A study on the dynamic response of single-storey steel frames equipped with a rotational friction damper is presented. Extensive testing was carried out for assessing the friction pad material, damper unit performance and foaled model frame response to lateral harmonics excitation. Numerical simulations based on non-linear time history analysis were used to evaluate the seismic behaviour of steel frames with rotational frictional damper. It Is demonstrated that using discrete friction dampers of proper parameters to link steel frame can reduce dynamic response significantly.
Friction properties of two different types of automotive friction materials were studied. They were nonasbestos organic and semi-metallic friction materials. The two friction materials were tested using an inertia brake dynamometer to investigate friction stability, rooster tailing phenomena, temperature change of riction couples during drags and stops. Results showed that the level of the friction force is strong function of time, temperature, and speed regardless of the type of friction materials. The change of triction coefficient during braking (rooster tailing) was pronounced when the applied pressure was increased in the case of semi-metallic friction materials. This phenomena appears strongly dependent on the applied pressure, initial brake temperature and ingredients in the friction material.
This paper proposes a tension control to compensate friction loss using on-line friction torque observer for a continuous strip processing line. Friction loss of roller results in significant deviation of strip tension, accordingly it has an influence on the operation of other adjacent rolls. To avoid tension variation of the strip, a friction torque observer is designed in adjacent roll, which operates in speed control mode. The observed torque is added to the torque limit reference of the pay-off reel for on-line compensation of both friction loss and acceleration/deceleration torque at the same time. The simulation and experimental results show improvement of tension control performance by the proposed friction compensation method.
This study aimed not only to develop the optimization of dissimilar friction welding of pinion gear of a motor vehicle steels of SCM415 and SMn443, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish an in-process real-time quality(such as strength and toughness) evaluation during friction welding of the pinion gear by the AE technique.
This study examined the surface modification characteristics of NBR using sealing in automobile. Surfaces of NBR were modified by RF power Ar plasma treatment. In experiment, pressure, flux, temperature were fixed and RF bias voltage. Treatment time was changed. In friction test, we used PTFE grease. After modification, surfaces of NBR showed many grooves, hydrophilic functional groups, and lipophilic functional groups. As increasing treating voltage and time, the amount of them was increased. And wetting angle and friction coefficient was decreased with increasing treating voltage and time. However, the pattern of changing friction coefficient was not fixed.
Magnesium alloy has been known as lightweight material in automobile and electronic industry with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction welding is useful to join different kinds of metals and nonferrous metals they are difficult to be joined by such as gas welding, resistance welding and electronic beam welding. In this study, friction welding was performed to investigate optimization process of Mg alloy with a 20mm diameter solid bar. For that, the orthogonal array $(L_{9}(3^{4}))$ was used that contained four factors and each factor had three levels. Control factors were heating pressure, heating time, upsetting pressure and upsetting time. Also tensile tests were carried out to measure mechanical properties for welded conditions. The levels of heating pressure and upsetting pressure used were 15, 25, 35MPa, and 30, 50, 70MPa, respectively. In addition those of heating time and upsetting time were 0.5, 1, 1.5 sec and 3, 4, 5 sec., respectively, rotating speed of 2000rpm. From the experimental results, optimization condition was estimated as follows; heating pressure=35MPa, upsetting pressure=70MPa, heating time=1.5sec, upsetting time=3sec.
This work introduces a modal testing and analysis results of the mock-up for a layered stone pagoda. The pagoda has been horizontally excited by an impact hammer. As to the measured acceleration time responses, the first five lower mode shapes and natural frequency are extracted by the TDD technique. It is observed that the time delay of a shear wave occurs through friction surfaces. Such phenomena cannot be described by using the traditional analytical models such as a continuum cantilever beam model or a discrete shear building model. However, the time delay typically affects only the phases of the pagoda system. The frequencies of the pagoda system are not affected by such time delay. It is found in the first time that the layered stone pagoda system has a set of closely placed modes in near of natural frequency. It is believed that such modes are due to the friction characteristics in friction surfaces. Based on the stick-slip friction model, it seems that the one of the closely placed mode can be a self-excited one.
This paper deals with determining the proper friction welding condition and analyzing various mechanical properties of friction welded joints of the bladepart heat resisting steel(STD11) for cold die punch to the shank part alloy steel(SCM440). And the in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission during friction welding of STD11 to SCM440 steels with higher confidence and reliability has been much required even though it might be the first trial approach for developing it. Also, the high temperature properties of STD11-SCM440 weld were considered in this paper.
Friction welding of GCD45 spheroidal graphite cast iron and 2024 aluminum alloy has been studied, especially in terms of the joint faces and strength of friction welding. For appropriate results of the friction welding of GCD45 graphite cast iron and 2024 aluminum alloy, an insert of A1050 pure aluminum metal was used. The joint strength of the A1050 pure aluminum insert approached the maximum strength of 165.7Mpa, compared to 128MPa for the joint between GCD45 graphite cast iron and A1050 pure aluminum without the insert metal. Maximum strength, 165.7Mpa, was possible for the following optimum conditions: 20MPa for the friction pressure, P1, 60MPa for the upsetting pressure, P2, 1 second for the friction time, t1, 3000rpm for the rotation, N, and 0.3 seconds for the brake time, tB.
