  • We have studied a method for the preparation of $ACF/TiO_2$ composites involving the penetrationof titanium n-butoxide (TNB) solution into activated carbon fiber. It was focused on the characterization of $TiO_2$ formed in prorous carbon was which increased with surface functional groups by hydrochloric acid treatment. The conversion of TNB to $TiO_2$ for the acid treatment effect must be important for the preparationof $ACF/TiO_2$ composites. From the characterization of surface properties, both the BET surface area and the total pore volume decreased as the distribution of $TiO_2$ on the activated carbon fiber surfaces after acid treatments. The changes in XRD pattern showed the typical anatase type on $ACF/TiO_2$ composite for the sample named FT, FT1 and FT2 treated with 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 M, respectively. However, XRD patern of FT3 treated with 0.5M showed mixed amatase-rutile structure. According to the results of SEM micrographs, the titanium complexe particles were irregularly distributed around carbon. And some large clusters were found when an amount of acid treatment increased. The EDX results of $ACF/TiO_2$ composites showed the presence of C, O and P with strong Ti peaks. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of the $ACF/TiO_2$ composites between relative concentration($c/c_o$) of MB (methylene blue) and UV irradiation time could be attributed to the both effects between photocatalysis of the formation of titania complexes and adsorptivity of the activated carbon fiber.

  • Alterations in thyroid function test results are frequently seen in patients with nonthyroidal illness & correlate with the severity of the illness & prognosis. We studied thyroid hormone changes in 14 patients received cardiopulmonary bypass[CPB]. All patients were biochemical euthyroidism preoperatively. TSH[Thyroid Stimulating Hormone] level reached its nadir[0.46 $\pm$ 0.11 ulU/ml, P<0.0005] at 12 hours after the start of CPB & showed elevating pattern to the preoperative level thereafter. FT4[Free Thyroxine] reached to its nadir[10.16$\pm$ 1.17 pmol/L, P<0.01] at POD[Post Operative Day] #4 & reached to the preoperative level at POD #7. Mean serum TSH & FT4 concentration were within normal limits[P>0.25] during CPB & thereafter. TT3[Total Triiodothyronine] reached to its nadir[38.6 $\pm$ 8.4 ng/dl, P<0.001] at 30 minutes after the start of CPB & remained low[P<0.05] throughout the study period. The patients whose recovery was uneventful[Group I] had higher serum TSH, TT3 levels[P<0.05] than who had complications or died[Group II]. Group I showed the elevating pattern of TSH, TT3 at POD #4, but Group II failed to show such elevating pattern. In Group I, FT4 was within normal limits[P>0.5] throughout the study period, and also within normal limits[P>0.1] in Group II.

  • Purpose: We aimed to determine the differences in the levels of serum thyroid hormone (free T4 [FT4]) and thyroid stimulating hormone [TSH]) as biomarkers for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection status, with respect to age and sex. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed serum samples from 200 patients who underwent HBV testing from August 2022 to September 2022. Serum samples were collected from patients suspected of having HBV infection who visited this hospital. Thyroid hormone levels were measured, and patients were grouped according to age and sex. Results: Differences in TSH and FT4 levels in the serum of patients in the HBV-positive and -negative groups were not significant. Among the HBV-positive patients in the younger age group (<60 years), TSH and FT4 levels were 1.78 ± 0.09 µIU/mL (normal: 0.4-5.0 µIU/mL) and 1.24 ± 0.02 ng/mL (normal: 0.8-1.9 ng/mL), respectively, whereas among the HBV-positive patients in the older age group (≥60 years), TSH and FT4 levels were 2.22 ± 0.17 µIU/mL and 1.24 ± 0.07 ng/mL, respectively. Conclusions: The presence of HBV did not markedly affect serum thyroid hormone levels. Our findings shed light on the conflicting evidence on the association between thyroid hormone levels and HBV infection. We, Hyeokjun Yun and Bo Kyeung Jung are co-first authors which made substantial contribution equally to the conception and designed of this work. • To determine whether FT-IR spectral analysis based on multivariate analysis for whole cell extracts can be used to discriminate papaya at metabolic level. FT-IR spectral data from leaves were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). FT-IR spectra confirmed typical spectral differences between the frequency regions of 1,700-1,500, 1,500-1,300 and 1,100-950 cm-1, respectively. These spectral regions were reflecting the quantitative and qualitative variations of amide I, II from amino acids and proteins (1,700-1,500 cm-1), phosphodiester groups from nucleic acid and phospholipid (1,500-1,300 cm-1) and carbohydrate compounds (1,100-950 cm-1). The result of PCA analysis showed that papaya leaves could be separated into clusters depending on different growth temperature. In this case, showed discrimination confirmed according to metabolite content of growth condition from papaya. And PLS-DA analysis also showed more clear discrimination pattern than PCA result. Furthermore, these metabolic discrimination systems could be applied for rapid selection and classification of useful papaya cultivars.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalent characteristics of fowl typhoid (FT) of chicken caused by Salmonella gallinarum in Korea. The occurrence of FT for 7 years from 1995 to 2001 in Korea was analyzed. The incidence of FT outbreaks was 10.3% of the total outbreaks of avian infectious disease cases diagnosed at National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) from 1995 to 2001. When the outbreaks of H cases was analyzed in relation to the chicken breeds, the incidence of FT in commercial layers, commercial broilers, egg-type breeders, and meat-type breeders was 71.4%, 25.0%, 0.2% and 3.4%, respectively. Especially, the incidence in layers fell 25.8~27.6% in 2000 and 2001 from 1999, on the other hand, the amount of FT vaccines assayed at NVRQS for use in layers only jumped to 57,881.5$\times$1,000 dose in 2001, an increase of 4 times from the previous year. In the analysis of the seasonal distribution, it was found the incidence was high in summer (38.5%) and fall (33.9%). Also, the age comparison analysis showed that the rate of FT outbreaks in layers was highest (45.6%) between 10 to 30 weeks. However, in broilers, the highest percentage (61.6%) was shown at the age of below 2 weeks.

  • In the present study, to clarify a possible relevance of blind-side hypermelanosis to chronic stress in cultured flounders, P. olivaceus, a serial experiment was tried with comparison of biochemical stress factors between wild type and hypermelanic type in cultured olive flounders. The mean size of experimental animal was total length 21.5±0.42 cm and body weight 87.5±6.1 g. The initial malpigmented area rate on the blind side skin was 0.63±0.12% and 16.7±4.7%, respectively, in the wild type and the hypermelanic type. The stress factors surveyed in the experiment were glucose (GLU), total protein (TP), cortisol, free type-thyroid hormones (FT3 and FT4) in plasma, and also moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and crude ash in body muscle. As a result, GLU and TP were higher in hypermelanic type than in wild type. Plasma cortisol was also higher in hypermelanic type than in wild type. In FT3 and FT4, any difference between two groups was not observed. In body nutrient factors, the moisture and the crude ash in body composition were not different between two groups, but the crude protein was low and the crude lipid was high in the hypermelanic type. Therefore, it is concluded that the blind-side hypermelanosis of cultured flounders could be related with a chronic stress.

  • A study during second trimester of pregnancy was conducted among 100 women from a population with mild to moderate deficient iodine intake (median 7 ${\mu}g$/L)to monitor the changes in serum free thyroxin ($FT_4$), triiodothyionine ($T_3$) and thyrtropin (TSH). Thyroid related hormones were assessed using radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunoradiometricassay (IRMA). As compared with non pregnant women, mean $FT_4$ levels decreased, $T_3$ levels increased and TSH levels were slightly depressed in pregnant women. Mean $FT_4$ concentration reached its highest level in the $4^{th}$ month and linearly decreased until the $6^{th}$ month. Mean $T_3$ level remained almost constant during $2^{nd}$ trimester of pregnancy. Mean TSH level remained unaltered during the $4^{th}$ and $5^{th}$ months and was slightly lower than that for the control group. However, these differences were statistically insignificant At the end of the second trimester, hypothyroxinemia and $T_3$ levels greater than the upper limit of the laboratory reference range were found in $34\%$ and $38\%$ of women, respectively. These changes in thyroid hormones reflect typical adaptations of the thyroid gland during pregnancy to the limited availability of iodine.
