This study was performed to determine the usefulness of scanpath similarity analysis as one of new web usability testing. The 5 websites of public institutions were used and 15 students participated. First of all, eye movements were tracked and visual appeal ratings were measured as participants freely viewed each website for 3 seconds. Subsequently in continuously tracking the eye movements we asked the participants to perform 17 missions. Finally, in interview the participants rated on satisfaction, awareness, and mission difficulty. Results of this study showed that scanpath similarity had a significant relationship with both the visual appeal ratings(first impression) and the satisfaction. In other words, higher the visual appeal ratings were related to higher scanpath similarity. This result showed that measurement such as scanpath similarity of eye movements could become an objective index for usability testing instead of subjective evaluation such as the satisfaction. We discussed possibility that the usability testing by using the scanpath similarity with both fixation and duration on eye movements will find more appropriately inference on observers' experiences in websites.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate how well eye movement times in visual target selection tasks by an eye input device follows the typical Fitts' Law and to compare vertical and horizontal eye movement times. Background: Typically manual pointing provides excellent fit to the Fitts' Law model. However, when an eye input device is used for the visual target selection tasks, there were some debates on whether the eye movement times in can be described by the Fitts' Law. More empirical studies should be added to resolve these debates. This study is an empirical study for resolving this debate. On the other hand, many researchers reported the direction of movement in typical manual pointing has some effects on the movement times. The other question in this study is whether the direction of eye movement also affects the eye movement times. Method: A cursor movement times in visual target selection tasks by both input devices were collected. The layout of visual targets was set up by two types. Cursor starting position for vertical movement times were in the top of the monitor and visual targets were located in the bottom, while cursor starting positions for horizontal movement times were in the right of the monitor and visual targets were located in the left. Results: Although eye movement time was described by the Fitts' Law, the error rate was high and correlation was relatively low ($R^2=0.80$ for horizontal movements and $R^2=0.66$ for vertical movements), compared to those of manual movement. According to the movement direction, manual movement times were not significantly different, but eye movement times were significantly different. Conclusion: Eye movement times in the selection of visual targets by an eye-gaze input device could be described and predicted by the Fitts' Law. Eye movement times were significantly different according to the direction of eye movement. Application: The results of this study might help to understand eye movement times in visual target selection tasks by the eye input devices.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference between eye movements according to science achievement of elementary school students on measuring tasks. Science achievement was graded by the results of Korea national achievement test conducted in 2012. As an assessment tool to check measuring task, two measuring measure problems from TSPS(Test of Science Process Skill; developed in 1994) which were suitable for eye tracking system were adopted. The subjects of this study were 3 underachievers and 3 overachievers from 6th grade who agreed to participate in the research. SMI was used to collect EMD (eye movement data). Experiment 3.2 and BeGaze 3.2 programs were used to plan experiment and analyze EMD. As a result, eye movements of participants in measuring task did not show the path to the common gaze by groups. To solve the problem of using specific measuring strategies related to the correct answer. Underachiever who failed in measuring tasks don't have enough measurement capabilities and lack eye movement through the area of interest for cognitive thinking. These results show that elementary school science curriculum dealing with measuring have to reflect a lot of step-by-step learning requires.

For a sophisticated humanoid that explores and learns its environment and interacts with humans, anthropomorphic physical behavior is much desired. The human vision system orients each eye with three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) in the directions of horizontal, vertical and torsional axes. Thus, in order to accurately replicate human vision system, it is imperative to have a simulator with 3-DOF end-effector. We present a 3-DOF anthropomorphic oculomotor system that reproduces realistic human eye movements for human-sized humanoid applications. The parallel link architecture of the oculomotor system is sized and designed to match the performance capabilities of the human vision. In this paper, a biologically-inspired mechanical design and the structural kinematics of the prototype are described in detail. The motility of the prototype in each axis of rotation was replicated through computer simulation, while performance tests comparable to human eye movements were recorded.
Objectives : The deficit of recognition memory has been found as one of the common neurocognitive impairments in patients with schizophrenia. In addition, they were reported to fail to enhance the memory about emotional stimuli. Previous studies have shown that bilateral eye movements enhance the memory retrieval. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to investigate the memory enhancement of bilaterally alternating eye movements in schizophrenic patients. Methods : Twenty one patients with schizophrenia participated in this study. The participants learned faces (angry or neutral faces), and then performed a recognition memory task in relation to the faces after bilateral eye movements and central fixation. Recognition accuracy, response bias, and mean response time to hits were compared and analysed. Two-way repeated measure analysis of variance was performed for statistical analysis. Results : There was a significant effect of bilateral eye movements condition in mean response time(F=5.812, p<0.05) and response bias(F=10.366, p<0.01). Statistically significant interaction effects were not observed between eye movement condition and face emotion type. Conclusions : Irrespective of the emotional difference of facial stimuli, recognition memory processing was more enhanced after bilateral eye movements in patients with schizophrenia. Further study will be needed to investigate the underlying neural mechanism of bilateral eye movements-induced memory enhancement in patients with schizophrenia.
The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary teachers' science class objectively and quantitatively using Mobile Eye Tracker. The mobile eye tracker is easy to wear in eyeglasses form. And experiments are collected in video form, so it is very useful for realizing objective data of teacher's class situation in real time. Participants in the study were 2 elementary teachers, and they are teaching sixth grade science in Seoul. Participants took a 40-minute class wearing a mobile eye tracker. Eye movements of participants were collected at 60 Hz, and the collected eye movement data were analyzed using SMI BeGaze 3.7. In this study, the area related to the class was set as the area of interest, we analyzed the visual occupancy of teachers. In addition, we analyzed the linguistic interaction between teacher and students. The results of the study are as follows. First, we analyze the visual occupancy of meaningful areas in teaching-learning activities by class stage. Second, the analysis of eye movements when teachers interacted with students showed that teacher A had a high percentage of students' faces, while teacher B had a high visual occupation in areas not related to classes. Third, the linguistic interaction of the participants were analyzed. Analysis areas include questions, attention-focused language, elementary science teaching terminology, daily interaction, humor, and unnecessary words. This study shows that it is possible to analyze elementary science class objectively and quantitatively through analysis of visual occupancy using mobile eye tracking. In addition, it is expected that teachers' visual attention in teaching activities can be used as an index to analyze the form of language interaction.

Gaze detection is to locate the position on a monitor screen where a user is looking by computer vision. Previous gaze detection system uses a wide view camera, which can capture the whole face of user. However, the image resolution is too low with such a camera and the fine movements of user's eye cannot be exactly detected. So, we implement the gaze detection system with a wide view camera and a narrow view camera. In order to detect the position of user's eye changed by facial movements, the narrow view camera has the functionalities of auto focusing and auto pan/tilt based on the detected 3D facial feature positions. As experimental results, we can obtain the facial and eye gaze position on a monitor and the gaze position accuracy between the computed positions and the real ones is about 3.1 cm of RMS error in case of Permitting facial movements and 3.57 cm in case of permitting facial and eye movement. The processing time is so short as to be implemented in real-time system(below 30 msec in Pentium -IV 1.8 GHz)
In current video-conferencing systems. user's face movements are restricted by fixed camera, therefore it is inconvenient to users. To solve this problem, tracking of face movements is needed. Tracking using whole face needs much computing time and whole face is difficult to define as an one feature. Thus, using several feature points in face is more desirable to track face movements efficiently. This paper addresses an effective eye location algorithm which is essential process of automatic human face tracking system for natural video-conferencing. The location of eye is very important information for face tracking, as eye has most clear and simplest attribute in face. The proposed algorithm is applied to candidate face regions from the face region extraction. It is not sensitive to lighting conditions and has no restriction on face size and face with glasses. The proposed algorithm shows very encouraging results from experiments on video-conferencing environments.
Anumber of prior studies have reported eye movement dysfunction in patients with dementia. The eye movement test which is non-invasive can evaluate the local brain function quantitatively. Therefore, it can be a useful method for characterizing regional brain abnormalities of patients with dementia. The aim of this paper is to review the literatures on eye movement abnormalities in dementia patients. Saccade system dysfunctions in Alzheimer disease include increased latency, reduced accuracy, and increased antisaccade error rates. Patients with frontotemporal dementia showed impaired reflexive saccade inhibition and increased latency and errors of antisaccade task. And delayed initiation of voluntary saccades, slow saccades, and increased errors and latency on antisaccade task were found in Huntington's disease. Patients with Parkinson’s disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies have characteristics of impaired in both reflexive saccade execution and complex saccade performance. However, there were few reports of abnormal eye movements in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease; they could be found at the later stages after symptoms of dementia came to be evident, and secondary to cerebellar and vestibular involvement. Slowing of saccades and hypometric saccades might precede the supranuclear limitation of vertical gaze in PSP. Dysfunction of voluntary eyelid movements was a characteristic finding of PSP as well. In conclusion, patients with dementia can show various abnormal eye movements and they are related with cortial and subcortical brain dysfunctions. The research on localization of brain relevant to each symptom can promise more clinical implications of eye movement of dementia.
The measurement and evaluation of an audience's visual attention are crucial processes for the scientific production of various contents and services. It has been alleged that a vector exists between objects on a screen, but this has not been explored empirically. This study tested whether or not there are any positive correlations between screen vectors and viewers' eye movements. Participants were exposed to four groups of pictures representing an independent vector, continuing vector, converging vector, and diverging vector. The results showed that vectors on screens induced viewers' eye movements to the vector object by the directivity of the visual stimuli.
