Sleep Promoting Effect of Luteolin in Mice via Adenosine A1 and A2A Receptors

  • Luteolin, a widespread flavonoid, has been known to have neuroprotective activity against various neurologic diseases such as epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease. However, little information is available regarding the hypnotic effect of luteolin. In this study, we evaluated the hypnotic effect of luteolin and its underlying mechanism. In pentobarbital-induced sleeping mice model, luteolin (1, and 3 mg/kg, p.o.) decreased sleep latency and increased the total sleep time. Through electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) recording, we demonstrated that luteolin increased non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep time and decreased wake time. To evaluate the underlying mechanism, we examined the effects of various pharmacological antagonists on the hypnotic effect of luteolin. The hypnotic effect of 3 mg/kg of luteolin was not affected by flumazenil, a GABAA receptorbenzodiazepine (GABAAR-BDZ) binding site antagonist, and bicuculine, a GABAAR-GABA binding site antagonist. On the other hand, the hypnotic effect of 3 mg/kg of luteolin was almost completely blocked by caffeine, an antagonist for both adenosine A1 and A2A receptor (A1R and A2AR), 8-Cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX), an A1R antagonist, and SCH-58261, an A2AR antagonist. From the binding affinity assay, we have found that luteolin significantly binds to not only A1R but also A2AR with $IC_{50}$ of 1.19, $0.84{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. However, luteolin did not bind to either BDZ-receptor or GABAAR. From these results, it has been suggested that luteolin has hypnotic efficacy through A1R and A2AR binding.

노트북 거치대가 건강한 젊은 성인 손목관절근육의 생체역학적 특징에 미치는 영향 (Effects of a Notebook Computer Supporter on Biomechanical Characteristics in Wrist Joint Muscles of Healthy Young Adults)

  • Purpose: As laptop use increases throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and its use outside of traditional workstations proliferates, it is imperative to expand the limited research available regarding ergonomic exposure. This study aimed to identify the effects of a laptop supporter on biomechanical characteristics in the wrist joint muscles of healthy young adults. Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study design with thirty-four healthy young adults as participants. They conducted a typing exercise performed under two different conditions, which were with and without a notebook computer supporter. This study measured the biomechanical characteristics of the muscles of the wrist joints including the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), the flexor carpi radialis (FCR), the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL), and the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU). Measurements were taken three times: before typing, immediately after typing for 30 minutes with a supporter, and immediately after typing for 30 minutes without a supporter. The statistical method to compare the three different measurement conditions was the repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The participants showed significantly different levels of dynamic stiffness in both the FCU before typing and immediately after 30 minutes of typing with a supporter, and showed significantly different levels of dynamic stiffness in the FCR before typing and immediately after 30 minutes of typing with a supporter. The dynamic stiffness level immediately after 30 minutes of typing without a supporter was significantly different than that immediately after 30 minutes of typing with a supporter. However, the muscle tone was not significantly different among the three different conditions. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that a laptop supporter used to correct the eye level of the electronic screen increases the dynamic stiffness of the wrist joint flexors, so it is necessary to consider the neutral position of the wrist joint during typing.

한국 대학의 FLE 문화 교육과 '시간'의 문화적 특성 - 한국과 프랑스의 음주 시간을 중심으로 - ('Time' in French Cultural Education)

  • 본 연구에서는 프랑스어 문화 교육의 관점에서 '시간'의 문화적 특성에 대하여 살펴보았다. 해가 뜨고 지는 자연의 흐름과 시계의 초침이나 달력의 날짜가 '시간'인 듯 간주되지만 엄밀히 말해 일상생활 속에서 우리는 개인이 어떻게 시간을 경험하는지 설명하기는 매우 어렵다. 하물며 외국 문화에 속한 외국인의 일상 의사소통 상황별 시간의 경험을 이해한다는 것은 한국에서 외국어를 배우는 학습자에게는 매우 어려운 목표이다. 문화 인류학자 에드워드 홀에 따르면 각 문화 공동체는 서로 다른 시간 경험을 발전시켜 왔으며, 시간은 공간이나 제스처나 시선, 얼굴 표정과 같이 비언어적 의사소통의 메시지를 전달한다. 본 연구에서는 프랑스와 한국의 술자리 모임의 시간 경험에 대하여 문화 상대주의적인 관점에서 비교하고 살펴보면서, 술 모임의 양태들이 한국과 프랑스의 문화적 특성과 관련하여 어떠한 특성을 나타내는지 분석하였다. 술 모임이란 주제는 일상생활과 관련이 높은 주제이고 인간관계를 맺는 방식과 두 문화의 의사소통 방식을 압축하여 드러낸다는 점에서 선정되었다. 본 연구에서는 특히 집단과 개인의 관계, 여가 시간과 노동 시간을 분리하는 양태와 비언어적 의사소통의 양식 등이 프랑스와 한국 문화의 특성에 따라 술 모임에서 어떻게 다르게 드러나는지 분석하면서 한국 대학의 프랑스어 문화교육을 위한 새로운 방향을 모색하였다.

자극원에 따른 보라성게(Heliocodaris crassispina)의 이동패턴 분석 (The Behavioral Response of Purple Sea Urchins Heliocodaris crassispina to Food and an Electrical Stimulus)

  • Sea urchins are hugely destructive of marine forest ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the behavioral response of purple sea Urchins Heliocodaris crassispina to food and an electrical stimulus and to investigate the attraction radius of these stimuli, with an eye to the development of technology for controlling sea urchin numbers. Ten purple sea urchins, housed in circular acrylic tank, were tested against various attractant stimuli. In addition, an experiment was conducted with 200 purple sea urchins in a large water tank to observe movement patterns and the attractiveness of various stimuli. In the smaller experiment, eight out of 10 sea urchins were attracted to food, and these attractive effects were maintained in all except one of the affected urchins. However, the attractant effects of the electrical stimulus were maintained in only three sea urchins. The results of the larger experiment indicated that differences in the attractant power of food and an electrical stimulus were 54%-78%, and approximately 5-15% of sea urchins were attracted by the electrical stimulus.

QR코드 및 스마트 글라스 활용 개인 정보 보호 블록체인 택배 시스템 (The Blockchain Delivery System for Secure Privacy with QR Code and Smart Glasses)

  • 개인정보 보호의 중요성이 어느 때보다 주목을 받고 있다. 그러나 택배 시스템은 이러한 개인정보 보호에 대한 움직임을 아직 따라가지 못하고 있다. 택배 상자에는 수취인에 대한 개인정보가 적혀있는 운송장이 붙어있어 누구나 손쉽게 개인 정보를 탈취해 갈 수 있다. 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위해 본 논문에서는 운송장의 내용을 사람이 눈으로 읽고 접근할 수 있는 글자가 아닌 QR 코드로 대처할 것을 제안한다. 또한 해당 QR 코드의 내용에 대한 무분별한 접근을 방지하기 위해 해당 내용에 대한 접근은 택배 블록체인 네트워크에 등록된 스마트 글라스만을 사용하여 접근할 수 있게 한다. 마지막으로 접근 가능한 스마트 글라스를 보유한 사람으로부터 해당 내용이 유출되는 것을 방지하기 위해 해당 접근 기록을 블록체인에 기록할 것을 제안한다.

영상 인식 및 생체 신호를 이용한 운전자 졸음 감지 시스템 (Driver Drowsiness Detection System using Image Recognition and Bio-signals)

  • 매년 교통사고의 가장 큰 원인으로 손꼽히는 졸음운전은 운전자의 수면 부족, 산소 부족, 긴장감의 저하, 신체의 피로 등과 같은 다양한 요인을 동반한다. 졸음 유무를 확인하는 일반적인 방법으로 운전자의 표정과 주행패턴을 파악하는 방법, 심전도, 산소포화도, 뇌파와 같은 생체신호를 분석하는 방법들이 연구되고 있다. 본 논문은 영상을 검출하는 딥러닝 모델과 생체 신호 측정 기술을 이용한 운전자 피로 감지 시스템을 제안한다. 제안 방법은 일차적으로 딥러닝을 이용하여 운전자의 눈 모양과 하품 유무, 졸음으로 예상되는 신체 동작을 파악하여 졸음 상태를 감지한다. 이차적으로 맥파 신호와 체온을 이용하여 운전자의 피로 상태를 파악하여 시스템의 정확도를 높이도록 설계하였다. 실험 결과, 실시간 영상에서 운전자의 졸음 유무 판별이 안정적으로 가능하였으며 각성상태와 졸음 상태에서의 분당 심박수와 체온을 비교하여 본 연구의 타당성을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Objectives: This study examined the case of a 69-year-old man with a history of stroke and Alzheimer's disease who had been diagnosed with probable-rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (probable-RBD). Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine (Ukgan-san, Ukgansangayonggolmoryeo-tang, and powdered Gamisoyo-san extract), Western medicine (clonazepam, antiplatelet, psychotropic agents, antihypertensive drugs, and others), and acupuncture. Their effects were evaluated by the frequency and severity of sleep-related behavioral symptoms. Results: After treatment, the observed frequency and severity of sleep-related behavior decreased. Conclusion: The results suggest that using traditional Korean medicine with clonazepam can be effective in the treatment of patients with probable-RBD.

Comparison between Subjective Scoring and Computer-Based Asymmetry Assessment in Facial Nerve Palsy

  • Background and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of a PC-based facial asymmetry assessment program (PC-FAAP) and to compare the results of PC-FAAP with subjective regional scoring by raters in acute unilateral peripheral facial nerve paralysis (FNP). Subjects and Methods: Participants were divided into 3 groups with 8 participants per group: group I, normal; group II, mild to moderate FNP; and group III, severe FNP. Using the PC-FAAP, the mouth asymmetry ratio (MAR), eyebrow asymmetry ratio (EAR), and complete eye closure asymmetry ratio (CAR) were calculated by comparing the movement of tracking points on both sides. The FNP grading scale (FGS) integrated each score, and the scores were weighted with a ratio of 5:3:2 (MAR:CAR:EAR). Subjective regional scoring was measured on a 0-100 scale score by three otologists. PC-FAAP and subjective scoring were compared in each group regarding the consistency of the results. Results: The mean scores of the MAR, EAR, CAR, and FGS of each group were significantly different. PC-FAAP showed significant differences between the three groups in terms of MAR, EAC, CAR, and FGS. PC-FAAP showed more consistent results than subjective assessment (p<0.001). The PC-FAAP was significantly more consistent in group I and group III (p<0.001 and p=0.002, respectively). FGS in group III was the only parameter that showed a more consistent result in PC-FAAP than the subjective scoring (p=0.008). Conclusions: An FNP grading system using a PC-based program may provide more consistent results, especially for severe forms.

급성 원발성 교뇌 출혈 환자의 하나반증후군, 현기증, 이상감각에 대한 한양방 협진치료 : 증례보고 (A Case Report of Acute Primary Pontine Hemorrhage with One-and-a-Half Syndrome, Vertigo, and Paresthesia Treated with Eastern-Western Integrative Medicine)

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to report the improvement of a patient with one-and-a-half syndrome, vertigo, and paresthesia caused by acute primary pontine hemorrhage (PPH) after a combination treatment of traditional Korean and Western medicine. Case report: A 51-year-old female with one-and-a-half syndrome, vertigo, and paresthesia after PPH was treated with Korean medicine, including herbal medication, acupuncture, and moxibustion, and Western medicine, including medication and rehabilitation therapy during hospitalization. Her progress was evaluated by checking for changes in symptoms with the extraocular muscle (EOM) function test, numeral rating scale (NRS), and follow-up brain computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). After 41 days of treatment, the EOM movement was improved, leaving limited abduction of the left eye. The NRS scores for vertigo and paresthesia decreased from 10 to 5 and from 10 to 3, respectively. Improvement was noted in hematoma in MRI, but a new ischemic lesion was also discovered. Conclusion: This case reports the clinical course of one-and-a-half syndrome and suggests that a combined therapy of traditional Korean and Western medicine can be useful for PPH patients with one-and-a-half syndrome, vertigo, and paresthesia. However, studies of larger populations are required.

현대적인 관점인 내장계와 체벽계로 바라본 영기(營氣)와 위기(衛氣)에 대한 연구 (A study of Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) from the modern perspective of Visceral body and Somatic body)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to modernize Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) from the point of view of Visceral Body and Somatic Body. Methods: Investigate the areas of body and function of Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) recorded in the 『HuangdiNeijing(黃帝內經)』 and 『Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)』. And investigate Visceral Body and Somatic Body that anatomical structure is divided according to function based on the book 『Life and Rhythm』. Results: Nutrient Qi(營氣) works to nourish the body such as viscera and bowels in the meridian. Defense Qi(衛氣) works to protect the body such as skin, limb joint, eye outside the meridian. The human body is divided into Visceral Body called a vegetable organ and Somatic Body called an animal organ. Visceral body is the organ that manages "nutrition-reproductive" and is divided into the intestine(腸管), blood vessels(血管), and the nephridium(腎管). Somatic Body is an organ that manages 'sensory-motion' and is divided into a three-layer structure: the outer layer covering the body surface, the nerve layer connecting the outer layer and the muscle layer, and the muscle layer controling contraction and movement. Conclusions: It is estimated that Nutrient Qi(營氣) is similar to Visceral Body, and Defense Qi(衛氣) is similar to Somatic Body.
