A micromechanics model to describe the elastic behavior of fiber or whisker reinforced metal matrix composites was developed and the stress concentrations between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparison of finite element analysis (FEA). The rationale is based on the replacement of the matrix between fiber ends with the fictitious fiber to maintain the compatibility of displacement and traction. It was found that the new model gives a good agreement with FEA results in the small fiber aspect ratio regime as well as that in the large fiber aspect ratio regime. By the calculation of the present model, stress concentration factor in the matrix and the composite elastic modulus were predicted accurately. Some important factors affecting stress concentrations, such as fiber volume fraction, fiber aspect ratio, end gap size, and modulus ratio, were also discussed.
With increasing demands for high-speed machining and lightweight design of machine tools, increasing likeliness of generation of machine tool spindle vibrations has become an important issue. Spindle vibration has a significant impact on the surface finish of the workpiece in ultra-precision machining. It is necessary to resolve the machine tool spindle vibration in various machining processes to improve machining accuracy. In this paper, a TiC-SKH51 metal-matrix composite was used to suppress the vibration of the machine tool spindle. To confirm the dynamic characteristic of the TiC-SKH51 composite, impact hammer tests were conducted. After verifying the reliability of a finite element analysis (FEA) by comparing the results of the impact hammer test with the modal analysis using FEA, the analysis of the machine tool spindle model was performed. The FEA results show that the TiC-SKH51 composite applied machine tool spindle can be utilized to suppress the vibration generation.

The docking analysis of a global ship structure is requested to evaluate its structural safety against the reaction forces at supports during docking works inside a dry dock. That problem becomes more important recently as the size of ships is getting larger and larger. The docking supports are appropriately arranged in a dock to avoid their excessive reaction forces which primarily cause the structural damages in docking a ship and, up to now, the structural safety has been assessed against the support arrangement by the finite element analysis (FEA) of a global ship structure. However, it is complicated to establish the finite element model of the ship in the current structural design environment of a shipyard and it takes over a month to finish the work. This paper investigates a simple and fast approach to carry out a ship docking analysis by a simplified grillage model and to assign the docking supports position on the model. The grillage analysis was considered from the motivation that only the reaction forces at supports are sufficient to assess their arrangement. Since the simplified grillage model of the ship cannot guarantee its accuracy quantitatively, modeling strategies are proposed to improve the accuracy. In this paper, comparisons between the proposed approach and three-dimensional FEA for typical types of ships show that the results from the present grillage model have reasonably good agreement with the FEA model. Finally, an integrated program developed for docking supports planning and its evaluation by the proposed approach is briefly described.

Though full 3D analysis is the proper method to analyze the hybrid stepping motor (HSM), it has weak points in the areas of computation time and complexity. This paper introduces 2D FEA using a virtual magnetic barrier for the axial cross section to save computation time. For the purpose of 2D FEA, the virtual magnetic barrier and equivalent permanent magnet model of HSM are proposed. This result is compared with that of experimental and 3D analysis, considered as a reference result.
Recently, module-integrated converter (MIC) research has shown interest in small-scale photovoltaic (PV) generation. The converter is capable of efficient power generation. In this system, the high frequency transformer should be made compact, and demonstrate high efficiency characteristics. This paper presents a core structure optimization procedure to improve the efficiency of a high frequency transformer of compact size. The converter circuit is considered in the finite element analysis (FEA) model, in order to obtain an accurate FEA result. The results are verified by the testing of prototypes.

In this paper, we describe the LPM structure with a two-phase, which is not used previously, and explain its operation principle. In order to predict the accurate performance of LPM reduction model, finite element model was derived and the back EMF of LPM reduction model was measured and compared. In order to investigate the thrust and normal force of the LPM reduction model, a driving circuit capable of applying two-phase pulse currents was constructed and the performance was predicted in conjunction with the finite element analysis model. Finally, the design considering actual LPM size was performed. Since the size of the reduction model is small, the field could be made of a permanent magnet. However, it is almost impossible to manufacture a permanent magnet to match the size and capacity of a real LPM for a vehicle, in terms of cost and writing. Therefore, the actual vehicle LPM was replaced by wound type that generates a magnetic field by applying current to the field winding, and the final model was derived using the reaction surface method.

Early age cracking of concrete is a widespread and complicated problem, and diverse applications in practical engineering have focused on this issue. Since massive concrete base slab composes the infrastructure of other concrete structures such as pier, concrete dam, and high rise buildings, early age cracking of that is considered as a crucial problem. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) implemented with the age-dependent microplane model was performed. For a massive concrete base slab, cracking initiation and propagation, and deformation variation were investigated with concrete age. In massive concrete slab, autogenous shrinkage increases the risk of early age cracking and it reduces reinforcement effect on control of early age cracking. Gradual crack occurrence is experienced from exterior surface towards interior of the slab in case of combined hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage. FEA implemented with enhanced microplane model successfully simulates the typical cracking patterns due to edge restraint in concrete base slab.

This study is an investigation for the ADS optimum design by using FEA. We write out program which express ADS perfectly and reduce the required time for correcting of model to the minimum in solution and manufacture result. We complete algorithm which can plan optimum forming of model by feedback error information in CAE. Then we correct model by feedback date obtaining in solution process, repeat course following stress solution again and do modeling rachet wheel for optimum forming. That is our aim. In rachet wheel, greatest equivalence stress originates in key groove corner and KS standard is proved the design for security.
