deception of her maid. Conclusion: The authors presume that the victims of severe facial asymmetry were treated contemptuously at that time.
Although face recognition and face generation have been growing in popularity, the privacy issues of using facial images in the wild have been a concurrent topic. In this paper, we propose a face editing network that can reduce privacy issues by generating face images with various properties from a small number of real face images and facial mask information. Unlike the existing methods of learning face attributes using a lot of real face images, the proposed method generates new facial images using a facial segmentation mask and texture images from five parts as styles. The images are then trained with our network to learn the styles and locations of each reference image. Once the proposed framework is trained, we can generate various face images using only a small number of real face images and segmentation information. In our extensive experiments, we show that the proposed method can not only generate new faces, but also localize facial attribute editing, despite using very few real face images.

In this paper, we apply DCM(Dilation of Color and Motion information) mask and Active Contour Models(Snakes) to extract facial outline in moving pictures with complex background. First, we propose DCM mask which is made by applying morphology dilation and AND operation to combine facial color and motion information, and use this mask to detect facial region without complex background and to remove noise in image energy. Also, initial curves are automatically set according to rotational degree estimated with geometric ratio of facial elements to overcome the demerit of Active Contour Models which is sensitive to initial curves. And edge intensity and brightness are both used as image energy of snakes to extract contour at parts with weak edges. For experiments, we acquired total 480 frames with various head-poses of sixteen persons with both eyes shown by taking pictures in inner space and also by capturing broadcasting images. As a result, it showed that more elaborate facial contour is extracted at average processing time of 0.28 seconds when using interpolated initial curves according to facial rotation degree and using combined image energy of edge intensity and brightness.
