  • The biocompatibility and plasmonic properties of Au nanoparticles make them useful for photothermal therapy, drug delivery, imaging, and many other fields. This study demonstrated a novel, facile, economic, and green synthetic method to produce gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with spherical and triangular shapes were effectively synthesized using only Schisandra chenesis fruit extract as the capping and reducing agent. The shape of the AuNPs could be engineered simply by adjusting the molar concentration of HAuCl4 in the reaction mixture. The as-synthesized AuNPs were characterized using UV-VIS spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA). This study revealed that by using the HAuCl4 concentration in the AuNP synthesis, the shape and size of the AuNPs could be controlled by the concentration of HAuCl4 and Schisandra chinensis fruit extract as a surfactant. The as-synthesized AuNPs samples had sufficient colloidal stability without noticeable aggregation and showed the predominant growth of the (111) plane of face-centered cubic gold during the crystal growth. The catalytic efficiency of the AuNPs synthesized using Schisandra chenesis fruit extract was examined by monitoring the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol using Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis spectroscopy). The synthesized AuNPs showed good catalytic activity to reduce 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, revealing their practical usefulness.

  • Synthesis of north-5'-methylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexyl adenine and hypoxanthine nucleosides with an ethenyl group at C3' position was successfully achieved by a highly facile method. Methylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexanone (${\pm}$)-7 with three contiguous chiral centers and its epimer (${\pm}$)-6 was remarkably simply constructed only by four steps involving a carbenoid insertion reaction in the presence of rhodium (II) acetate dimer as a metal catalyst, giving a correct relative stereochemistry of the generated three chiral centers. Due to steric hindrance from the concave face of the bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanone system, a Grignard reaction of (${\pm}$)-7 with ethenylmagnesium bromide showed exclusive diastereoselectivity towards the b-face. The Grignard reaction chemoselectively proceeded without reacting with ester functionality. Coupling reaction of glycosyl donor (${\pm}$)-11 with 6-chloropurine nucleobase afforded only the desired $N^9$-alkylated nucleoside without the formation of $N^7$-regioisomer. By the conventional method, 6-chloro group was converted into 6-amino and 6-hydroxy groups to give the desired adenine and hypoxanthine bicyclo[3.1.0]hexyl carbanucleosides with 3'-ethenyl group, respectively.

  • Parke and Waters' model[1] of muscle-based face deformation was used to develop a system that can synthesize facial expressions when the pleasure-displeasure and arousal-sleep coordinate values of internal states are specified. Facial expressions sampled from a database developed by Chung, Oh, Lee and Byun [2] and its underlying model of internal states were used to find rules for face deformation. The internal - state model included dimensional and categorical values of the sampled facial expressions. To find out deformation rules for each of the expressions, changes in the lengths of 21 facial muscles were measured. Then, a set of multiple regression analyses was performed to find out the relationship between the muscle lengths and internal states. The deformation rules obtained from the process turned out to produce natural-looking expressions when the internal states were specified by the pleasure-displeasure and arousal-sleep coordinate values. Such a result implies that the rules derived from a large scale database and regression analyses capturing the variations of individual muscles can be served as a useful and powerful tool for synthesizing facial expressions.

  • The images acquired from the speaker's mouth region revealed the unique patterns according to the corresponding voices. By using this principle, the several methods were proposed in which speech signals were recognized or synthesized from the images acquired at the speaker's lower face. In this study, an image-based speech synthesis method was proposed in which the depth images were cooperatively used. Since depth images yielded depth information that cannot be acquired from optical image, it can be used for the purpose of supplementing flat optical images. In this paper, the usefulness of depth images from the perspective of speech synthesis was evaluated. The validation experiment was carried out on 60 Korean isolated words, it was confirmed that the performance in terms of both subjective and objective evaluation was comparable to the optical image-based method. When the two images were used in combination, performance improvements were observed compared with when each image was used alone.

  • In the era of ubiquitous computing, human-friendly man-machine interface is getting more attention due to its possibility to offer convenient services. For this, in this paper, we introduce a 'Half-Mirror Interface System (HMIS)' as a novel type of human-friendly man-machine interfaces. Basically, HMIS consists of half-mirror, USB-Webcam, microphone, 2ch-speaker, and high-speed processing unit. In our HMIS, two principal operation modes are selected by the existence of the user in front of it. The first one, 'mirror-mode', is activated when the user's face is detected via USB-Webcam. In this mode, HMIS provides three basic functions such as 1) make-up assistance by magnifying an interested facial component and TTS (Text-To-Speech) guide for appropriate make-up, 2) Daily weather information provider via WWW service, 3) Health monitoring/diagnosis service using Chinese medicine knowledge. The second one, 'display-mode' is designed to show decorative pictures, family photos, art paintings and so on. This mode is activated when the user's face is not detected for a time being. In display-mode, we also added a 'healing-window' function and 'healing-music player' function for user's psychological comfort and/or relaxation. All these functions are accessible by commercially available voice synthesis/recognition package.

  • In this paper, a novel framework that synthesizes and clones facial expression in parameter spaces is presented. To overcome the difficulties in manipulating face geometry models with high degrees of freedom, many parameterization methods have been introduced. In this paper, a data-driven parameterization method is proposed that represents a variety of expressions with a small set of fundamental independent movements based on the ICA technique. The face deformation due to the parameters is also learned from the data to capture the nonlinearity of facial movements. With this parameterization, one can control the expression of an animated character's face by the parameters. By separating the parameterization and the deformation learning process, we believe that we can adopt this framework for a variety applications including expression synthesis and cloning. The experimental result demonstrates the efficient production of realistic expressions using the proposed method.

  • Nonverbal communications such as eye gazing, posture, and gestures send forceful messages. In regard to nonverbal communication, eye gazing is one of the most strong forms that an individual can use. However, lack of mutual gazing occurs when we use video conferencing system. The displacement between locations of the eyes and a camera gets in the way of eye contact. The lack of eye gazing can give unapproachable and unpleasant feeling. In this paper, we propose an eye gazing correction for video conferencing. We use two cameras installed at the top and the bottom of the television. The captured two images are rendered with 2D warping at virtual position. We implement view morphing to the detected face, and synthesize the face and the warped image. The result shows that eye gazing is corrected and correctly preserved and the image was synthesized seamlessly.

  • In this paper, we present a facial expression recognition-synthesis system that recognizes 7 basic emotion information automatically and renders face with non-photorelistic style in PDA For the recognition of the facial expressions, first we need to detect the face area within the image acquired from the camera. Then, a normalization procedure is applied to it for geometrical and illumination corrections. To classify a facial expression, we have found that when Gabor wavelets is combined with enhanced Fisher model the best result comes out. In our case, the out put is the 7 emotional weighting. Such weighting information transmitted to the PDA via a mobile network, is used for non-photorealistic facial expression animation. To render a 3-D avatar which has unique facial character, we adopted the cartoon-like shading method. We found that facial expression animation using emotional curves is more effective in expressing the timing of an expression comparing to the linear interpolation method.

  • In this paper, we suggest the method of 3D facial synthesis using the motion of 2D facial images. We use the optical flow-based method for estimation of motion. We extract parameterized motion vectors using optical flow between two adjacent image sequences in order to estimate the facial features and the facial motion in 2D image sequences. Then, we combine parameters of the parameterized motion vectors and estimate facial motion information. We use the parameterized vector model according to the facial features. Our motion vector models are eye area, lip-eyebrow area, and face area. Combining 2D facial motion information with 3D facial model action unit, we synthesize the 3D facial model.
