A pilot scale non-woven fabric filter separation activated sludge system was investigated for practical application on domestic wastewater reclamation and reuse. The system was operated in A/O (Anaerobic/Oxic) process with submerged filter module in the aerobic compartment. In the test of two types of filter materials ($70g/m^2$ and $35g/m^2$), the initial flux (0.42m/d) could be maintained for about three months by regular air backwashing of $70g/m^2$ filter at 0.3m water head. The removal efficiency of organic matter by the system was BOD 93.3%, CODcr 96.3%, SS 96.7%. The effluent quality was 7.8mg/L, 12mg/L and 5mg/L for BOD, CODcr and SS, respectively. The water quality was enough to meet a standard for domestic reuse without human contact. T-N removal efficiency was 49.9% at internal recycle rate 2Q and C/N ratio 3.3. The removal efficiency of T-P was 50% with average effluent concentration, 2.6mg/L.
A combination of the submerged membrane activated-sludge bioreactor(SMABR) equipped with non-woven fabric filter and oyster-zeolite (OZ) packed-bed adsorption column was studied to evaluate the advanced tertiary treatment of nitrogen and phosphorous. The non-woven filter module was submerged in the MBR and aeration was operated intermittently for an optimal wastewater treatment performance. Artificial wastewater with $COD_{Cr}$ of 220 mg/L, total nitrogen (T-N) of 45 mg/L, and total phosphorous (T-P) of 6 mg/L was used in this study. MLSS was maintained about $4,000\;{\sim}\;5,000\;mg/L$ throughout the experiments. The experiments were performed for 100-day with periodic non-woven filter washing. The results showed that $COD_{Cr}$ could be effectively removed in SMABR alone with over 94% removal efficiency. However, T-N and T-P removal efficiency was slightly lower than expected with SMABR alone. The permeate from SMABR was then passed through the OZ column for tertiary nutrients removal. The final effluent analysis confirmed that nutrients could be additionally removed resulting in over 87% and 46% removal efficiencies for T-N and T-P, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the waste oyster-shell can be effectively reclaimed as an adsorbent in advanced tertiary wastewater treatment processes in combination with SMABR equipped with non-woven fabric filter.
We studied the photocatalytic functionality such as deodorant, antibacterial, fine dust collection efficiency of polyester-based non-woven fabric filter treated with self-actuated photocatalyst. According to UV/visible result, the UV-visible peak of visible-light responsive photocatalyst was found to be red shift at 420 nm sensitive in the visible light region. The deodorizing performance was shown to be reduced more than 80% even without dark conditions. Fine dust particles collection efficiency was shown to be excellent at the size of not only $2.5{\mu}m{\sim}10.0{\mu}m$ but also less than $2.5{\mu}m$. Also antimicrobial and antifungus was shown to be reduced more than 99.9%.
Pre-filter system that was consisted of wasted-tire, non-woven fabrics, and sponge was developed as a primary treatment process prior to rainwater reservation or a pre-treatment process of rainwater reuse system for reclamation. By using this system, SS concentration, TOC, COD, and turbidity could decreased by 86.7%, 62.6%, 69.1% and 66.5%, respectively. From the results of particle size distribution of treated water, the particles over than $30{\mu}m$ of diameter were completely removed by pre-filter system. But 90% of particles less than $20{\mu}m$ of diameter were passed through pre-filter. Optimal depth of wasted-tire and non-woven fabrics were 15cm and 2.4cm, respectively. Pre-filter system was considered as an effective alternative for pre-treatment of rainwater including non-point pollutants and it could be also applied for the treatment of combined sewer overflow (CSO).
The filter has long been used in purification processes for indoor air quality. To determine the deodorization effect of several filter materials in a full-scale air-handling system, the present study has been carried out using a wind tunnel equipped with a heat exchanger and various filter materials, such as commercial fabric, activated carbon(AC) and silver nano-particles attached to activated carbon(Ag-AC). The experiment was conducted using an odor substance with ammonia, acetaldehyde, acetic acid. The results obtained indicate that odor substance is substantially decreased on the moisture condensation on the surface of the heat exchanger. The fabric filter has no effect for removal of odor substances. The deodorization efficiency is found to be approximately 7% in the AC filter, while the deodorization efficiency is increased up to 10% using the Ag-AC filter.

The main object of this study was to investigate experimentally the characteristics of electrostatic cyclone-bag filter with upper tangential inlet in order to overcome the low collection efficiency for the submicron particle and high pressure drop which were main problems of general fabric bag filters. The experiment was carried out for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop of electrostatic cyclone-bag filter comparing to those of fabric bag filter with various experimental parameters such as the inlet velocity(filtration velocity) and applied voltage etc. In the results the upper tangential inlet type showed higher collection efficiency for submicron particles below 2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter than that of center inlet and over 99.9% for overall collection efficiency. Pressure drop reduction ratios were shown as 40-50% for the applied voltage 0kV by centrifugal force and 70-90% for 20k V by the centrifuga and electrostatic force with the tangential inlet velocity (12-21m/s)

Performance of domestic glass fabrics was tested in a Pulse- jet cleaned fabric filter under simulated coal combustion. Pulse Pressure were 2.5, 4.0kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and pulse air nozzle diameter were 4.0, 6.0mm Pressure drop and penetration turned out to be low at small pulse air nozzle diameter and low pulse air pressure. Fractional penetration through the dust cake and fabric at face velocity of 1.7m/min was higher than that at face velocity of 1.0m/min. As a consequense, the performance of domestic glass fabrics was better with face velocity of less than 1.0m/min, pulse air pressure of 2.5 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and pusle air nozzle diameter of 4.0mm.

A series of fabric filters including P-84, Nomex and PTFE were coated with a commercial $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst as an effort to develop a functional fabric filter of simultaneous removal of dust and NOx. The coating methods employed are sol-gel coating method, spray coating method and dip coating method, and the effects of coating method on NOx removal performance of functional fabric filter were investigated. Experimental conditions are as follows: the temperatures of $100-250^{\circ}C$ which are the normal operating temperature range of fabric filters, the space velocity of $5,000hr^{-1}$, the oxygen concentration of 6%, and the $NH_3/NO$ ratio of 1.0. Results showed that the sol-gel coating method gave the best NOx removal performance mainly due to its ability in controlling the amount of catalyst and uniform coating.

Health effects associated with metal working fluid (MWF) exposures include dermatitis, respiratory disease, hypersensitive pneumonitis, and asthma. Frequently, occupational exposures to MWFs are controlled by ventilating an enclosure with an air cleaning unit that includes a fan preceded by various kinds of filtration. There are several kinds of air cleaning units used in machining centers. But the associated troubles have hindered from efficiently using these devices. The main problem is the relatively short period of filter replacement. The reason is that the air cleaning units usually do not have the de-oiling systems, thus leading the earlier clogging of filters and reducing the flow rate of hood. Thus, the first stage of study was conducted to overcome this problem by developing the new oil mist collector equipped with the easy de-oiling system. The principle of de-oiling is that the centrifugal force generated by spinning the drum covered by filter fabric separates oils from the filter fabric. It would be very similar to the spin-dry laundry. By adopting this de-oiling technique, the problems associated with the conventional oil mist collectors could be solved. Several tests/analyses were performed to make the lab-scale oil mist collector. The collection efficiencies and the de-oiling efficiencies of commercially available filter fabrics were tested. Subsequently, the endurance test were conducted by observing SEM photos of filter fabrics and measuring tensile strength/expansion coefficient after spinning the filter drum for 20 minutes at the different rotation speeds. By doing these experiments, the most appropriate filter fabric and rotation speed/duration were selected. Finally, the new oil mist collector was designed. In the near future, this device must be tested in the real machining center.
Ethanol fermentation by Scccharomyces cervisiae was carried out in the cell recycle filter system with a cheap fabric filter having a pore size of 10${\mu}$m. Maximum biomass concentrations up to 85g/1 were obtained, but in practice operational concentrations were between 50 and 80g/1. Ethanol productivity was 42g/1-hr, with an ethanol concentration of 66g/1 and an ethanol yield of over 86%. Continuous operation was possible by applying periodic backflushing. The ethanol fermentation could be carried out without difficulty at a dilution rate up to 0.8h-1 In order to obtain a high cell concentration and ethanol productivity, development of filter module with the larger filtration area is required.
