Effects of Cognitive Focus and Affective Focus on Attitude and Buying Intention in DMB Cellular Phone Purchasing (인지초점과 감정초점이 DMB 휴대폰에 대한 태도와 구매의도에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study investigated the effects of focus on consumers' attitudes and buying intentions. For these purposes, researcher compare the attitudes and buying intentions by focus groups after presenting cognitive and affective product informations about a cellular-phone. The results of present experiment were as follow: First, cognitive focus led to highest cognitive attitude and affective focus also led to highest affective attitude. Second, It was highest buying intention in an affective focus and lowest in a non-focus. Third, a cognitive focus resulted in more cognitive words being recalled, by comparison with an affective focus, whereas an affective focus resulted in more affective words being recalled, by comparison with a cognitive focus. But they were not significant. These results show that cognitive and affective focuses lead to different attitudes that differ in their basis. An attitude formed in an affective focus results in a stronger buying intention than an attitude formed in an cognitive focus. The present findings also suggest that the different focus conditions result in different attitudes and buying intentions being formed, and to be diluting but to more enduring effects.

  • Purpose - In this study, the author investigates which shopping motivations affect regulatory focus differently. This study also determines the effect of shopping motivation on regulatory focus when consumers use different shopping channels. Additionally, the author tries to investigate how information quality affects regulatory focus. Similarly, this study also examines the effect of the shopping channel on the relationship between information quality and regulatory focus. Research design, data, and methodology - With 635 surveyed questionnaires, this study was conducted by SPSS and AMOS 22.0 version. SEM was used to verity hypotheses and model. Results - According to this research, hedonic shopping motivation affects promotion focus positively and prevention focus negatively. Furthermore, when consumers use a mobile channel rather than an online one, hedonic shopping motivation affects prevention focus more negatively. However, depending on the shopping channel, there are no significant differences in the case of the relationship between hedonic motivation and promotion focus. The author also examines how information quality affects regulatory focus. In particular, when consumers use a mobile channel rather than an online one, information quality affects promotion and prevention focus more positively. Conclusions - Through this study, the author suggests that shopping motivation and information quality could influence consumers' regulatory focus, shopping attitude, and intention.

Tonal Implementation of English Topic and Focus (영어 화제와 초점의 억양 실현 양상)

  • This paper investigates the tonal patterns of English information structure composed of topic and focus. It has been argued in previous theories that there is a significant relationship between English topic-focus structure and intonation. The English topic is marked with L+H* pitch accent and focus is marked with H* pitch accent. These theories, however, are oversimplified ones since they do not consider the contextual differences of topic and focus. To examine more concrete tonal patterns of English topic and focus, we classified topic into two subcategories of reminding topic and old-information topic. Focus was categorized into three: information focus, contrastive focus, and reference focus. The overall results show that native English speakers are inclined to use both the L+H* and H* pitch accent for the topic and focus of an utterance. We also observe a tendency to deaccentuate the topics given as old information and to mark the topics given as noun phrase with H* pitch accent. As for the intonation of focus, H* pitch accent is the most frequent type of accent, but L+H* also shows a high percentage of implementation especially in the context of correction or contrast.

Ethical Behavior in the Context of Green Credit Card Services: The Role of Individuals' Regulatory Focus

  • Green credit card is the card service to revitalize the eco-friendly life of the people, offering a variety of benefits to card users for supporting environment. The present research aims to examine the effect of individuals' regulatory focus (promotion focus vs. prevention focus) on their ethical behavior in the context of green credit/debit card services. This research examines whether green credit/debit card users behave ethically according to their regulatory focus. The results indicate that green credit/debit card users with a prevention focus are more likely to behave ethically compared to those with a promotion focus. The findings imply that regulatory focus may be an effective marketing and segmentation tool in facilitating individuals' ethical behavior.

  • This paper investigates previous theories on English focus realization and attempts to find out the overall acoustic characteristics of English focus. It has been argued in previous studies that English focus can be defined as a new information that is not recoverable from the context (Halliday 1967), a complementary element of presupposition (Jackendoff 1972), and what is predicated about the topic in a sentence (Sgall 1973, Gundel 1974). The phonetic realization of English focus in an utterance has been said to be either L+H*/H*, or falling accent. Yet it is a more or less simplified pattern not based on real data obtained from native speakers of English, and it does not consider the various pragmatic and contextual situations. In our experiments we found that native speakers uttered English focus sentences in different ways according to the different focus structure. Another notable result is that Korean speakers, when provided with the same experimental material, are neither able to distinguish different focus types nor deaccent the elements that are not focused in an utterance.

Focus, Contrastive Topic and Theories of Focus

  • This paper categorizes currently available theories of focus into two major types a 'discourse structure approach'(DSA) and a 'sentence structure approach'(SSA) The former DSA is intended to refer to a type of approach that analyzes focus only in terms of the discourse structure in which a focused sentence occurs. The alternative semantics approach which is the most widely available theory of focus belongs to this The latter SSA is meant to refer to a type of theory that analyzes focus in terms of sentence-internal structure, This study supports the SSA be revealing some empirical problems of the DSA that arise is analyzing two different kinds of focus, the A-accented focus and the B-accented focus (contrastive topic), and provides a brief sketch of a comprehensive analysis of focus and contrastive topic.

3D Surface Reconstruction by Combining Focus Measures through Genetic Algorithm (유전 알고리즘 기반의 초점 측도 조합을 이용한 3차원 표면 재구성 기법)

  • For the reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) shape of microscopic objects through shape from focus (SFF) methods, usually a single focus measure operator is employed. However, it is difficult to compute accurate depth map using a single focus measure due to different textures, light conditions and arbitrary object surfaces. Moreover, real images with diverse types of illuminations and contrasts lead to the erroneous depth map estimation through a single focus measure. In order to get better focus measurements and depth map, we have combined focus measure operators by using genetic algorithm. The resultant focus measure is obtained by weighted sum of the output of various focus measure operators. Optimal weights are obtained using genetic algorithm. Finally, depth map is obtained from the refined focus volume. The performance of the developed method is then evaluated by using both the synthetic and real world image sequences. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective in computing accurate depth maps as compared to the existing SFF methods.

Enhancing Focus Measurements in Shape From Focus Through 3D Weighted Least Square (3차원 가중최소제곱을 이용한 SFF에서의 초점 측도 개선)

  • In shape from focus (SFF) methods, the quality of image focus volume plays a vital role in the quality of 3D shape reconstruction. Traditionally, a linear 2D filter is applied to each slice of the image focus volume to rectify the noisy focus measurements. However, this approach is problematic because it also modifies the accurate focus measurements that should ideally remain intact. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to enhance the focus volume adaptively by applying 3-dimensional weighted least squares (3D-WLS) based regularization. We estimate regularization weights from the guidance volume extracted from the image sequences. To solve 3D-WLS optimization problem efficiently, we apply a technique to solve a series of 1D linear sub-problems. Experiments conducted on synthetic and real image sequences demonstrate that the proposed method effectively enhances the image focus volume, ultimately improving the quality of reconstructed shape.

Post-focus compression is not automatically transferred from Korean to L2 English

  • Korean and English are both known to show on-focus pitch range expansion and post-focus pitch range compression (PFC). But it is not clear if this prosodic similarity would make it easy for Korean speakers to learn English focus prosody. In the present study, we conducted a production experiment using phone number strings to examine whether Korean learners of English produce a native-like focus prosody. Korean learners of English were classified into three groups (advanced, intermediate and low) according to their English proficiency and were compared to native speakers. Results show that intermediate and low groups of speakers did not increase duration, intensity, and pitch in the focus positions, nor did they compress those cues in the post-focus positions. Advanced speakers noticeably increased the acoustic cues in the focus positions to a similar extent as native speakers. However, their performance in post-focus positions was quite far from that of native speakers in terms of pitch and excursion size. These results thus demonstrate a lack of positive transfer of focus prosody from Korean to English in L2 learning, and learners may have to relearn it from scratch, which is consistent with a previous finding. More importantly, the results provide further support for the view proposed in other works that acoustic properties of PFC were not easily transferred from one language to another.

The Relationship between Flight Crew's Regulatory Focus and Adaptive Performance - Organizational Commitment as a Moderator - (조절초점과 적응수행의 관계에서 조직유효성의 영향 - 조직몰입의 조절효과 -)

  • This study examined the effect of regulatory focus on adaptative performance for pilots and co-pilots engaged in domestic civil airlines, and verified the moderating effect of organizational commitment in the process of regulatory focus on adaptative performance. For study, the scale developed by Lockwood Penelope and others validated and developed to measure the regulatory focus was adapted to suit the aviation scene and examined through this. As a result of the study, among the sub-variables of the regulatory focus scale, the promotion focus had a statistically significant and positive effect on the adaptative performance. and derived that the prevention focus had a statistically significant negative effect on the adaptative performance. In order to examine the moderating effect of organizational commitment in the relationship between regulatory focus and adaptative performance, the results of hierarchical regression analysis were conducted after controlling the rank, background, and career. Organizational commitment showed a statistically significant positive moderating effect in the relationship of adaptative performance. In addition, as a result of the verification according to the level of organizational commitment, prevention focus and adaptative performance showed statistically significant negative effects when organizational commitment was high.
