  • The numerical dispersive characteristics and the numerical stability confition of the Multi-Resolution Time-Domain(MRTD) method are calculated. A dispersion analysis of the MRTD schemes including a comparison to Yee's Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) method is given. The superiority of the MRTD method to the spatial discretization is shown. The required computational memory can be reduced by using the MRTD method. We expect that the MRTD method will be very useful method for numerical modelling of electromagnetics.

  • An anatomical head and a multi-layered spherical head with a half-wave handset antenna have been analysed and compared using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) and the Eigenfuntion Expansion Method (EEM), respectively. The analysis shows that results from a simple spherical head with a half-wave antenna can be used to predict the main antenna radiation patters as well as estimates of the peak SAR in a handset user's head. Various representative design data are presented using a six-layered spherical head with a half-wave antenna at 900 MHz

  • This paper presents self-oscillating mixer(SOM) with simple structure which includes dc source, a cross type groove, and a three terminal GaAsFET. By using parasitic elements such as cooper wires, If level of the active antenna is increased. In order to include active device into FDTD analysis, equivalent voltage source are used to substitute for the active device and to describe the voltage-current relationships. This approach is applied to analyze SOM theoretically.

  • A characterization procedure for analyzing symmetric coupled MIS(Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor) transmission line is used the same procedure as a general single layer symmetric coupled line with perfect dielectric substrate from the extraction of the characteristic impedance and propagation constant for even- and odd-mode. In this paper, an analysis for a new substrate shielding symmetric coupled MIS structure consisting of grounded crossbar at the interface between Si and SiO2 layer using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method is presented. In order to reduce the substrate effects on the transmission line characteristics, a shielding structure consisting of grounded crossbar lines over time-domain signal has been examined. Symmetric coupled MIS transmission line parameters for even- and odd-mode are investigated as the functions of frequency, and the extracted distributed frequency-dependent transmission line parameters and corresponding equivalent circuit parameters as well as quality factor for the new MIS crossbar embedded structure are also presented. It is shown that the quality factor of the symmetric coupled transmission line can be improved without significant change in the characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constant.

  • A variety of wireless devices are commercially available now. Most of studies, however, have been directed to the biological effects of mobile-phone EMF. In this paper, dosimetric analysis for wireless devices of head-mounted display type and a wristwatch type were made to investigate possible biological effects of these devices. SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) distributions were calculated using FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) method, for adult human models such as standard Korean human model and VHP(Visible Human Project) model, as well as scaled child models. Measurements were also performed for SAM phantom wearing a simplified prototype for a wireless device for validation of the simulation results. It has been found that children are more vulnerable to such exposure, and these devices could cause some biological effects even for relatively lower power compared to conventional mobile pones.

  • In this paper, the gain of the square hem antenna is enhanced with $3{\times}3$ latticed aperture. In order to get the uniform field distribution on the aperture, the different thicknesses of dielectric plates for the phase compensation are inserted into the center and the edge of the aperture respectively. The proposed horn antenna is designed at 12.5 GHz band, and then the analysis of the field distribution on the aperture is performed by using FDTD method. The radiation pattern is also calculated from the analysis. Based on the measured data, it is verified that the gain of a horn antenna with latticed aperture is 18 dBi and this is 2 dB gain enhancement compare with a normal horn antenna without latticed aperture.

  • Analysis of an indoor propagation channel has conventionally used the ray-tracing method. But, in this paper, we had modelling the channel for three dimensional indoor structure by the finite difference time domain method for three dimensional full wave analysis. An excitation signal of the FDTD method used plane wave. The plane wave was excited using the total field/scattered field method. And absorbing boundary condition used the perfectly matched layer method with 7 layers. An living room for the simulation of indoor channel modeling is surrounded the wall that be composed of the wood, the conductor, the glass and concrete. When there are furniture in the living room or not, it were simulated, respectively. As simulation results, we could identify the fading effect of multipath at indoor propagation environment, calculated mean excess delay and rms delay spread for the receiver design.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of electromagnetic field uniformity in a reverberation chamber that can be used alternatively for the analysis, test and evaluation of electromagnetic interference and immunity. The dual-band diffuser, which can be used at two different frequency bands in a reverberation chamber, is applied, and it is made of two different single-band Schroeder's Quadratic Residue Diffusers. The FDTD method is used to analyze the field characteristics. Compared with single-band diffuser, the dual-band diffuser shows the improvement in not only expansion of test frequency band but also in characteristics of the field uniformity, polarity, power efficiency, and tolerance. Therefore, the reverberation chamber with the dual-band diffuser is a better facility, for the analysis and measurement of electromagnetic interference and immunity, than the reverberation chamber with a single-band diffuser.

  • When wet soil overlies dry soil, which can be found in the infiltration test, the radar wave is not attenuated and guided within wet soil layer. This phenomenon is known to be the dispersive guided wave and happens when the thickness of upper wet layer is less than or comparable to the wavelength of radar wave. In this study, we have conducted the FDTD modeling and obtained the velocity dispersion curve to identify the dispersive guided wave through F-K analysis. This guided wave can be explained by modal propagation theory and a simple inversion code was developed to obtain the two layer's dielectric constants as well as layer thickness. By inverting the dispersion curve from synthetic modeling data, we could obtain the accurate dielectric constants and layer thickness. Moreover, we could enhance the accuracy by including the higher mode data. We expect this method will be very useful to get the quantitative property of subsurface when the condition is similar.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of a double-cone broadband antenna with compact and three-dimensional structure that can be used in UWB system. The theoretical analysis is conducted using a finite difference time domain(FDTD) method. The parameters are the radius, a height of broadband double-cone antennas with shorting plate, and the number of plates on a ground plane. This paper examines influence of structural parameters on return loss. The results show that a condition for an optimum structure of broadband double-cone antennas with shorting plate exists. It also shows that the broadband double-cone antennas with shorting plate have radiation patterns similar to those of a dipole antenna. To verify the theoretical analysis, computed results are compared to experimental results.
