  • When polymeric materials are exposed to fire condition, a lot of heat and toxic gases evolved and cause damage to property and human being. Especially toxic gases are major hazard to life safety. This study FTIR(Fourier Transform Infrared) spectrometer analysis was performaed to etermine the gas analysis and the concentration of gases evolved from PVC, FRP, SMC and Ureathane foam using ASTM E 1678 fire model. And FED toxicity index calculated from FTIR data also presented. By the comparison of animal test adopted in KS F 2271 and FTIR gas analysis method, FTIR gas analysis method can replace current animal toxicity test and produce precise and quantitative combustion gas data.

  • The diluted PMMA treated $SiO_2$ films as an passivation materials for semiconductor devices was researched by using the FTIR spectra. The diluted PMMA solution with various ratios changed the surface of $SiO_2$ film as the hydrophilic, hydrophobic or hybrid type properties. The sample 7 with little carbon content showed dramatically the chemical variation by the FTIR spectra analysis. Beacuse the little carbon with electrons decreased the polarity and surface energy on the $SiO_2$ film, and then became a stable bonding structure and decreased the leakage current. The FTIR spectra can define the detail variation due to the chemical reaction on the organic thin film, and help to research the characteristic of the organic materials.

  • The adhesives joining Buddhist scripture scrolls from medieval Korea(Goryeo Dynasty, A.D. 918~1392) are different from wheat starch adhesive. The composition of the adhesive was analyzed using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared(ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. In the adhesive used to join Buddhist scripture scrolls, peaks attributed to amide I and amide II of the protein and carbohydrate were detected in the ATR-FTIR spectra, and no carbonyl peak($1745cm^{-1}$) for oil was detected in the 2nd derivative ATR-FTIR spectra. The ATR-FTIR spectra almost coincided with those of defatted soybean powder adhesive. Hence, the adhesives joining Buddhist scripture scrolls were inferred to be soybean adhesive prepared from a defatted soybean cake.

  • The non-isothermal crystallization behavior of ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) copolymer was investigated by DSC and imaging FTIR analysis. Modified non-isothermal Avrami analysis was applied to interpret the crystallization behavior of ETFE. It was found that the less linearity in ln[-ln(1-X(t))] vs. ln(t) plot was obtained in thermal analysis comparison with imaging FTIR due to relatively small crystallization enthalpy change in ETFE. It means that imaging FTIR measured by overall IR absorption intensity change due to the crystallization was found to be effective to understand the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of ETFE. In addition, the optical transmittance of ETFE was studied. The crystallite developed by slow cooling caused the light scattering and resulted in the increase of haze and the lowering of transmittance up to 8%. From our results, it was confirmed that cooling rate is an important processing parameter for maintaining optical transmittance of ETFE as a replacement material for glass.

  • The incompletion of TIR (Total Internal Reflection) in FTIR (Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) touch screen has been investigated as follows. Assuming a 3 layer thin film of medium1 ($n_1$)-medium2 ($n_2$)-medium3 ($n_3$) with refraction indices of $n_1=n_3{\neq}n_2$, it was theoretically proven that FTIR or OT (ordinary transmission) phenomena might happen through medium2 from medium1 to medium3 relying on relative difference in $n_1(=n_3)$ and $n_2$, and that the formulae for FTIR and OT could be transformed into each other depending on the number state (imaginary or real) of the light wave phase. In parallel to the theoretical analysis, the incompletion of TIR in acrylate due to external contacts was also elucidated from the experimental and phenomenological viewpoints. On the basis of this considerate work, we explained how to improve the touching performance for better FTIR touch screen.

  • This study compared FTIR with XRD method for the analysis of quartz by % recovery, coefficient of variation (CV) and influence of the interference. the results were as the following. 1. In FTIR method, the coefficient of determination ($r^2$) was 0.9998 in a calibration curve of $695\;cm^{-1}$, and the limit of detection was $4.9{\mu}g/sample$. 2. The highest recovery was $799\;cm^{-1}$ (98.2%). 3. The CVpooled of the FTIR method was approximately 10% in three wave numbers. 4. The analysis of qualitative and quantitative for quartz is difficult with mixed cristobalite and iron oxide. 5. In XRD method with rotating sample holder and LynxEye detector, the coefficient of determination was 0.9996 in a calibration curve, and the limit of detection was $5.9{\mu}g/sample$. 6. The recovery and CV pooled were 104.3%, and 11 %, respectively. 7. In muffle furnace ashing, the quartz weight decreased to 34% when the maximum weight of the iron oxide was more than eight times. In conclusion, the accuracy (% recovery) and precision (CV) of FTIR and XRD method for analyzing $\alpha$-quartz were similar. FTIR method was a disadvantage for sample matrix because it indicates possibility of interference. However, XRD method distinguished specific crystalline forms of silica, and the majority of silicate minerals. In addition, XRD method recommend filter dissolution to pretreatment method.

  • Structural changes of cellulosic fibres during the papermaking process were studied by analysis of FTIR spectra collected by the transmission method. The spectra were obtained from a carefully prepared handsheet, using a special infra-red (IR) cell suitable for evacuating the sample. The deconvolution technique was also applied for sharpening the FTIR spectra in the frequency range of the OH and CH stretching bands, which gave detailed information on the structural changes of cellulose. The intensity of some bands was decreased by predrying the sample as a result of the removal of adsorbed moisture. An increase in intensity of some bands in the frequency range of 3700 to $3200cm^{-1}$ was shown at a higher beating level. This increase in intensity was caused by changes in the crystal domain of cellulose resulting from the exposure of the crystalline area on the fibre surface.

  • FTIR(Fourier Transform Infrared) spectrometry is a useful method to obtain infrared spectra of materials in gas phase by registering the interferogram of a target material using an interferometer, and then performing a Fourier transform on the interferogram to obtain the spectrum. In this paper, sampling noise effect on signal processing of the rapid scan interferometer was studied with relation to sampling the interferogram points at the improper location and empirically verified.
