  • An aggregation multigrid method (AMM) is a leading iterative solver in solid mechanics. Recently, AMM is applied for solving Schur Complement system in the FE analysis of shell structures. In this work, an extended application of AMM for solving Schur Complement system in the FE analysis of continuum elements is presented. Further, the performance of the proposed AMM in multiple load cases, which is a challenging problem for an iterative solver, is studied. The proposed method is developed by combining the substructuring and the multigrid methods. The substructuring method avoids factorizing the full-size matrix of an original system and the multigrid method gives near-optimal convergence. This method is demonstrated for the FE analysis of several elastostatic problems. The numerical results show better performance by the proposed method as compared to the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. The smaller computational cost for the iterative procedure of the proposed method gives a good alternative to a direct solver in large systems with multiple load cases.

  • It is important to compute the structural analysis of plate structures in structural design. In this paper, the author uses the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for the structural analysis of plate structures. The FE-TSCM is based on the concept of the successive transmission of the transfer stiffness coefficient method and the modeling technique of the finite element method (FEM). The algorithm for in-plane structural analysis of a rectangular plate structure is formulated by using the FE-TSCM. In order to confirm the validity of the FE-TSCM for structural analysis of plate structures, two numerical examples for the in-plane structural analysis of a plate with triangular elements and the bending structural analysis of a plate with rectangular elements are computed. The results of the FE-TSCM are compared with those of the FEM on a personal computer.

  • An analytical method for the spectrometric simultaneous determination of the individual ions in the mix-tures of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ ions utilizing a technique of flow injection analysis has been developed. The method was based on the oxidation reaction between $Fe^{2+}$ ion and $H_2O_2$ in an acidic medium and the subsequent formation of a red Fe$(SCN)^{3-x}_x$ ion by the complexation reaction between $Fe^{2+}$ ion and $SCN^-$ ion. Unlike the conventional methods which require separate processes for the pre-treatment of the sample solution, the current method uses the same FIA system for the pre-treatment and the analysis of the sample. The detection limit for the determination of $Fe^{2+}$ ion was found to be 6.00${\times}10^{-7}$M.

  • Aircraft flutter analysis model consists of dynamic FE model and aerodynamic model. Dynamic FE model is composed of stiffness and mass model, and is used for the prediction of normal mode characteristics of the structure. Since aircraft flutter analysis is normally performed in the modal domain, dynamic FE model shall be constructed to describe the modal characteristics of the structure with sufficient accuracy. In this study, dynamic FE modeling method was described using full airframe FE model and structural and system weight data for aircraft flutter analysis. In addition, full airframe dynamic FE model for composite small aircraft was constituted for normal mode and flutter analysis, and the mass modeling results were compared with the target weight data to validate the mass modeling method proposed. Finally, full airframe flutter analysis of composite small aircraft was performed with the dynamic FE model and the aerodynamic model composed.

  • A circular plate is one of the important structures in many industrial fields. In static analysis of a circular plate, we may obtain an exact solution by analytical method, but it is limited to a simple circular plate. Thus, many researchers and designers have used numerical methods such as the finite element method. The authors of this paper developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for static and dynamic analyses of various structures. FE-TSCM is the combination of the modeling technique of the finite element method (FEM) and the transfer technique of the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM). FE-TSCM has the advantages of both FEM and FE-TSCM. In this paper, the authors formulate the computational algorithm for the static analysis of axisymmetric circular plates under lateral loading using FE-TSCM. The computational results for three computational models obtained by FE-TSCM are compared with those obtained by FEM in order to confirm the accuracy of FE-TSCM.

  • Static and dynamic response of a mechanical system can be easily and readily obtained using an approximate method such as the Finite Element Method. However, FE solution cannot be totally trusted, since there are many numerical uncertainies inherent in an FE analysis. FE solution error can be estimated based on FE analysis result. Error estimator shows the quality of the FE solution, and helps FE users to enhance the accuracy of the FE solution.

  • The authors suggest the algorithm for the static analysis of a three dimensional solid structure by using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) and the hexahedral element of the finite element method (FEM). MATLAB codes were made by both FE-TSCM and FEM for the static analysis of three dimensional solid structure. They were applied to the static analyses of a very thick plate structure and a three dimensional solid structure. In this paper, as we compare the results of FE-TSCM with those of FEM, we confirm that FE-TSCM introducing the hexahedral element for the static analysis of a three dimensional solid structure is very effective from the viewpoint of the computational accuracy, speed, and storage.

  • Various finite elements have been studied and developed to analyze a variety of structures in the finite element method(FEM). The transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) is an effective algorithm for structural analysis but the structures which can be applied were limited. In this paper, a computational algorithm for the structural analysis of axisymmetric conical shells under axisymmetric loading is formulated using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method(FE-TSCM). The basic concept of FE-TSCM is the combination of the modeling technique of FEM and the transfer technique of TSCM. The FE-TSCM has all the advantages of both FEM and TSCM. After carrying out the structural analysis of axisymmetric conical shells using FEM, FE-TSCM, and analytical method we compare the computational results of FE-TSCM with those of the other methods in terms of computational accuracy.

  • FE model-based dynamic analysis has been widely used to predict the dynamic characteristics of civil structures. In a physical point of view, an FE model is unavoidably different from the actual structure as being formulated based on extremely idealized engineering drawings and design data. The conventional model updating methods such as direct method and sensitivity-based parameter estimation are not flexible for model updating of complex and large structures. Thus, it is needed to develop a model updating method applicable to complex structures without restriction. The main objective of this paper is to present the model updating method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) by combining the genetic algorithm as global optimization method and modified Nelder-Mead's Simplex method as local optimization method. This FE model updating method using HGA does not need the derivation of derivative function related to parameters and without application of complicated inverse analysis methods. In order to allow its application on diversified and complex structures, a commercial FEA tool is adopted to exploit previously developed element library and analysis algorithms. Moreover, an output-level objective function making use of measurement and analytical results is also presented to update simultaneously the stiffness and mass of the analysis model. The numerical examples demonstrated that the proposed method based on HGA is effective for the updating of the FE model of bridge structures.

  • There has been an increasing need for analytical methods of dissolved total iron (tFe) that are highly sensitive, rapid, inexpensive and simple for environmental samples. A sensitive flow injection analysis (FIA) method for determining the concentration of tFe in environmental samples was developed. The proposed method required 10 minutes and only $500{\mu}L$ of sample for and analysis. The standard deviation was 5.0% at $0.5{\mu}gL^{-1}$ (n=6), and the detection limit was $0.075{\mu}gL^{-1}$. The developed method was applied to environmental samples such as tap water, mineral water, rain, snow and cloud water. Since this FIA system was free form interferences of coexisting ions commonly found in samples, sub-${\mu}gL^{-1}$ level of tFe could be easily determined without further preconcentration and separation.
