One well-known reason for using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites is to improve concrete strength and strain capacity via external confinement. Hence, various studies have been undertaken to offer a good illustration of the response of FRP-wrapped concrete for practical design intents. However, in such studies, the strength and strain of the confined concrete were predicted using regression analysis based on a limited number of test data. This study presents an approach based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to develop models to predict the strength and strain at maximum stress enhancement of circular concrete cross-sections confined with different FRP types (Carbone, Glass, Aramid). To achieve this goal, a large test database comprising 493 axial compression experiments on FRP-confined concrete samples was compiled based on an extensive review of the published literature and used to validate the predicted artificial intelligence techniques. The ANN approach is currently thought to be the preferred learning technique because of its strong prediction effectiveness, interpretability, adaptability, and generalization. The accuracy of the developed ANN model for predicting the behavior of FRP-confined concrete is commensurate with the experimental database compiled from published literature. Statistical measures values, which indicate a better fit, were observed in all of the ANN models. Therefore, compared to existing models, it should be highlighted that the newly developed models based on FRP type are remarkably accurate.

FRP Hybrid Bar, composed of an embedded steel and the coated composites with epoxy and glass fiber, is an effective construction material with tension-hardening performance and lightweight. The epoxy exposed to UV(Ultra Violet Rays) and FT(Freezing and Thawing) action easily shows a surface deterioration, which can cause degradation of bonding strength between inside-steel and outside-concrete. In the present work, surface inspection for 3 different samples of normal steel, FRP Hybrid Bar before UV, and FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test was performed, then concrete samples with 3 reinforcement types were prepared for accelerated FT test. Through visual inspection on 3 typed reinforcement, no significant deterioration like chalking was evaluated. The results from FT test to 120 and 180 cycles showed FRP Hybrid Bar exposed to UV test has higher bonding strength than normal steel by 106.3% due to enlarged bond area by silica coating. The 3 cases showed a similar bond strength tendency with increasing FT cycles, however a relatively big deviations of bond strength were evaluated in FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test due to loss of silica coating.

DFRCC (ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites), which are a significantly improved ductile material compared to conventional concrete, were evaluated as a new construction material with a high potential applications to concrete structures for a range of purposes. In this study, experiments on the failure behavior of composite beams with a DFRCC and FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) plank with a rib used as permanent formwork and tensile reinforcement were carried out. A normal concrete and a fiber reinforced concrete with PVA series of RF4000 and the PP series of PP-macro were used for comparison, and each RF4000+RSC15 and PP-macro+RSC15 was tested by producing composite beams. The experimental results of the FRP plank without a sand coating showed that sliding failure mode between the FRP plank and concrete started from a flexural crack at the beam center; therefore it is necessary for the FRP plank to be coated with sand and the effect of the fiber to failure mode did not appear to be huge. The experiment of the FRP plank with a sand coating showed that both 1200mm and 2000mm allowed sufficient bonding between the concrete and FRP plank. The maximum load of the fiber reinforced concrete was higher than that of normal concrete and the case which a series of PP fiber was mixed showed the highest value. The crack latency caused by the fibers led to composite action with a FRP rib.
In order to analyse the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to the wavelength of ultraviolet rays and evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface resistivity, surface potential decay, and ESCA spectrum respectively. Finally, We can conclude that the degradation phenomena on the surface of epoxy composites are dominated by the induction of ester and carboxyl groups.
The current study targets to estimate the contribution of the end-anchored FRP composites in resisting shear force using a soft computing tool i.e., adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). A total of 107 sets of data accumulated from literature was utilized for the development and evaluation of the current ANFIS model. A comparative analysis between the ANFIS predictions and the acquired experimental results has shown that the ANFIS predictions are in very good agreement with that of experimental ones. Additionally, the accuracy of the current ANFIS model has been weighed up against the estimates of nine widely adopted design guidelines. Based on various statistical parameters, it has been deduced that the effectiveness of the current ANFIS model is better than the considered design guidelines. Besides this, a parametric study was carried out to explore the combined effect of different parameters as well as the impact of individual parameters.

In order to analyze the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to high temperature. Then, the degradation process was evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface potential, surface resistivity, and XPS. The experimental results showed that the amount of weight loss, contact angle, surface potential and surface resistivity increased up to 200 $^{\circ}C$ as a function of temperature. These phenomena show the existence of hydrophobic surface. With the change to the hydrophobic surface and the electrical potential and resistivity on FRP surface increased. In XPS to analyze surface chemical structures, the increased hydrophobicity in thermal increase of unsaturated double bond in carbon chains. Aslo, thermal treatment caused the discoloration on the point of treated surface. These phenomena were attributed to the generations of ether group.
The effect of the porosity and its distribution shape on the normal and shear interfacial stresses of the FGM beam strengthened with FRP plate subjected to a uniformly distributed load are investigated analytically in the present paper. Basically, the governing equations of FGM beams with porosity strengthened with composite plates are identical to the ones without porosity. Nonetheless, when the effect of the porosity and its distribution shape are taken into account, the rule of mixture was reformulated to assess the material characteristics with the porosity phases and its distribution shape. This work discusses the influence of the gradient index, the porosity and its distribution shape on the interfacial stresses.

In the present paper, glass fibers are substituted partially with monofilament fishnet and polyester matrix for making the composites. The composite specimens were prepared in accordance with ASTM for analyzing the flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties. Furthermore, machinability revealed the interaction of glass fiber and partial substituted monofilament fishnet fiber with the matrix. Fiber pullouts on the fractured specimen during the physical testing of the composites are also investigated by COSLAB microscope. The results reveal that the fishnet based composites have appreciably higher flexural properties. Furthermore, the glass fiber, woven roving and fishnet composite has more storage modulus and significant mechanical damping. The composite specimens were fabricated by hand lay-up method. Hence, these composites are the possible applications to develop the value added products. The results of this study are presented.
This paper presents some research topics for advanced composites which have been conducted in Ben laboratory, College of industrial Technology, Nihon University. The topics are applications of shape memory alloy(SMA) to composite structures, dynamic responses of CFRP and GFRP structures, fabrication of new type of GFRP, fatigue and weatherability strength of CFRP and new concept of joint for FRP structures, respectively.
Interfacial effect in polymetric composites have been studied extensively. This report deals mainly with the effects of interfacial space charge and interface structure. A model for the dynamic process of interfacial space charge accumulation is proposed. The new model might interpret some interface phenomena which is difficult to be explained in terms of traditional Maxwell-Wagner theory. An interface structure is also presented, by which the importance of surface treatment of glass Fiber for improving the properties of FRP could be well understood.
