Recently, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was given the status of an approved form of psychotherapy for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. However, its effectiveness in the treatment of other anxiety disorders such as phobia is yet to be determined given that controlled studies have provided mixed results. This report summarizes the case of a child with a specific phobia (i.e. nighttime fear) which was successfully treated with two sessions of EMDR. This result suggests the further and thorough evaluation of this technique for use in childhood phobic disorders.
The ultimate purpose of eye movement is to maintain clear vision by ensuring that images of observed objects are focused on the fovea in the retina. Accurate evaluation of ocular movements, including nystagmus and saccadic intrusions, provides very useful information for determining the overall function and abnormality of the complex oculomotor system, from the peripheral vestibular system to the cerebrum. Eye movement tests are therefore essential for the accurate diagnosis of patients who complain of dizziness and imbalance. They help to predict lesion locations from the peripheral vestibular system to the central cerebral cortex and play an important role in differentiation from other diseases. The methodology of recording and interpreting ocular movements using video-oculography are described in this review article.
This study is to investigate how do elementary students' eye movements appear in cognitive process that they perceive science learning materials depending on motivation system of science learning. For this study we had a random sampling of 301, 6th grade students. And we had selected 32 students through the three tests for the final; motivation system test of science learning, a learning styles test, an Edinburgh inventory for handedness test. We were analysis the cognitive process during learning tasks for the selected student using eye-tracking equipment. The results of the research are as follows: First, when students see a science learning material, we found out that SL-BAS group that has tendency searched various areas than SL-BIS group in learning task. Second, results confirmed through the data of integrational count that students looked alternately texts, images and graphs in the learning material, SL-BIS group were more than SL-BAS group on integrated count, but they had a simple and insignificant eye movement. Especially SL-BAS students showed that integrated eye movement between texts, images and graphs in the learning material, and they explored important areas of the graph compared with SL-BIS group that there was no eye movement in graph. These results may be utilized as a useful resource for designing students' learning.
Purpose: This study is to identify how eye movement influences the static balance and fall efficacy of the elderly who have experienced fall-related injuries. Methods: Thirty nine elderly who scored 24 points in the Korean mini mental state examination, were able to walk, and had no specific disease, were selected as the research subjects among elderly who have experienced fall-related injury more than once in the past year. Thus, 20 for the experimental group, and 19 for the control group were selected as subjects. The experiment was conducted for 6 weeks, including periods of evaluation before and after intervention. Results: The results with respect to the dependent variables are as follows: Substitute sample t-testing showed significant differences between each group in eye movement to check difference in balance performance and fall efficacy. When independent sample t-tests were conducted to compare static balancing performance and fall efficacy between the two groups after intervention, they showed significant differences in statistical terms (p<0.05). Conclusion: From the above results of the study, it was found that the application of eye movement combined with diverse fall prevention programs is effective, when enhancing static balance performance power and improving fall efficacy.
Neuro-ophthalmological findings are common and occasionally prominent features in movement disorders. Accordingly, careful evaluation of the ocular motor functions may provide valuable information in early detection of the diseases and monitoring of the progression. Furthermore, accurate assessment of the abnormal ocular motor findings aids in understanding the pathophysiology and mechanisms of the movement disorders, and in their differential diagnosis. Ocular motility examination should include bedside evaluation and laboratory recording of the fixational abnormalities, saccades, smooth pursuit, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, optokinetic nystagmus, and vergence eye movements. In this review, we will discuss various ocular motor findings in ataxia and parkinsonian syndromes, and hyperkinetic movement disorders.

This study aims to investigate the gaze patterns of two expert and two novice teachers in one hour of lecture type class. Teachers recruited from the same middle school conducted the class each, wearing an eye-tracker. Gaze rate and gaze movement pattern were analyzed. The scene where teachers faced in the classroom was categorized into three zones; student zone, material zone, and non-teaching zone. Student zone was divided into nine areas of interest to see the gaze distribution within the student zone. Expert teachers showed focused gaze on student zone while novice teachers' gaze rate was significantly higher at the non-teaching zone, compared to expert teachers' one. Within student zone, expert teachers' gaze spread to the rear areas, but novice teachers' one was narrowly resided in the middle areas of the student zone. This difference in gaze caused different eye movement pattern: experts' T pattern and novices' I pattern. On the other hand, both teacher groups showed the least gaze rate onto the left and right front areas. Which change is required to teachers' gaze behavior and what must be considered in order to make effective teacher gaze in the classroom setting were discussed.
There are many display panels in the flight cockpit and pilots get various flight information from those displays. The ergonomic layout of the displays must be determined based upon frequency of use and sequence of use. This study investigated the visual search patterns of the six display groups(one head-up-display: HUD, two multi function displays: MFDs, one engine group: EG, one flight display group: FD and others) in a fighting aircraft. Four expert pilots conducted Imaginary flight in the physical mock-up and the eye movements were collected using eye tracking system. Data of dwell time, frequency of use, and eye movement path were collected. Pilots spent most of time on HUD(55.2%), and others (21.6%), FD(14.2%), right MFD(4.7%), EG(3.2%), and left MFD(1.1%) in descending order. Similarly HUD(42.8%) and others(30.0%) were the most frequently visited displays. These data can be used in the layout of cockpit displays and the determination of optimal visual search pattern.
Background: A number of studies have identified the effect of Korean medicine treatment for oculomotor nerve palsy, but few have reported treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage. This paper reports two cases of oculomotor nerve palsy with ptosis and limitation of eye movement after subarachnoid hemorrhage whose conditions were improved by Korean medicine treatment. Methods: Two patients with ptosis and limitation of eye movement after subarachnoid hemorrhage were treated with Korean medicine, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, and pharmacoacupuncture. Clinical symptoms were measured as the distance of the interpalpebral fissure and eyeball movement (adduction, abduction). Results: After treatment, their clinical symptoms showed improvement. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment, including pharmacoacupuncture and electroacupuncture, could be adopted as a treatment method for oculomotor nerve palsy after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The aim of this report is to describe improved symptom changes in eye movement disorders and dizziness of a patient with Miller Fisher syndrome after receiving combined Korean medicine treatment (CKMT). A 24-year-old male was diagnosed with MFS accompanied by eye movement disorder, diplopia, and dizziness. For 6 weeks, the patient received acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, and physical therapy treatment. Visual analogue scale were checked and other outcomes (the range of eye movement, the distance that diplopia appears, diplopia questionnaire) were measured. Following CKMT, the movement of both eyes improved in both the horizontal and vertical direction. Also for diplopia and dizziness, there was a decrease in the visual analogue scale and the distance that diplopia appeared. The present case report suggests that CKMT may have a role in treating eye movement disorders and dizziness in patient diagnosed with MFS.
