An Observation System of Hemisphere Space with Fish eye Image and Head Motion Detector

  • This paper presents a new observation system which is useful to observe the scene of the remote controlled robot vision. This system is composed of a motionless camera and head motion detector with a motion sensor. The motionless camera has a fish eye lens and is for observing a hemisphere space. The head motion detector has a motion sensor is for defining an arbitrary subspace of the hemisphere space from fish eye lens. Thus processing the angular information from the motion sensor appropriately, the direction of face is estimated. However, since the fisheye image is distorted, it is unclear image. The partial domain of a fish eye image is selected by head motion, and this is converted to perspective image. However, since this conversion enlarges the original image spatially and is based on discrete data, crevice is generated in the converted image. To solve this problem, interpolation based on an intensity of the image is performed for the crevice in the converted image (space problem). This paper provides the experimental results of the proposed observation system with the head motion detector and perspective image conversion using the proposed conversion and interpolation methods, and the adequacy and improving point of the proposed techniques are discussed.

  • The purpose of this work is to identify the characteristic of eye movement for visual training of the elderly. This investigation is to examine the relationship between the head and the eye motor system for the localization of visual target direction in three-dimensional space. All experiments were performed in a soundproof chamber. Twenty-one red LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode, Brightness: 20cd/$m^2$) arrayed in three lines on a half circle-surrounding panel are used. LEDs are horizontally 30 degree apart and vertically 20 degree apart from each other. The condition of stimulation is random and anti-saccade. Physiological parameter such as EOG (Electro-Oculography) was measured by BIOPAC system. We measure the mean latency time, which is the time from the start of visual stimulation to the response of the human body. The result shows that the mean latency time is short in the case of the condition of anti-saccade, the fixed head and a quarter visual stimulation. This finding can be used in developing programs for various visual improvements for the elderly by analyzing the characteristic of eye movement.

  • Recently, service area has been emerging field f robotic applications. Even though assistant robots play an important role for the disabled and the elderly, they still suffer from operating the robots using conventional interface devices such as joysticks or keyboards. In this paper we propose an efficient computer interface using real-time eye-gaze tracking system. The inputs to the proposed system are images taken by a camera and data from a magnetic sensor. The measured data is sufficient to describe the eye and head movement because the camera and the receiver of a magnetic sensor are stationary with respect to the head. So the proposed system can obtain the eye-gaze direction in spite of head movement as long as the distance between the system and the transmitter of a magnetic position sensor is within 2m. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed system in practical aspect and also verify the feasibility of the system as a new computer interface for the disabled.

  • Facial nerve palsy has an effect on a person's well-being functionally and psychologically. Therefore, comprehensive patient management is essential. One of the most common uncomfortable and potentially debilitating features is associated with the incapacity for eye closure. Restoration of eye closure is a key consideration during the surgical management of facial palsy. In this article, we introduce simple surgical methods-which are relatively easy to learn and involve the upper and lower eyelids-for achieving eye closure. Correcting upper eyelid function involves facilitating the component of eye closure that is in the same direction as gravity and is, therefore, less complicated and favorable outcomes than correction of lower lid. Aesthetic aspects should be considered to correct the asymmetry caused by facial palsy. Lower eyelid function involves a force that opposes gravity for eye closure, which makes correction of lower eyelid ectropion more challenging than surgery for the upper eyelid, particularly in terms of effecting a sustained correction. Initially, proper ophthalmic evaluation is required, including identifying the chronicity and severity of ectropion. Also, it is important to determine whether or not lateral canthoplasty is necessary. The lateral tarsal strip procedure is commonly used for lower lid correction. However, effective lower lid correction can be achieved with better cosmesis when extensive supporting techniques are applied, including those involving cheek tissue.

  • This paper deals with human spatial cognition using visual and auditory stimulation. More specially, this investigation is to observe the relationship between the head and the eye motor system for the localization of visual target direction in space and to try to describe what is the role of right-side versus left-side pinna. In the experiment of visual stimulation, nineteen red LEDs (Luminescent Diodes, Brightness: $210\;cd/^2$) arrayed in the horizontal plane of the surrounding panel are used. Here the LEDs are located 10 degrees apart from each other. Physiological parameters such as EOG (Electro-Oculography), head movement, and their synergic control are measured by BIOPAC system and 3SPACE FASTRAK. In the experiment of auditory stimulation, one side of the pinna function was distorted intentionally by inserting a short tube in the ear canal. The localization error caused by right and left side pinna distortion was investigated as well. Since a laser pointer showed much less error (0.5%) in localizing target position than FASTRAK (30%) that has been generally used, a laser pointer was used for the pointing task. It was found that harmonic components were not essential for auditory target localization. However, non-harmonic nearby frequency components was found to be more important in localizing the target direction of sound. We have found that the right pinna carries out one of the most important functions in localizing target direction and pure tone with only one frequency component is confusing to be localized. It was also found that the latency time is shorter in self moved tracking (SMT) than eye alone tracking (EAT) and eye hand tracking (EHT). These results can be used in further study on the characterization of human spatial cognition.

Epicanthoplasty Using Modified Uchida Method to Shift an Epicanthal Fold in a Superomedial Direction (눈구석주름의 내상방 이동을 위한 변형 Uchida 눈구석주름성형술)

  • Purpose: The presence of epicanthal fold and the absence of supratarsal fold are characteristics of Korean eyelids. There has been many surgical procedures to eliminate medial epicanthal fold but those procedures focus on the lengthening of horizontal palpebral fissure and the shortening of intercanthal distance so that the shape of eye had tendency to be sharp. The authors suggest that the supermedial shifting of epicanthal fold enhance the aesthetic result. Methods: From Sep 2006 to May 2007, total 17 women(mean age 22) with Type III epicanthal fold underwent epicanthoplasty using author's modified Uchida method. The design for epicanthoplasty was drawn superolaterally along epicanthal fold and split V-W plasty was done to shift the epicanthal fold superomedially. Also non-incisional double-eyelid operation was underwent. Results: The epicanthal fold was shifted in superomedially, intercanthal distance was shortened and double-eyelid was achieved. The patients were satisfied with the result and no major complication was noted. Conclusion: This method can be effective in correcting the epicanthal fold of Korean eyelid by shifting the epicanthal fold superomedially to make the shape of eye aesthetically without noticeable scar.

  • This paper deals with the experiments of optokinetic differentiation within eye tracking test through the menu direction and cognitive degree of service menu title for watching digital media service. Researcher establish a research topic which verification of differentiations of eye tracking velocity when media user perceive the service menu title within vertical structure or horizontal structure. Experimentation was designed with two types of menu structure-vertical or horizontal-and these have each 9 cases of eye tracking tasks for experimentee. Researcher arrives at a conclusion through as stated above experiment that cases of vertical menu structure is more effective method with linear channel service menu, otherwise that cases of horizontal menu structure is more effective method with non linear channel service menu, like a video on demand service. The research results will be very helpful with actual media industry players when they planning the evolutionary direction of their menu layout.

  • In this paper, we propose the method of manipulating the gaze direction of 3D FPS game's character by using eye gaze detection from the successive images captured by USB camera, which is attached beneath HMD. The proposed method is composed of 3 parts. In the first fart, we detect user's pupil center by real-time image processing algorithm from the successive input images. In the second part of calibration, the geometric relationship is determined between the monitor gazing position and the detected eye position gazing at the monitor position. In the last fart, the final gaze position on the HMB monitor is tracked and the 3D view in game is control]ed by the gaze position based on the calibration information. Experimental results show that our method can be used for the handicapped game player who cannot use his (or her) hand. Also, it can increase the interest and immersion by synchronizing the gaze direction of game player and that of game character.

The Immediate Effects of Dynamic Stretching and Static Stretching Using a Wedge Board on the Balance Ability and Jump Function of Healthy Adult

  • Purpose: This study aims to measure the improvement of balanced ability and rapid response of 30 healthy adults by performing dynamic stretching, static stretching, and sargent jump. Methods: The sample 30 peoples without any musculoskeletal disease who volunteered to be the subject of the study. We measured all subjects on following metrics to evaluate the function and stability under the normal condition, with dynamic stretching (DS) group, static stretching (SS) group: vertical jump height and reaching distance Anterior, Posteromedial, Posterolateral and NO (Normal eye open), NC (Normal eye close), PO (Pillow with eye open), and PC (Pillow with close eye) were evaluated. All measures were analyzed using independent t-test and One-way repeated Anova. Results: There was a significant increase in SJH (Sargent jump) in both groups (p<0.05). In Y-balance test, there was a significant increase in both groups except for the ANT (Anterior) direction, and there was a significant increase only in the SS group in the ANT (Anterior) direction (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the DS group and the SS group (p>0.05). There was no significant improvement in ST (Stability Index) and WDI (Weight Distribution Index) in both groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Both DS and SS showed significant improvement in SJH and Y-balance tests, which are dynamic functions, but had no significant effect on static balance ability.
