It has been well known that ductile fracture of steels is accelerated by triaxial stresses. The characteristics of ductile crack initiation in steels are evaluated quantitatively using two-parameters criterion based on equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality. It has been demonstrated by authors using round-bar specimens with circumferential notch in single tension that the critical strain to initiate ductile crack from specimen center depends considerably on stress triaxiality, but surface cracking of notch root is in accordance with constant strain condition. In order to evaluate the stress/strain state in the specimens, especially under dynamic loading, a thermal, elastic-plastic, dynamic finite element (FE) analysis considering the temperature rise due to plastic deformation has been carried out. This study provides the fundamental clarification of the effect of strength mismatching, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, loading mode and loading rate on critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root using equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality based on the two-parameter criterion obtained on homogeneous specimens under static tension. The critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root for strength mismatched bend specimens under both static and dynamic loading would be almost the same as that for homogeneous tensile specimens with circumferential sharp notch under static loading.

This paper compiles solutions of plastic $\eta$ factors and crack tip stress triaxialites for standard and nonstandard fracture toughness testing specimens, via detailed three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) analyses. Fracture toughness testing specimens include a middle cracked tension (M(T)) specimen, SE(B), single-edge cracked bar in tension (SE(T)) and C(T) specimen. The ligament-to-thickness ratio of the specimen is systematically varied. It is found that the use of the CMOD overall provides more robust experimental J estimation than that of the LLD, for all cases considered in the present work. Moreover, the J estimation based on the load-CMOD record is shown to be insensitive to the specimen thickness, and thus can be used for testing specimen with any thickness. The effects of in-plane and out-of-plane constraint on the crack tip stress triaxiality are also quantified, so that when experimental J value is estimated according to the procedure recommended in this paper, the corresponding crack tip stress triaxiality can be estimated. Moreover, it is found that the out-of-plane constraint effect is related to the in-plane constraint effect.
This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis results regarding the effects of an incomplete penetration defect on the fatigue lives of socket welded pipes. For the experiment, four-point bending fatigue tests with various defect geometries (defect depth and circumferential length) were performed, and test results are presented in terms of stress-life data. The results showed that for circumferentially short defects, the fatigue life tends to increase with increasing crack depth, but for longer defects, the trend becomes the opposite. Finite element analysis showed that for short defects, the maximum principal stress decreases with increases in crack depth. For a longer defect, the opposite trend was found. Furthermore, the maximum principal stress tends to increase with an increase in defect length regardless of the defect depth.

Under excessive plasticity, the fracture toughness of a material depends on its size and geometry. Under fully yielded conditions, the stresses in a material near its crack tip are not unique but rather depend on the geometry. Therefore, the single-parameter J-approach is limited to a high-constraint crack geometry. The JQ theory has been proposed for establishing the crack geometry constraints. This approach assumes that the crack-tip fields have two degrees of freedom. In this study, the crack-tip stress field of a fully circumferential surface-cracked pipe under combined loads is investigated on the basis of the JQ theory by using finite element analysis. The combined loads are a tensile axial force and the thermal gradient in the radial direction. Q-stresses of the crack geometry and its loading state are used to determine the constraint effects. The constraint effects of secondary loading are found to be greater than those of primary loading. Therefore, thermal shock is believed to be the most severe loading condition of constraint effects.

To date, a number of stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions have been proposed for the cylindrical structure with circumferential through-wall cracks. However, each solution has a different format as well as applicable range. It is also known that there is a significant difference in predicted SIF values depending on the shape of the structure and the size of the crack. In this study, the applicability of various SIF solutions was analyzed by comparing the finite element analysis results for the case where a tensile load is applied to the cylindrical structure with circumferential through-wall crack. It is found that the calculated SIF gradually decreases and converges to a certain value with increasing length-to-radius ratio. Therefore, an appropriate length-to-radius ratio should be set in consideration of the dimensions of the actual cylindrical structure. For piping with sufficiently long cylinder, the ASME solution is found to be the most appropriate, and for a short cylinder, the API solution should be applied. On the other hand, the WEC solution requires careful attention to its application.

In this study, Charpy impact test and numerical studies were performed to examine the effects of failure behavior and energy absorption on the notch position. For this purpose, carbon steel plate(SA-516 Gr. 70) with thickness of 25mm usually used for pressure vessel was welded by SMAW(Shielded Metal-Arc Welding)method and specimens were fabricated from the welded plate. The Charpy impact tests were then performed with specimens having different notch positions varying within HAZ. A series of three-dimensional FE analysis which simulates the Charpy test and crack propagation are carried out as well. We divided HAZ into two, three and four regions to apply mechanical properties of HAZ to FE-analys. Results reveal that the absorbed energies during impact test depend significantly on the notch position. To obtain the results of reliability, HAZ should be divided into at least three regions.

In the composite beam subjected to the hogging moment it is very difficult to evaluate the influence of the reduction of slab stiffness due to cracks and their development on the horizontal shear behavior of shear connection. In this study, a 3D FE model is developed by which one can analyze the composite action in the composite beam subjected to the hogging moment. In this FE model, each structural member and shear connection are modeled as similar as possible to details of the composite beam. Bending behaviour, and composite action which could not be analyzed using the existing 1D or 2D FE model are investigated by the 3D model. Analysis results show that the reinforcement ratio and crack behaviour of the slab are main factors which exert a strong influence on the composite action. According to the analysis results about load-slip behavior, initial crack of slab and yielding of rebars have a influence on the slip stiffness of shear connection. The existing experimental results, that the design of partial interaction can be more efficient in designing of shear connection of the composite beams, are indirectly verified by the FE analysis.
Back-face strain compliance (BFS compliance) for the four-point bend specimen has been calibrated for various crack length ratios. Finite element technique was employed to simulate four-point loading and calculate back-face strain of the bend specimen. The numerically determined strain variation along the back face indicates that the sensitivity to gage placement increases with crack length and back-face strain at the gage length less than O.2W, where W is the width of the bend specimen, can be measured within 5% deviation of the maximum BFS. Non-dimensional back-face strain compliance, -E'BCW, was calibrated with FE analysis and experiment. The experimentally determined compliance indicates good agreement with the numerical compliance and can be expressed as a function of crack length ratio.
To explore seismic behavior of blind bolted concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) frames infilled with precast sandwich composite wall panels (SCWPs), a series tests of blind bolted square CFST frames with precast SCWPs under lateral low-cyclic loading were conducted. The influence of the type of wall concrete, wall-to-frame connection and steel brace setting, etc. on the hysteretic curves and failure modes of the type of composite structure was investigated. The seismic behavior of the blind bolted CFST frames with precast SCWPs was evaluated in terms of lateral load-displacement relation curves, strength and stiffness degradation, crack patterns of SCWPs, energy dissipation capacity and ductility. Then, a finite element (FE) analysis modeling using ABAQUS software was developed in considering the nonlinear material properties and complex components interaction. Comparison indicated that the FE analytical results coincided well with the test results. Both the experimental and numerical results indicated that setting the external precast SCWPs could heighten the load carrying capacities and rigidities of the blind bolted CFST frames by using reasonable connectors between frame and SCWPs. These experimental studies and FE analysis would enable improvement in the practical design of the SCWPs in fabricated CFST structure buildings.
