  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatments on allergic contact dermatitis aggravated after applying steroid ointment. Methods : We treated a 63-year-old woman with allergic contact dermatitis on the both forearm, jaw, neck, chest with Korean medicine. Before Korean medicine treatments she has taken oral steroids and applied steroid ointment for several years to treat dermatitis, but long-tern steroid therapy aggravated her symptoms like skin pruritus, erythema, exudates or edema. After Korean medical treatment for 27 days, we found that the size of erythema was reduced, and symptoms like pruritus, exudates and edema were lost. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results & Conclusions : The symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis were improved. Erythema, edema, exudate were lost. Thus Korean medicine treatments are effective on allergic contact dermatitis and could be a great alternative to steroid treatment.

  • Four 5 month old calves were died after showing respiratory distress after long-distance transportation at winter season. They were diagnosed as fibrinous lobar pneumonia caused by Mannheimia (M.) haemolytica. Grossly, lungs were attached onto the pleura by fibrin, with a rich yellowish fluid in thorax. The cut surface of the lung was showed marbled pattern of the reddish or greyish consolidation and widened interlobular septa by fibrin deposition. Histopathologically, parenchymal necrosis was delineated by a band of the degenerated inflammatory cells, and distended interlobular septa with serofibrinous exudates and vascular thrombosis with alveolar capillaries degeneration and abundant serofibrinous exudates in alveoli. M. hemolytica were isolated from all calves, and bovine viral diarrhea virus and parainfluenza type 3 virus in one calf were detected by RT-PCR. Thus, it was concluded that this case was diagnosed as pneumonic mannheimiosis suggested by complex infection with viruses after long-distance transportation and coldness.

  • We investigated the effect of Pb uptake by Pinus densiflora and the Pb fraction in forest soil. We also investigated the change in soil physicochemical characteristics, microbial activity, and root exudates of Pinus densiflora in Pb-contaminated soils. Three-year-old pine seedlings were exposed to 500 mg/kg Pb for 12 months. The metal fractions were measured using sequential extraction procedures. Additionally, factors that affect solubility (three soil enzyme activities and amino acids of root exudate compounds) were also determined. The results showed that Pb contamination significantly decreased enzyme activities due to soil characteristics. In addition, organic matter, nitrate content, and Pb concentration were time dependent. The results indicate that changes in the Pb fraction affected Pb uptake by pine trees due to an increase in the exchangeable Pb fraction. The concentrations of organic acids were higher in Pb-spiked soil than those in control soil. Higher rhizosphere concentrations of oxalic acid resulted in increased Pb uptake from the soil. These results suggest that pine trees can change soil properties using root exudates due to differences in the metal fraction.

  • Pseudomonas aerusinosa infection was diagnosed in broiler chicks, and was submitted to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service in Korea. The total mortality rate was about 1,500 birds out of 22,000 broilers. Clinically, affected birds showed clinical signs including depression and anorexia with lameness and trembling of the leg. At necropsy, the dead broilers appeared to have omphalitis, yolk sac infection, fibrinous epicarditis, and fibrinous exudates in liver with swollen hock joint. Microscopically, there were multiple necrotic foci in the liver, fibrinous exudates in the heart, and infiltration of heterophils into the joint spaces of the hock joint. Pseudomonas aerusinosa was isolated from the heart, liver and hock joint, and the isolate was named P-200. In effort to estimate the virulence of P-200, 1-day-old chicks were challenged intramuscularly and intrayolksacally with the isolate. On the basis of mortality rate, the isolate P-200 was found to be highly virulent. This is the first report of an occurrence of Pseudomonas aerusinosa infection in broilers in Korea.

  • Airborne pollutants in the subway facilities can be potentially harmful to the health of passengers. This study was designed to examine whether the suspended particulates have mutagenic or carcinogenic effect on the plant cell systems. Total suspended particulates were collected with a high volume air sampler, in the entrance, the waiting room, and the platform of each subway station. The biological end -points in this experiment were the pink mutations in stamen hairs and micronuclei in the pollen mother cells of Tradescantia. The exudates were collected by shaking the filter papers from the sampler in distilled water for 24 hours. All the plant cuttings exposed to the exudates resulted in positive responses. The micronucleus assay proved more reliable and sensitive to the test than the stamen hair assay. The results indicate that the air particulates can give an adverse effect on the health of subway passengers.

  • Background : The established by Light et al in 1972 have been used widely for the differential diagnosis of the pleural effusions in transudates and exsudates. However, in recent years, several reports have agreed that these criteria misclassified an important number of effusions. For this reason, different parameters have been proposed for differentiating the transudates from exudates. Nevertheless, all these alternative parameters have not been better than the past criteria of Light et al. In response the usefulness of two parameters for differentiating pleural transudate from exudates were evaluated : pleural fluid cholinesterase level and pleural fluid to serum cholinesterase ratio. Methods : A total of forty-three patients with known causes of the pleural of the pleural effusion by diagnostic thoracentesis were studied. The following criteria for differentiating the pleural effusions in transudates and exsudates were analyzed : Ligt's criteria, the pleural fluid cholesterol level, the pleural fluid to serum cholesterol ratio, the pleural fluid cholinesterase level, and the pleural fluid to serum cholinesterase ratio. Results : The conditions of forty-three patients were diagnosed. Ten were classified as having transudates and thirty-three as exudates. The percentage of effusions misclassified by each parameter was as follows : Light's criteria, 9.3% ; pleural fluid cholesterol 2.3% ; pleural fluid to serum cholesterol, ratio, 2.3% ; pleural fluid cholinesterase, 4.7% ; and pleural fluid to serum chlinesterase ratio, 2.3%. Conclusions : The pleural fluid to serum cholinesterase ratio is one of the accurate criteria for differentiating pleural transudates from exudates. If fur1her studies confirm the results, the cholinesterase ratio could be used as the first step in the evaluation of pleural effusion and, if evaluated together with the other criteria, the differentiation of pleural transudate from exsudates will become more accurate.

  • Background : Pleural effusions are generally divided into transudates and exudates. If it is exudative, more diagnostic tests are required in order to determine the cause of the local disease. A malignancy is a common and important cause of exudative pleural effusions. Because the pleural fluid cytology and pleural biopsy specimens do not provide a diagnosis in a high percentage of malignant effusions, several tumor markers have been examined. In order to overcome this limitation, this study hypothesized that C-reactive protein(CRP) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) measurements would be useful for differentiating trasudates from exudates and determining the differences between a benign and malignant effusion. Methods : Eighty consecutive patients with a pleural effusion (tuberculous 20, parapneumonic 20, malignant 20, transudative 20) were examined prospectively: 60 of them were classified according to Light's criteria as having an exudative fluid and 20 had a transudative fluid. The standard parameters of a pleural effusion were examined and the serum and pleural effusion VEGF levels were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). CRP in the serum and pleural fluid was determined by a turbidimetric immunoassay. Results : The pleural CRP levels in the exudates were significantly higher than those in the transudates, $4.19{\pm}4.22mg/d{\ell}$ and $1.29{\pm}1.45mg/d{\ell}$, respectively. The VEGF levels in the pleural effusions were significantly elevated in the exudates compared to the transudate, $1,011{\pm}1,055pg/m{\ell}$ and $389{\pm}325pg/m{\ell}$, respectively. The VEGF ratio in the exudative effusion is significantly higher than a transudative effusions, $3.9{\pm}4.7$ and $1.6{\pm}0.9$, respectively. The pleural CRP levels in the patients with a benign effusion($4.15{\pm}4.20mg/d{\ell}$) were significantly higher than those in the malignant effusion($1.43{\pm}1.91mg/d{\ell}$). The VEGF ratio is significantly higher in malignant effusions($4.9{\pm}5.5$) than in benign effusions($2.8{\pm}3.6$). Conclusion : In conclusion, the CRP and VEGF levels in the serum and pleural effusion can distinguish between transudates and exudates. Moreover it can differentiate between benign and malignant pleural effusions.

  • Accumulation of Pseudomonas sp., P. fluorescens and Erwinia carotovora in 60 min treatment was greater in extracts from soil, exudate from ginseng root and solutions than distilled water. In bacterial movement toward rubber tube soil from chamber, accumulation of P. fluorescens in response to soil supplemented with soil extracts, exudate and solutions was generally greater in soil extracts compared to control and other solutions, but Pseudomonas sp. and E. carotovora were not much response to supplemented extracts, exudate and solutions. Accumulation of the bacteria in capillaries containing various exudates from fungal propagules with not attracted to the exudates. For an accumulation of bacteria in rubber tubes containing soil inoculated with fungal propagules, the Pseudomonas sp. was not attracted in soil inoculated by the organisms as attractant but P. fluorescens and E. carotovora to fungi were attracted to F. solani, F. oxysporum and mixed organism Alternaria panax did not affect on bacterial movement except E. carotovora. The organic matter conten in Kangwha and Kimpo soil were low in diseased and healthy soil. The K content was especially high in Kimpo healthy soil. Bacterial population in Goesan and Kangwha were more abundant than other soil. The number actinomycetes was populated abundant in healthy soil of Goesan and diseased soil of Poonggi.

  • The spermagonial state of Cronartium ribicola J. C. Fisher appeared on the discolored bark of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. & Zucc.) from late August through middle of October in Korea. A large number of ellipsoid or ovoid spermatia were contained in the spermagonial exudates that appeared on the bark of infected trees. In the spring (April-May) following the appearance of spermagonia, aecia broke through that part of the bark which had been occupied by spermagonia the year before.
