  • In this paper, the EM wave absorber was developed for the 94-GHz detecting radar system. To analysis an EM wave absorber in millimeter wave band, we fabricated three absorber samples using carbon black and titanium dioxide and permalloy with chlorinated polyethylene. After measuring the complex relative permittivity, the absorption characteristics are simulated by 1D FDTD according to different thicknesses of less than 1.0 mm. Then, the EM wave absorber was fabricated based on the FDTD simulation. As a result, the measured results agreed well with the simulated ones, and the developed EM wave absorber with a thickness of 0.7 mm had the desired absorption characteristics of more than 14 dB in the frequency range of the 94-GHz band.

  • Characteristics of the photonic bandgaps (PEGs) in two-dimensional photonic crystals (2D PCs) with a square lattice have theoretically studied using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. In this paper, we propose a concept of optical coverage ratio (OCR) as a new structural parameter to determine the PEGs for E-polarized light. The OCR is an optically compensated filling factor. It is possible to normalize the PEGs of 2D PCs by introducing the OCR.

  • In our country, historically beautiful and significant wooden architectures are preserved as the cultural properties. For a long time, however, the architectures are often exposed to rough environmental conditions, such as weathering, insect attack, etc. This may lead to deterioration of structural integrity of the architectures. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose wooden architectures in advance. In this paper, the possibility of a subsurface-penetrating radar(SPR) fur non-destructive testing(NDT) of wooden architectures is investigated by using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) simulation and actual laboratory measurement.

  • Optical tweezers are a tool that can use a tightly focused laser beam to trap and manipulate micron-sized dielectric particles that are immersed in a medium with lower refractive index. In this paper, the calculation of the trapping force of optical tweezers is presented. A nonparaxial Gaussian beam is used to represent a tightly focused Gaussian beam, and the FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used for computing the electromagnetic field distributions in the dielectric medium. Scattered-field formulation is used for analytical expression of the incident fields. Using the electromagnetic field distribution from FDTD simulation, the trapping force is calculated based on Maxwell's stress tensor.

  • In order to analyze optical waveguide, the FDTD method can be applied. But structure of optical waveguide is relatively larger than wavelength of center frequency. But optical waveguide system must be periodic structure and the solution of the waveguide can be obtained from a simulation in one period of the structure by applying PBC(Periodic boundary condition). In this paper, an efficient FDTD algorithm incorporating PBC in inhomogeneous medium is introduced and estimated.

  • In this paper, we developed a numerical analysis model by using ADI-FDTD method to analyze three-dimensional interconnect structure. We discretized maxwell's curl equation by using ADI-FDTD. Using ADI-FDTD method, a sampler circuit designed from 3.3 V CMOS technology is simplified to 3-metal line structure. Using this simplified structure, the time delay and signal distortion of complex interconnects are investigated. As results of simulation, 5∼10 ps of delay time and 0.1∼0.2 V of signal distortion are measured. As demonstrated in this paper, the full-wave analysis using ADI-FDTD exhibits a promise for accurate modeling of electromagnetic phenomena in high-speed VLSI interconnect.

  • Coplanar-type MIS transmission lines have been simulated using FDTD method and compared with the measured results and the simulated results of the reference paper[3]. We can confirm that our simulation results are similar to measured results compared to the previous simulated results of the reference paper. Moreover, variations of characteristic impedance by insulator thickness are calculated for the insulator thickness of 0.0,0.5 and 1.0$\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • In this paper, a planar antenna that is small and light, is designed and analyzed aiming handset antenna of IMT-2000. Employing the Ensemble simulator based on a MoM, design-parameters are found to determine a resonant frequency. Therefore, it is analyzed with the Ensemble simulation and FDTD numerical for resonating at the allocated frequency for IMT-2000 in the fixed antenna dimension of 21$^{\circ}$wing angle that is a design parameter. Analyzing with FDTD method, Though the results of FDTD are very exact, this analysis introduces errors due to the staircasing approximation in the slope of bowtie. To reduce this error, it is divided to 4-ranges where the cell contains the boundary of perfect conductor/free space. Then, each range is calculated by different by different equation, which modify the H-field to add the component of the area and length of the cell filled with free space. Therefore, the modified FDTD algorithm provided with a narrow bandwidth of return loss calculated with a standard FDTD algorithm that can be extended to the desired ranges.

  • In this paper, mutual coupling effect between antennas mounted on UAV(Unmanned Air Vehicle), operating In different frequency bands, is calculated for supposing efficient arrangement. For the calculation, FDTD method is used, simulation parameters are confined to distance between antennas, height of antennas, types of ground, etc. The simulation data are compared with those of other numerical method to confirm accuracy of the results. It is appeared that the critical factor of mutual coupling is height of an antenna relative to that of the other antenna.
