  • High temperature deformation and softening behavior of SAF 2507 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has been investigated in connection with an FEM analysis of hot forging process. Flow curves at various strain rates and temperatures were determined first from compression tests, and the kinetics of dynamic recrystallization were also formulated through the analysis of load relaxation test results. Applying the dynamic materials and proposed by Prasad et al., it was possible to determine the characteristics of deformation behavior effectively at a given condition of deformation. Constitutive relations and recrystallization kinetics formulated from the test results were then implemented in a commercial FEM code. Flow stress compensation formulated upon the volume fraction of recrystallization and adiabatic heating was found to improve significantly the FEA solutions in predicting the forming load and the distribution of recrystallized volume fraction after forging.

  • In this paper, the algorithm for the static analysis of an axisymmetric cylindrical shell by using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) is suggested. TE-TSCM combining both the modeling procedure of the finite element method (FEM) and the transfer procedure of the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM) has the advantages of FEM and TSCM. After computational programs are made by both FE-TSCM and FEM for the stress analysis of the axisymmetric cylindrical shell, we compare the numerical results by FE-TSCM with those of FEM for two computational models in order to confirm the trust of FE-TSCM.

  • The main object of this study is to develop a reliable FEM simulation technique for the analysis of Steel D&I Can bodymaking process using ABAQUS software. The body making process includes drawing, redrawing, 3 step ironing, doming. The newly developed FEM code in this research is based on the previous research achievement of POSCO for the drawing, redrawing and ironing process. The analysis is performed using two dimensional axisymmetric elements to analyze the punch force, the height of can, the distribution of residual stress and strain. The effect of blank thickness, gap of ironing die is also analyzed.

Flow curves at various strain rates and temperatures were determined first from compression tests, and the kinetics of dynamic recrystallization were also formulated through the analysis of load relaxation test results. The forming load as well as the distribution of recrystallized volume fraction after forging was successfully predicted by means of the flow stress compensation formulated upon the volume fraction of recrystallization and adiabatic heating.

  • This paper has studied thermal characteristics of machine tool to develope high speed spindle and optimum design considering the thermal deformation. Comparing the test data of temperature measurement and structural analysis data using FEM, we verified the test validity and predicted thermal deformation, influence of spindle generation of heat, and established cooling system to prevent the thermal deformation. 1) The temperature rise of spindle system depends on increasing number of rotation and shows sudden doubling increment of number of rotation over 7,000rpm. 2) Oil jacket cooling can be effective cooling method below 8,000rpm but, over 8,000rpm, it shows the decrement of cooling effect. 3) Comparing FEM analysis results and revolution test results, we can confirmn approximate temperature change consequently, it is possible to simulate temperature rise and thermal distribution on the inside of spindle system. 4) We can confirm that simulated approach by FEM analysis can be effective mettled in thermal-appropriate design.

  • In the case of the large power transformer, the grain-oriented material is usually used. So, to obtain more accurate results, anisotropy and non-linearity of the material must be considered. The Newton-Raphson(NR) method is generally used for analyzing these non-linear properties, but it consumes so much time, especially when the number of nodes is large or the shape of the model is complex. The transmission line modeling (TLM) method is successfully adopted to the analysis of non-linear properties with FEM, but it has not been adopted to the analysis of the anisotropic material. In this paper, the formulation of the TLM method considering anisotropy is developed and the adoption to the 3-phase transformer is presented.

  • Composite materials have various complicated characteristics depending on the ply materials, ply orientations, ply stacking sequences and boundary conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze composite materials. For efficient use of composite materials in engineering applications, the dynamic behavior such as natural frequencies and nodal patterns should be identified. This study presents FEM results for the free vibration of symmetrically and antisymmetrically laminated composite and hybrid composite rectangular plates. The natural frequencies of laminated composite rectangular plates having the various boundary conditions (completely clamped, 2-edge clamped, cantilevered) are experimentally obtained. In order to demonstrate the validity of the experiment, FEM analysis using ANSYS was performed and natural frequencies experimentally obtained is compared with that calculated by FEM analysis. The results obtained from both experiment and FEM analysis show a good agreement.

  • It is necessary to modify the state-of-the-art of vector control theory, because of the phase asymmetry(static end effect) in the Linear Induction Motor(LIM). The dynamic characteristic analysis method of the vector controlled LIM using coupled FEM and control algorithm taking into account the movement is proposed. The focus of this paper is the analysis relative to phenomena of static end effect due to the motor structure. To prove the propriety of the proposed method, the Digital Signal Processor(DSP) installed experimental devices are equipped and the experiment is performed.

  • This paper describes an analysis method based on the experimental parameter for the 0.9kW starter motor of vehicle with permanent magnet and pole core, and analyzed the influence by the effect of pole core of starting motor by using the 2D-FEM analysis technique to reflect the structural characteristic of 3D. A starter motor consists mainly of armature, yoke and permanent magnet with the pole core. Additionally, there is different the axial length of each part. Therefore, the effective of analysis method is needed to improve the characteristic of it. This paper approached the 2D-FEM analysis estimated by the 3D-EMCN(Three Dimensional Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network) instead of the 3D-FEM analysis to minimize parameters. As a result, this paper is proposed the validity of 2D-FEM analysis and obtained reasonable results for improving a performance.
