  • The effect of porosity on bending and free vibration behavior of simply supported functionally graded plate reposed on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation is investigated analytically in the present paper. The modified rule of mixture covering porosity phases is used to describe and approximate material properties of the FGM plates with porosity phases. The effect due to transverse shear is included by using a new refined shear deformation theory. The number of unknown functions involved in the present theory is only four as against five or more in case of other shear deformation theories. The Poisson ratio is held constant. Based on the sinusoidal shear deformation theory, the position of neutral surface is determined and the equation of motion for FG rectangular plates resting on elastic foundation based on neutral surface is obtained through the minimum total potential energy and Hamilton's principle. The convergence of the method is demonstrated and to validate the results, comparisons are made with the available solutions for both isotropic and functionally graded material (FGM). The effect of porosity volume fraction on Al/Al2O3 and Ti-6Al-4V/Aluminum oxide plates are presented in graphical forms. The roles played by the constituent volume fraction index, the foundation stiffness parameters and the geometry of the plate is also studied.

  • This paper uses the four-variable refined plate theory for the free vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates. The plate properties are assumed to be varied through the thickness following a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of material constituents. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The closed-form solutions of functionally graded plates are obtained using Navier solution. Numerical results of the refined plate theory are presented to show the effect of the material distribution, the aspect and side-to-thickness ratio on the fundamental frequencies. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the free vibration behavior of functionally graded plates.

  • In this paper, three dimensional static and dynamic analyses of two dimensional functionally graded annular sector plates have been investigated. The material properties vary through both the radial and axial directions continuously. Graded finite element and Newmark direct integration methods have been used to solve the 3D-elasticity equations in time and space domains. The effects of power law exponents and different boundary conditions on the behavior of FGM annular sector plate have been investigated. Results show that using 2D-FGMs and graded elements have superiority over the homogenous elements and 1D-FGMs. The model has been compared with the result of a 1D-FGM annular sector plate and it shows good agreement.

  • This research presents an investigation on the thermal buckling resistance of FGM plates having parabolic-concave thickness variation exposed to uniform and gradient temperature change. An analytical formulation is derived and the governing differential equation of thermal stability is solved numerically using finite difference method. A specific function of thickness variation is introduced where it controls the parabolic variation intensity of the thickness without changing the original material volume. The results indicated that the loss ratio in buckling resistance is the same for any gradient temperature profile. Influencing geometrical and material parameters on the loss ratio in the thermal resistance buckling are investigated which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

  • In this paper, buckling analysis of hybrid functionally graded plates using a novel four variable refined plate theory is presented. In this theory the distribution of transverse shear deformation is parabolic across the thickness of the plate by satisfying the surface conditions. Therefore, it is unnecessary to use a shear correction factor. The variations of properties of the plate through the thickness are according to a symmetric sigmoid law (symmetric S-FGM). The principle virtual works is used herein to extract equilibrium equations. The analytical solution is determined using the Navier method for a simply supported rectangular plate subjected to axial forces. The precision of this theory is verified by comparing it with the various solutions available in the literature.

  • In this paper, a shear deformation plate theory based on neutral surface position is developed for free vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) plates. The material properties of the FGM plates are assumed to vary through the thickness of the plate by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. During manufacture, defects such as porosities can appear. It is therefore necessary to consider the vibration behavior of FG plates having porosities in this investigation. The proposed theory is based on assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The neutral surface position for a functionally graded plate which its material properties vary in the thickness direction is determined. The equation of motion for FG rectangular plates is obtained through Hamilton's principle. The closed form solutions are obtained by using Navier technique, and then fundamental frequencies are found by solving the results of eigenvalue problems. Numerical results are presented and the influences of the volume fraction index and porosity volume fraction on frequencies of FGM plates are clearly discussed.

  • This article investigates the static behaviour of functionally graded (FG) plates sometimes declared as advanced composite plates by using a simple and accurate quasi-3D and 2D hyperbolic higher-order shear deformation theories. The properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction according to exponential law distribution (E-FGM). The kinematics of the present theories is modeled with an undetermined integral component and satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate; therefore, it does not require the shear correction factor. The fundamental governing differential equations and boundary conditions of exponentially graded plates are derived by employing the static version of principle of virtual work. Analytical solutions for bending of EG plates subjected to sinusoidal distributed load are obtained for simply supported boundary conditions using Navier'is solution procedure developed in the double Fourier trigonometric series. The results for the displacements and stresses of geometrically different EG plates are presented and compared with 3D exact solution and with other quasi-3D and 2D higher-order shear deformation theories to verify the accuracy of the present theory.

  • In this work, a simple four-variable integral plate theory is employed for examining the thermal buckling properties of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates. The proposed kinematics considers integral terms which include the effect of transverse shear deformations. Material characteristics and thermal expansion coefficient of the ceramic-metal FGM sandwich plate faces are supposed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a "simple power-law" variation in terms of the "volume fractions" of the constituents. The central layer is always homogeneous and consists of an isotropic material. The thermal loads are supposed as uniform, linear, and nonlinear temperature rises within the thickness direction. The influences of geometric ratios, gradient index, loading type, and type sandwich plate on the buckling properties are examined and discussed in detail.

  • In this work, a new analytical approach using a theory of a high order hyperbolic shear deformation theory (HSDT) has been developed to study the free vibration of plates of functionally graduated material (FGM). This theory takes into account the effect of stretching the thickness. In contrast to other conventional shear deformation theories, the present work includes a new displacement field that introduces indeterminate integral variables. During the manufacturing process of these plates defects can appear as porosity. The latter can question and modify the global behavior of such plates. The materials constituting the plate are assumed to be gradually variable in the direction of height according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The motion equations are derived by the Hamilton principle. Analytical solutions for free vibration analysis are obtained for simply supported plates. The effects of stretching, the porosity parameter, the power law index and the length / thickness ratio on the fundamental frequencies of the FGM plates are studied in detail.
