  • By using the FEM, a method for the stress analysis of the presented dies has been proposed. In this method, FEM and Lame equation are used for the analysis of the die insert and the stress ring, respectively. The proposed method includes the calculation of the contact pressure between the die insert and the stress ring. To show the validity, the proposed method has been applied to the simple test problem. The results of the stress analysis have been compared with the results of ANSYS, a commercial FE-code. Cold extrusion has been simulated by using the rigid-plastic FEM and the results of the deformation analysis have been used as the input of the die structure analysis. The stress states of the prestressed extrusion die have been obtained. The stress analysis of the die insert with stress rings has also been performed during extrusion.

  • The present study was an attempt for systematic data conversion between FDM and FEM in order to evaluate the thermal stress distribution during quenching process. It has been generally recognized that FDM is efficient in flow and temperature analysis and FEM in that of stress. But it induced difficulty and tedious work in analysis that one uses both FDM and FEM to take their advantages because of the discrepancy of nodes between analysis tools. So we proposed field data conversion procedure from FDM to FEM in 3-dimensional space, then applied this procedure to analysis of quenching process. The simulation procedure calculates the distributions of temperature and microstructure using FDM and microstructure evolution equations of diffusion and diffusionless transformation. FEM was used for predicting the distributions of thermal stress. The present numerical code includes coupled temperaturephase transformation kinetics and temperature-microstructure dependent material properties. Calculated results were compared with previous experimental data to verify the method, which showed good agreements.

  • CB100 is one of the channel type products in the steel beam. In this study, rolling process of CB100 is analyzed by 3D FEM simulation and rolling process. FEM simulation result is compared with rolling process data. Also the intermediate & finishing roll stress analysis is carried out and the suitability of the roll through roll stress resultant analysis is evaluated. In order to decrease the roll stress, new pass schedule is developed for stable load balance between intermediate and finishing rolling stand. Therefore new rolling pass schedule is verified by the analysis results of rolling process and roll stress. By the analysis results, the credibility of rolling process analysis was obtained and it was determined that the possibility of roll damage between intermediate and finishing mill was high. So the new pass schedule was developed. Through the result of rolling process and roll stress analysis, it was obtained that the reduction of roll stress and stable load balance.

  • AB100 & CB100 are general products in the steel beam of the section shape. They are applied for construction, welding and shipbuilding structures. But currently roll damages are generated in the intermediate & finish mills during producing AB 100, CB100. The goal of this project is to conduct rolling & roll stress analysis using the 3D FEM program and to research the things which roll diameter affects roll stress. By the analysis results, it is determined that the recording roll stress where the roll diameter will be big comes to be small, and it is recognized that roll damage occurrences of finish rolling mills can be high by roll stress analysis results.

  • Determining the residual stress during casting processes is important for evaluating the mechanical properties and strength of materials and to optimize manufacturing conditions. In this study, we propose a field data interface procedure between FDM and FEM in a 3-dimensional space for analyzing the casting process and structural analysis. The casting process was analyzed using FDM and the data of the temperature distribution were converted into a format suitable for FEM analysis to calculate the thermal stress and safety factor by tightening force. The results of the coupled analysis between FDM and FEM showed that casting residual stress is an important factor in predicting life time and evaluating durability.

  • Steel bridges, which have been damaged by load and corrosion, need repair or strengthening. In general, before the repair welding procedure, cutting procedure carry out. Therefore, the investigating of the behavior of stress generated by cutting is so important for safety of structure. Residual stress produced by gas cutting was analyzed using 2D and 3D thermal elasto-plastic FEM. According to the results, the magnitude of temperature was analyzed by 2D-FEM is smaller than that was analyzed using the 3D-FEM program at the start and end edge of flange. And the magnitude and distribution of residual stress of perpendicular to the cutting line was analyzed by the 2D-FEM program was similar to that was analyzed by the 3B-FEM program. Therefore, it is possible to predict of cutting stress by 2D and 3D FEM.

  • Polymerization shrinkage stress analysis of dimethacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) and silorane-based composite (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) used for dental composite restorations was performed using strain-gage measurement and FEM analysis. A theoretical equation based on Young's modulus and polymerization shrinkage of the composite resin was proposed to predict the polymerization shrinkage stress. Experimental results showed that the maximum shrinkage stress of Clearfil AP-X was about 2.8 times higher than Filtek P90. FEM analysis agreed with such experimental stress behaviours and showed that the maximum Von-Mises stress appeared near the margin of the filled resin adhered with PMMA ring. The stress concentration at the interface on the specimen surface was higher than that in the interior. The maximum error of shrinkage stress by the theoretical equation was reasonable within 5% in comparison to FEM results under plane stress.

  • In order to evaluate fatigue endurance for the rocker arm of a diesel engine, stress measurements were performed using the strain gages attached near the neck, where is one of the most critical region in the rocker arm, in variation of the engine speed. The fatigue life experiments were carried out on miniature specimens from the rocker arms. For evaluating the fatigue endurance of the rocker arm, the S-N data were compared with the stress analysis results through FEM analysis of the rocker arm. The effective stress of the neck region was determined 17.7MPa through FEM analysis of the rocker arm. Conclusively, on the basis of fatigue limit, the rocker arm has a safety factor of 2.8 or 3.4 from the stress measurement or FEM results, respectively.

  • Finite element method (FEM) is an effective quantitative method to solve complex engineering problems. The basic idea of FEM for a complex problem is to be able to find a solution by reducing the problem made simple. If mathematical tools are inadequate to obtain precise result, even approximate result, FEM is the only method that can be used for structural analyses. In FEM, the domain is divided into a large number of simple, small and interconnected sub-regions called finite elements. FEM has been used commonly for linear and nonlinear analyses of different types of structures to give us accurate results of plane stress and plane strain problems in civil engineering area. In this paper, FEM is used to investigate stress analysis of a shear wall which is subjected to concentrated loads and fundamental principles of stress analysis of the shear wall are presented by using matrix displacement method in this paper. This study is consisting of two parts. In the first part, the shear wall is discretized with constant strain triangular finite elements and stiffness matrix and load vector which is attained from external effects are calculated for each of finite elements using matrix displacement method. As to second part of the study, finite element analysis of the shear wall is made by ANSYS software program. Results obtained in the second part are presented with tables and graphics, also results of each part is compared with each other, so the performance of the matrix displacement method is demonstrated. The solutions obtained by using the proposed method show excellent agreements with the results of ANSYS. The results show that this method is effective and preferable for the stress analysis of shell structures. Further studies should be carried out to be able to prove the efficiency of the matrix displacement method on the solution of plane stress problems using different types of structures.

  • In this study, Analyzed stress history, state of stress, ratio of stress/strength to use FEM. Fault Zone depth is 3m, 6m, 9m, 12m and 15m for study, and also Distance is 3m, 6m, 9m, 12m and 15m at center of tunnel with thickness 3m fault zone. It is not appeared that Arching in stress state and stress history by FEM. On the other hand, excessive shear stress and high compressive stress happened. Therefore, Tunnel design is desirable that do it so that state of stress that is the imbalance may be uplemented. it is important that examine each state of stress and stress history in detail tunnel design.
