This paper investigates the design equations and the strength behavior of the diaphragm for steel box beams and circular-column connections. The strength of the connection is decided by the strength of the diaphragm and the strength of the beam and the column, because the connection diaphragm supports the concentration forces from the box beam's lower flange. In previous researches, however, the calculation procedure of the diaphragm stress from the indeterminate curved-beam model is to complicated to apply in process of the equation. Moreover, no reasonable design has yet ben made because the diaphragm's effect on the strength of the connection has not ben considered. Therefore, through nonlinear FEM analysis of the connection diaphragm, this study examines the strength behavior of a connection with diaphragm details. In addition, a great difference is confirmed between the theoretical and analytic behaviors. Fi naly, considering the strength of the connection and the rigidity capacity of the diaphragm, the diaphragm design method is proposed.
When conducting CTOD test, especially in thick welded steel plate, fatigue pre-cracking occasionally failed to satisfy the requirements of standards thus making the test result invalid. Internally accumulated residual stress of test piece has been thought as one of the main reasons. The propagation of fatigue crack, started from the tip of machined notch, which might have propagated irregularly due to residual stress field. To overcome this kind of difficulty three methods to modify the residual stress are suggested in standard i.e. local compression, reverse bending and stepwise high-R ratio method. In this paper not only multi pass welding but also local pre-compressing process of thick steel plate has been simulated using finite element method for clarifying variation of internal welding residual stress. The simulated results show that welding residual stress is compressive in the middle section of the model and it is predominantly increased after machining the specimen. Comparing as-welded state all component of the welding residual stress changing to compressive in the tip of machine notch whereas residual stress of the outer area remain as tensile condition relatively. Analysis results also show that this irregular residual stress distribution is improved to be more uniformly by applying local compression.

The mode II fracture behavior of a single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) containing a center crack was characterized with the results of an atomistic simulation and an analytical model. The fracture of zigzag graphene models was analyzed with molecular dynamics and the mode II fracture toughness was found to be $2.04MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. The in-plane shear fracture of a cellular material was analyzed theoretically for deriving the $K_{IIc}$ of SLGS, and FEM results were obtained. Mixed-mode fracture of SLGS was studied for various mode I and mode II ratios. The mixed-mode fracture criterion was determined, and the obtained fracture envelope was in good agreement with that of another study.
The grid structures with welded hollow spherical joint (WHSJ) have gained increasing popularity for use in industrial buildings with suspended cranes, and usually welded with steel tube (ST). The fatigue performance of steel tube-welded hollow spherical joint (ST-WHSJ) is however not yet well characterized, and there is little research on fatigue life prediction methods of ST-WHSJ. In this study, based on previous fatigue tests, three series of specimen fatigue data with different design parameters and stress ratios were compared, and two fatigue failure modes were revealed: failure at the weld toe of the ST and the WHSJ respectively. Then, S-N curves of nominal stress were uniformed. Furthermore, a finite element model (FEM) was validated by static test, and was introduced to assess fatigue behavior with the hot spot stress method (HSSM) and the effective notch stress method (ENSM). Both methods could provide conservative predictions, and these two methods had similar results. However, ENSM, especially when using von Mises stress, had a better fit for the series with a non- positive stress ratio. After including the welding residual stress and mean stress, analyses with the local stress method (LSM) and the critical distance method (CDM, including point method and line method) were carried out. It could be seen that the point method of CDM led to more accurate predictions than LSM, and was recommended for series with positive stress ratios.

A case study of monitoring and analysis of surface settlement induced by tunneling of Tabriz metro line 2 (TML2) is presented in this paper. The TML2 single tunnel has been excavated using earth pressure balanced TBM with a cutting-wheel diameter of 9.49 m since 2015. Presented measurements of surface settlements, were collected during the construction of western part of the project (between west depot and S02 station) where the tunnel was being excavated in sand and silt, below the water table and at an average axis depth of about 16 m. Settlement readings were back-analyzed using Gaussian formula, both in longitudinal and transversal directions, in order to estimate volume loss and settlement trough width factor. In addition to settlements, face support and tail grouting pressures were monitored, providing a comprehensive description of the EPB performance. Using the gap model, volume loss prediction was carried out. Also, COB empirical method for determination of the face pressure was employed in order to compare with field monitored data. Likewise, FE simulation was used in various sections employing the code Simulia ABAQUS, to investigate the efficiency of numerical modelling for the estimating of the tunneling induced-surface settlements under such a geotechnical condition. In this regard, the main aspects of a mechanized excavation were simulated. For the studied sections, numerical simulation is not capable of reproducing the high values of in-situ-measured surface settlements, applying Mohr-Coulomb constitutive law for soil. Based on results, for the mentioned case study, the range of estimated volume loss mostly varies from 0.2% to 0.7%, having an average value of 0.45%.
Absorbing boundary conditions are used to mitigate undesired reflections that can arise at the model's truncation boundaries. We apply a complex frequency shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) to elastic wave modeling in the frequency domain. Modeling results show that the performance of our implementation is superior to other absorbing boundaries. We consider the coefficients of CFS-PML to be optimal when the kinetic energy becomes to the minimum, and propose the modified CFS-PML that has the CFS-PML coefficient ${\alpha}_{max}$ defined as a function of frequency. Results with CFS-PML and modified CFS-PML are significantly improved compared with those of the classical PML technique suffering from large spurious reflections at grazing incidence.
The plate-type fuel assembly adopted in nuclear research reactor suffers from complicated effect induced by non-uniform irradiation, which might affect its stress conditions, mechanical behavior and thermal-hydraulic performance. A reliable numerical method is of great importance to reveal the complex evolution of mechanical deformation, flow redistribution and temperature field for the plate-type fuel assembly under non-uniform irradiation. This paper is the first part of a two-part study developing the numerical methodology for the thermal-fluid-structure coupling behaviors of plate-type fuel assembly under irradiation. In this paper, the thermal-fluid-structure coupling methodology has been developed for plate-type fuel assembly under non-uniform irradiation condition by exchanging thermal-hydraulic and mechanical deformation parameters between Finite Element Model (FEM) software and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software with Mesh-based parallel Code Coupling Interface (MpCCI), which has been validated with experimental results. Based on the established methodology, the effects of non-uniform irradiation and fluid were discussed, which demonstrated that the maximum mechanical deformation with irradiation was dozens of times larger than that without irradiation and the hydraulic load on fuel plates due to differential pressure played a dominant role in the mechanical deformation.
Soil internal erosion is a phenomenon in which fines attached to the solid skeleton are detached by fluid flow, and this continuous fine migration weakens the hydro-mechanical characteristics of the ground structure. This paper proposed governing equations for fine migration in pore spaces and its related scheme for the numerical analysis. Phase diagram for fine particles includes three different states: detached fines in the liquid phase ($c_e$), attached fines in the solid phase (${\sigma}_a$), and pore-clogged fines in the solid phase (${\sigma}_s$). Numerical formulations for finite element method are developed based on the hydraulic governing equations of pore fluid and fine migration. This study proposed a method of estimating model parameters for fine detachment, attachment, and clogging from 1D erosion experiments. And it proposed an analytical formula for hydraulic permeability function considering fine clogging. Numerical analysis of the previous erosion test developed the numerical scheme and verified the adequacy of fine migration models.
In the current study, the influence of the initial lateral (sweep) shape and the cross-sectional twist imperfection on the lateral torsional buckling (LTB) response of doubly-symmetric steel I-beams was investigated. The material imperfection (residual stress) was not considered. For this objective, standard European IPN 300 beam with different unbraced span was numerically analyzed for three imperfection cases: (i) no sweep and no twist (perfect); (ii) three different shapes of global sweep (half-sine, full-sine and full-parabola between the end supports); and (iii) the combination of three different sweeps with initial sinusoidal twist along the beam. The first comparison was done between the results of numerical analyses (FEM) and both a theoretical solution and the code lateral torsional buckling formulations (EC3 and AISC-LRFD). These results with no imperfection effects were then separately compared with three different shapes of global sweep and the presence of initial twist in these sweep shapes. Besides, the effects of the shapes of initial global sweep and the inclusion of sinusoidal twist on the critical buckling load of the beams were investigated to unveil which parameter was considerably effective on LTB response. The most compatible outcomes for the perfect beams was obtained from the AISC-LRFD formulation; however, the EC-3 formulation estimated the $P_{cr}$ load conservatively. The high difference from the EC-3 formulation was predicted to directly originate from the initial imperfection reduction factor and high safety factor in its formulation. Due to no consideration of geometric imperfection in the AISC-LFRD code solution and the theoretical formulation, the need to develop a practical imperfection reduction factor for AISC-LRFD and theoretical formulation was underlined. Initial imperfections were obtained to be more influential on the buckling load, as the unbraced length of a beam approached to the elastic limit unbraced length ($L_r$). Mode-compatible initial imperfection shapes should be taken into account in the design and analysis stages of the I-beam to properly estimate the geometric imperfection influence on the $P_{cr}$ load. Sweep and sweep-twist imperfections led to 10% and 15% decrease in the $P_{cr}$ load, respectively, thus; well-estimated sweep and twist imperfections should considered in the LTB of doubly-symmetric steel I-beams.

In this paper, we analyzed the usefulness of single-structured printed circuit board (PCB) modeling by using numerical analysis to model the PCB structure applied to a package for semiconductor purposes and applying modeling assuming a single structure. PCBs with circuit layer of 3rd and 4th were used for analysis. In addition, measurements were made on actual products to obtain material characteristics of a single structure PCB. The analysis results showed that if the PCB was modeled in a single structure compared to a multi-layered structure, the warpage analysis results resulting from modeling the PCB structure would increase and there would be a significant difference. In addition, as the circuit layer of the PCB increased, the mechanical properties of the PCB, the elastic coefficient and inertia moment of the PCB increased, decreasing the package's warpage.
