The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of fall injuries on the balancing abilities and ankle flexibility. Fifteen of the voluntary participants had no experience of falling in the last two years (none falling group, NFG) and 15 others experienced at least one (falling group, FG). Static balance (sway length, sway area), dynamic balance (timed up and go (TUG), and functional to reach test (FRT) were measured in each group. In comparison of static balance, sway length was not significantly different between NFG and FG in both eyes open and eyes close, however the sway area of the FG was significantly wider than that of the NFG (p<.05). In dynamic balance comparisons, TUG of FG was significantly longer than that of NFG (p <.05), however FRT and STS were no significant difference between groups. Ankle flexibility was significantly higher in NFG than in FG. This study suggests that the fall prevention program should include methods for improving ankle stability and lower extremity function.
Purpose: Falls are a common cause of unintentional injuries in infants. This study was conducted to examine the patterns of healthcare utilization following infant falls in South Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized an online survey designed to gather information regarding the general characteristics of parents and infants, fall-related variables, and healthcare use. Results: The most serious falls identified by parents occurred at an average infant age of 6.97 months. Most fall incidents took place indoors (95.7%), and many occurred under the supervision of caregivers (68.0%). Following the fall, 36.4% of the participants used healthcare services. Logistic regression analysis revealed that healthcare use following an infant fall was significantly associated with being a firstborn child (odds ratio [OR]=5.32, 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.19-15.28) and falling from a caregiver's arms (OR=4.22; 95% CI, 1.45-13.68). Conclusion: To prevent and decrease the frequency of infant falls, improvements are needed in both the domestic environment and parenting approaches.
Rock fall protection system installed against rock slope is one of the most conventional way to protect nearby infra structures. Despite of wide application of typical rectangular nets, virtually installed to protect rock slope face, several problems have also been pointed out up to date. Rectangular draped nets are vulnerable to a sudden external shock such as rock fall, because it doesn't have any systematical buffers or shock absorbers. Furthermore, it has been widely recognized from the some cases of rock fall accident in Korea that rock fall protection nets cause wide range of failure in the rock slope faces due to insufficient pullout bearing capacity of fixing parts. Therefore, in this study, we tried to make a consideration about the problems of existing standard rock fall protection nets in Korea, and develop a new type of hexagonal net with a shock absorber based on design rock fall energy. In this paper, laboratory and full scale test procedure is described to analysis the performance of newly developed hexagonal rock fall net, and the key results are presented and discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of falls and identify risk factors associated with falls. Methods: The participants were 233 community-dwelling elderly people in two cities. Data were collected by interviewing the elderly with structured questionnaires from May to June, 2012. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were performed using SPSS version 17.0. Results: Age, educational level, living arrangement, health status, the use of assistive devices, the number of medication, hypertension, arthralgia, dizziness, fall efficacy, fear of falling, activity of daily living, and quality of life were significant associated with fall experience. Through multiple logistic regression analysis, arthralgia, dizziness, fall efficacy, and fear of falling were identified as significant predictors of falls. Conclusion: It is important to identify the risk factors for falls among the elderly living in community. Fall prevention interventions should be multifactorial, especially for the elderly who were identified as the high risk group.
Since 1990 in South Korea, the considerable concern for the safety of construction sights has been increased due to serious accidents. There have been numerous big improvements in preventing the accidents by strengthening legal enforcement and by continuing to emphasize the safety management. Further, the safety standards and criteria for temporary constructional work have been enacted and established in order to maintain safe work environments in temporary construction and structure settings. However, the death rate from fall accidents is still high in the temporary constructional and structural settings in comparison to other work places in construction. According to the analysis of accidents in the field of construction between 2000 and 2007, the death rate from fall accidents in the temporary constructional settings was highest. In addition, there have been more fall accidents in the work setting by small or medium construction enterprises rather than large enterprises due to the relative lack of the safety management. Thus, in this study, the analysis of the causes of fall accidents in the temporary constructional and structural settings between 2000 and 2007 was conducted. Moreover, a survey study was carried out in order to investigate further causes based on the analysis. Finally, this study was also conducted in order to provide basic information and knowledge about the prevention of future accidents.
The aim of this study was to select useful items for assessing fall risk in community-dwelling elderly. This study assumed five fall risk factors: Symptoms of falling, physical function, disease and physical symptoms, environment, and behavior and character based on previous studies. The questionnaire consisted of 44 items according to the contents validation, crossover analysis and factor analysis. The Korean version of the Fall Risk Assessment Scale (FRA-K) will be used as a useful tool to improve the fall problems perceived to be serious social problems and to provide important information for prevention of falls.
Background : The purpose of this study was to investigate on the ankle pain, Range of Motion(ROM) and balance ability with old man have fall down experience used to ankle strengthening exercise for 6 weeks. We introduced ankle strengthening exercise in this study in order to recover the pain, ankle ROM and balance ability. Methods : Twenty-four old mans have fall down experience were included for the study. Among them, twelve old mans(experimental group) were ankle strengthening exercise and physical science methods(H/P, TENS, U/S), another twelve old mans(control group) were treated by physical science methods(H/P, TENS, U/S). Each group made use of Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) to pain and goniometer to ankle ROM and Berg Balance Test(BBS) to balance ability to compare the possible changes of pain, ROM and balance ability in two groups after treatment. Results : In experimental group, pain reduced, ankle ROM has increased in dorsi-flexion, plantar-flexion and balance ability has increased for 6 weeks. In control group, pain reduced, ankle ROM has not changed in dorsi-flextion, plantar-flextion and balance ability has not changed for 6 weeks. Conclusion : According to the results, we concluded that ankle strengthening exercise for 6 weeks is effective for reducing pain and increasing ankle ROM and balance ability. Therefore, we thought the old man have fall dawn experience need ankle strengthening exercise for prevention repeatedly fall down.

The number of apartment houses has accounted for more than 50% of all domestic residential types in Korea since 1980s. However, the apartment house has environmentally disadvantageous conditions such as highly residential-density and potential falls by children aged seven years and under through windows. In this study, we aim to suggest some ideas to improve domestic performance assessment methods and criteria of window Insect screens for protection on security and fall prevention by analyzing domestic standard with several overseas codes related to the screens for windows.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the balance confidence and balance ability among community-residing stroke patients. Methods: The sample for this study was a convenience sample obtained from patients who visited welfare centers for the disabled in three cities from October to December in 2009. The Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale and Berg Balance Scale were used to measure confidence in task performance and balance ability. Results: The level of balance confidence and balance ability were low in these subjects. There was a significant relationship between balance confidence and balance ability (r=.424, p=.000). Subjects with less balance ability felt less balance confidence. Conclusion: Among community-residing stroke patients, falls are common. Falls prevention which may contribute to the incidence of fall and fall related injury should be part of stroke rehabilitation plan. Also, it is necessary that an intervention for falls prevention after stroke should take into account factors such as the balance confidence and balance ability.
