  • This paper aims to evaluate the effects that presence, installation number and capacity of ventilation vent and presence of multiple fire sources have on the behaviour of smoke temperature induced by vehicle fire in road tunnel. Six types of scenarios were assumed and FDS was ran to simulate them. As the number of ventilation vents increases, the smoke temperature are calculated to be reduced, but it is shown that effects exerted by two ventilation vents are almost similar to ones by three ventilation vents. Capacity of ventilation vent has a greater impact on the reduction of smoke temperature than installation number of ventilation vents. Smoke temperatures computed for all scenarios except for scenario No. 1 (without ventilation vent) and scenario No. 6 (with multiple fire sources) above fire source are analyzed to be under $400^{\circ}C$ and it means that the radiation of smoke layer above fire source doesn't induce the ignition of materials around fire source.

  • Purpose: To report clinical appearances and the outcomes of patients treated for wrist laceration with suicidal intent. Materials and Methods: Between March 2005 and February 2008, patients with wrist laceration were treated at our center. Among them, 14 patients with suicidal intent were reviewed retrospectively. They were 8 females and 6 males with a mean age of 33 years at the time of treatment. The side of injured wrist, injured structures, suicidal instrument, the time of injury, a suicidal motive, drug or alcohol abuse or not, indication of combined psychiatric disease, the duration of postoperative treatment, and the results of treatment were analyzed. Results: The injured wrist was the left one in 13 cases (93%), and knife wounds in 11 cases (79%) was the most frequent mechanism of injury. An average of 4.6 structures were injured including 3.5 tendons, 0.57 nerves and 0.5 arteries. The most frequently injured structures were the palmaris longus (71%), FCU (50%), FCR (43%), FDS 3 (36%), FDS 2, median nerve, and ulnar artery (each 29%). Simultaneous injury of both median and ulnar nerves occurred in 3 cases (21%), and simultaneous injury of both radial and ulnar artery occurred in 1 case (7%). The injury time was the night in 12 cases (86%), and the most frequent suicidal motive was human relations such as lover or spouse in 12 cases (86%). In 9 cases (64%), the injured were in a drunken state, 3 cases (21%) had been treated for a psychiatric disease at the time of the injury. The durations of postoperative treatment were an average of 5 days of admission and 1 day follow up. Only 1 case results could be evaluated. Conclusions: Patient's poor compliance in wrist laceration with suicidal intent should be expected and these characteristics may affect the management plan.

  • Among the various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the plant, floral scent plays a key role in attracting pollinators for reproduction and mediates ecological interactions. Floral scent is an important trait and industry drives the competition for flowers with novel scents. Chrysanthemum is one of the well-known ornamental plants and is a popular cut flower across the world. Floral scent and the genes responsible for the floral scent emission are poorly studied in chrysanthemum. In the present study, floral scent and the expression pattern of floral scent genes were analyzed in two chrysanthemum cultivars 'Golden Egg' and 'Gaya Glory'. Initially, intensity of the floral scent in five developing stages of flower including 'budding (B), bud developing (BD), initial blooming (IB), almost open (AO) and open flower (OF)' was analyzed using electronic nose (E-nose) with six metal oxide sensors. Based on the distance analysis, different stages of flower showed different relative intensity of scent according to the sensory evaluation. Although the scent pattern differed by stage, scent intensity was strongest in the OF stage in the completely opened flower in both the cultivars. Further, expression pattern of six genes in the floral scent pathway including FDS, IDI, ISPH, TPS2, TPS5 and TPS6 was observed in all the five stages of the flower in both the cultivars. The expression pattern of all the six genes differed by stage and the terpene synthase genes TPS2, TPS5 and TPS6 showed good expression levels in the $5^{th}$ flower stage compared to other stages. This study provides a preliminary data for understanding the regulation of floral scent in chrysanthemum.

  • The present study has been performed to examine the feasibility of a flame spread model on the design fire scenario for fire risk analysis. Thermo-Gravimetric analysis and sample burning test were conducted to obtain the material properties of a single couch covered with synthetic leather material and a series of FDS calculations applying with the measured material properties were performed for different grid sizes. The overall fire growth characteristics predicted by the fire model were quite different from the results of a real scale fire test and the initial peak value of the HRR and total released energy showed the results within a 30% discrepancy for the computational grids used in the present study. The current model has some limitations in predicting the fire growth characteristics, such as fire growth rate and the time to the maximum HRR. This study shows that the fire model may be applicable to creating the design fire scenario through continuous model improvement and detailed material properties.

  • In this study, a fire and evacuation inside an electronic equipment room in environmental energy facilities were conducted and evaluated using a numerical analysis method. In the fire simulation, the visual distance, temperature distribution, and CO concentration distribution were analyzed using FDS. Based on the results, the Pathfinder program, which is an evacuation simulation, was used to calculate the evacuation time of the occupants and derive an evacuation safety evaluation. As a result, the Available safe Egress time (ASET) of P-01 and P-05 was 203.3 and 398.6 s, respectively. For the Required safety Egress time (RSET) results, all evacuees were evacuated at all points and the safety of the evacuee was secured this simulation showed that the safety evaluation is based on the non - operation of the fire - fighting equipment to improve the safety, making it possible to secure better evacuation safety performance owing to the fire of other fire - fighting facilities.

  • Computational study of a gravity current prior to the backdraft was conducted using fire dynamic simulator (FDS). Various initial conditions of mixture compositions and compartment temperature as well as four opening geometries (Horizontal, Door, Vertical, and Full opening) were considered to figure out their effects on the gravity current. The density difference ratio (${\beta}$) between inside and outside of compartment, the gravity current time ($t_{grav}$) and velocity ($v_{grav}$), and non-dimensional velocity ($v^*$) were introduced to quantify the flow characteristics of the gravity current. Overall fluid structure of the gravity current at the fixed opening geometry showed similar development process for different ${\beta}$ conditions. However, $t_{grav}$ for entering air to reach the opposed wall to the opening geometry increased with ${\beta}$. Door, Vertical, and Horizontal openings where openings are attached on the ground showed similar development process of the gravity current except for Horizontal opening, which located on the middle of the opening wall. The magnitude of $v_{grav}$ at fixed ${\beta}$ was, from largest to smallest, Full > Vertical > Door > Horizontal, but it depended on both the size and location of the opening. On the other hand, $v^*$ was found to be independent to ${\beta}$, and only depended on the geometry of the opening.

  • This paper analyzes the effect of airflow of ceiling air conditioner on the operation of sprinkler head using a simulation program. The simulation space is 10 m × 7 m × 3 m, and the size of the fire is 0.8 m × 0.8 m × 0.6 m. The cold air flow from the air conditioner is at 25℃ and the wind speed is divided into three cases : 10 ㎧, 8.5 ㎧, and 7.5 ㎧. Simulation results show that all cases had operating delays compared to when the air conditioner was not running, and the sprinkler head did not operate until 10 minutes had elapsed at 10 ㎧ wind speed. These results confirmed that the sprinkler head was delayed in the air conditioning space and the worst result of early evolution failure was observed in strong winds such as 10 ㎧.

  • When the fire occur in the deeply underground subway station, the difficulties of passenger evacuation are expected because of many stairs to the exit. In this study, SOONGSIL-University station (7 line, 47m depth) is the one of the deepest subway stations of the each line in the Seoul metro. The numerical computational-simulation was performed for the fire driven flow in the subway station. Hot and smoke flow was analyzed from the simulation results. The proper plan of evacuation against fire was considered through the results. The fire driven flow was simulated using FDS code in which LES method was applied. The Heat Release Rate was 10MW and the ultrafast model was applied for the growing model of the fire source. The proper mesh size was determined from the characteristic length of fire size. The parallel computational method was employed to compute the flow and heat eqn's in the meshes, which are about 10,000,000, with 6cpu of the linux clustering machine.

  • As increasing of smartphone penetration over the world, various mobile payment services have been emerged and fraud transactions have drastically increased. Although many financial companies have deployed security solutions to detect fraud transactions in on/off-line environment, mobile payment services still lack fraud detection solutions and researches. The mobile payment is mainly comprised of micro-payments and payment environment is different from other payments, so mobile-specialized fraud detection is needed. In this paper, we propose a FDS (Fraud Detection System) based on data mining for mobile payment services. The method of this paper is applied to the real data provided by a PG (Payment Gateway) company in Korea. The proposed FDS consists of two phases; (1) the first phase is focused on classifying transactions at high speed (2) the second is designed to detect abnormal transactions with high accuracy. We could detect 13 transactions per second with 93% accuracy rate.

  • A fire and explosion accident caused by a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) welding and cutting torch gas leak occurred 10 m underground at the site of reinforcement work for bridge columns, killing four people and seriously injuring ten. We conducted a comprehensive investigation into the accident to identify the fundamental causes of the explosion by analyzing the structure of the construction site and the properties of propane, which was the main component of LPG welding and cutting work used at the site. The range between the lower and upper explosion limits of leaking LPG for welding and cutting work was examined using Le Chatelier's formula; the behavior of LPG concentration change, which included dispersion and concentration change, was analyzed using the fire dynamic simulator (FDS). We concluded that the primary cause of the accident was combustible LPG that leaked from a welding and cutting torch and formed a explosion range between the lower and upper limits. When the LPG contacted the flame of the welding and cutting torch, LPG explosion occurred. The LPG explosion power calculation was verified by the blast effect computation program developed by the Department of Defense Explosive Safety Board (DDESB). According to the fire simulation results, we concluded that the welding and cutting torch LPG leak caused the gas explosion. This study is useful for safety management to prevent accidents caused by LPG welding and cutting work at construction sites.
