  • Single crystalline films of La doped YIG(yttrium iron garnet) were grown by the liquid phase epitaxy. The lattice constants of films obtained by DCD(double crystalline diffractometer) measurement increased with increasing La contents in films. In particular, lattice constants of films grown wiht Y/La=20 solution were nearly same as those of GGG (gadolinium gallium garnet) substrate. The saturation magnetization measured with VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer) was about 1750Gauss which is the same as that of pure YIG irrespective of La contents in films. FMR(ferromagnetic resonance) linewidth of La doped YIG was smaller than that of pure YIG. Since appropriate La doping decreases the lattice mismatch between film and substrate, the FMR linewidth was Y/La=20 in this experiment.

  • Spinel ferrite thin films Fe3-x MnxO4 (x=0.000, 0.006, 0.0010, 0.015, 0.023) were prepared on the coverglass by ferrite plating technique. To investigate the uniaxial anisotrpy of the samples, the saturation and effective magnetization of the thin films were measured by VSM(vibrating sample magnetometer) and FMR(ferromagnetic resonance) measurements respectively. The spectroscopic splitting g factor were estimated from the ferromagnetic resonance curves. For x=0.000, 0.006, the effective magnetization was measured of temperatures form T=77 K to T=300 K. The results were analyzed in terms of Bloch's law Ms(T) = Ms(0) (1-BT3/2-CT5/2). The Bloch coefficient B, C were determined by fitting. Ms(0) was obtained by extrapolating Meff to 0 K. From this result, the spin wave stiffness constants D was also determined.

  • Exchange bias effect of a various layered thin films were studied by FMR measurment. In plane angular dependence of a resonance field distribution which measured by FMR was analysed as a combined effect of an unidirectional anisotropy and an uniaxial anisotropy. Exchange biased NiFe/IrMn, IrMn/NiFe/IrMn, and NiFe/IrMn/CoFe thin films showed larger unidirectional anisotropy field and uniaxial anisotropy field with compared to that of an unbiased NiFe single thin film. In case of NiFe/Cu/IrMn, the film with thick Cu layer exhibited a similar trend to the unbiased NiFe thin film. NiFe/IrMn/CoFe thin film showed two resonance field distribution due to different ferromagnetic layers. In additon to the resonance field, the line width was also analysed with related to exchange bias effect.

  • We have measured the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) signal in as deposited and $400^{\circ}C$ annealed CoFeB/MgO thin film to investigate the annealing effect on magnetic anisotropies and FMR linewidth (${\Delta}H_{PP}$). The uniaxial anisotropy field ($H_{K1}$) was only observed in the as deposited sample. Whereas, in the $400^{\circ}C$ annealed sample, the biaxial anisotropy field ($H_{K2}$) was additionally observed in accompany with uniaxial anisotropy field ($H_{K1}$). The appearance of biaxial anisotropy fields was originated from the crystalline growth of bcc CoFeB(001) from the MgO(001) interface and by the B diffusion during thermal annealing. Also, the ${\Delta}H_{PP}$ of $400^{\circ}C$ annealed sample was increased compared with that of as deposited sample, which was due to the broad distribution of the magnetization axis by the biaxial anisotropy.

  • Purpose: Fibrinogen and platelets have been reported to play important roles in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. The aim of this research was to investigate the combination of functions of fibrinogen, platelets, and mean platelet volume (MPV) in predicting the survival of patients with gastric cancer (GC). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted with 1,946 patients with GC and 299 patients with benign gastric tumor to analyze their fibrinogen, platelet, and MPV levels, and other clinicopathological characteristics along with their prognoses. Several indicators were evaluated along with fibrinogen, platelets, and MPV and their prognostic abilities were assessed. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were conducted to determine the independent risk factors for overall survival. Results: Increased levels of fibrinogen, platelets, and MPV were observed with the progress of the GC stages. Elevated fibrinogen, platelets, and the combined indicators, including fibrinogen*MPV (FM), platelet*fibrinogen*MPV (PFM), fibrinogen/MPV (FMR), platelet*fibrinogen (PF), platelet*fibrinogen/MPV (PFMR), platelet*MPV (PM), and platelet/MPV (PMR), foreboded poor prognosis. Meanwhile fibrinogen and FMR can be considered as independent risk factors for overall survival in patients with non-metastatic GC. But these indicators can hardly predict survival of patients in stage IV. Conclusions: Elevated fibrinogen, platelets, and MPV levels were in accordance with advanced stages, and fibrinogen, platelet, and MPV, in combination, can be used to predict survival of patients with non-metastatic GC. FMR was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival of patients with GC.

  • Purpose: Fragile X carrier detection before or at early pregnancy through a wide screening program may not only confer a risk of having offspring with Fragile X syndrome (FXS), but may also confer a risk for Fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome. However, prior to the implementation of such a program, the carrier prevalence in a population and the availability of effective screening test should be evaluated. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of premutation carriers and to evaluate the feasibility of screening test. Materials and Methods: The blood samples were obtained from 8,641 pregnant women with no family history of mental retardation. We performed a three-primer CGG repeat primed (RP) PCR using the AmplideX$^{TM}$ FMR1 PCR kit (Asuragen, Inc. Austin, TX, USA). Samples showing full mutation alleles were reflexed to Southern blot analysis for methylation status and sizing. Results: Among the 8,641 women, we found 8 premutation carriers (1:1,090, 0.09%) and 46 women with an intermediate allele (1:190, 0.53%). No woman was found to carry the fully mutated allele. All the detected alleles were within the CGG repeat range of 8-117. Among the 8,641 samples, 29 and 30 CGG repeats represent 66.6% of all cases. The CGG RP PCR method provides robust detection of expanded alleles and resolves allele zygosity, thus minimizing the number of samples that require Southern blot analysis. Conclusion: This is the first study that has focused on the prevalence of FXS premutation carriers and FMR1 allele distribution in normal pregnant women. These data have important implications for population-based fragile X carrier screening in Korea.

  • A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary fish meal replacement by a blend of lysine cell mass, corn protein concentrate and poultry by-product meal on the growth and blood chemistry of the starry flounder Platichthys stellatus. The fish meal replacer (FMR) was prepared to have the same level of protein as fish meal (FM). With a commercial diet as a positive control, five experimental diets (basal, FM42, FM32, FM22 and FM12) were formulated to contain 52% protein and 10% lipid. The dietary FM levels decreased from 52% (basal) to 42, 32, 22 and 12% with concomitant increase in the FMR to 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%, respectively. Juvenile starry flounder with an average body weight of 177.3 g were randomly distributed in each (30 fish/tank) of 18 plastic tanks ($139{\times}99{\times}54cm$). After a 45-day feeding trial, the survival rate ranged from 95.6% (FM22) to 100% (control and FM42), while the weight gain of the fish groups varied from 49.7 to 58.4 g. The results clearly revealed that starry flounder can grow well on a diet containing low FM (12%) with a high level of FMR (50%) without any adverse effects.
