Design of Hot Extrusion Dies for Hexagonal Insert (Hexagonal 인서트용 열간압출 금형설계)

  • The use of hexagonal ceramic inserts for copper extrusion dies offers significant technical and economic advantages over other forms of manufacture. In this paper the data on the loading of the tools is determined from a commercial FEM package as the contact stress distribution on the die-workpiece interface and as temperature distributions in the die. This data can be processed as load input data for a finite element die-stress analysis. Process simulation and stress analysis are thus combined during the design, and a data exchange program has been developed that enables optimal design of the dies taking into account the elastic deflections generated in shrink fitting the die inserts and that caused by the stresses generated in the process. The stress analysis of the dies is used to determine the stress conditions on the ceramic insert by considering contact and interference effects under both mechanical and thermal loads.

  • In the cold forging, elastic deformation of the die has been investigated to improve the accuracy of cold forged parts with F.E.M analysis using DEFORM, and with experiments using strain gauges. In the experiments, initial billet was selected to easily find the effect of elastic deformation according to the forging modes, extrusion and upsetting type, and only extrusion type. Elastic deformation of the die can be obtained by the signal from the strain gauges and this signal can be amplified by data acquisition system during the process. In the F.E.M analysis, two types of analysis are used to predict elastic strain of the die. To improve an accuracy of forged product and die dimension, this study compared with strain distribution between experiment and F.E.M analysis. As a result, the history of the deformation of the die and elastic recovery of forged product can be obtained by the elastic strain analysis of forged product and die according to the forging modes.

The Processing Technology of Soy Protein Meat Analog Using Twin-Screw Extruder - Heat Transfer Analysis of Cooling Die -

  • Soy protein meat analog was produced using a twin-screw extruder attached with a cooling die. Heat transfer analysis was performed for cooling dies with various die sizes at the four different moisture contents of feed during extrusion process. The experimental design consisted of two cooling die widths (30 and 60 mm), three cooling die lengths (100, 200, and 300 mm), four product moisture contents (71.2, 67.0, 61.6 and 55.8%), and water and water plus ethylene glycol as cooling material. When water was used as cooling medium, the values of equivalent overall heat transfer coefficient $(U_e)$ for each die width of 30 and 60 mm were in the range of 187.0 - 341.4 and $358.5-191.6W/m^2^{\circ}C$ depending on the size of die length. Convective heat transfer coefficients between cooling water and inside die wall of cooling channel $(h_c)$ for both die widths of 30 and 60 mm were 588.5, 416.1, and $339.8W/m^2^{\circ}C$ for each die length of 100, 200, and 300 mm. Convective heat transfer coefficients between product and inside die wall of product channel $(h_p)$ for each die width of 30 and 60 mm were in the range of $434.6-888.1W/m^2^{\circ}C$ and $460.7-1014.5W/m^2^{\circ}C$ depending on the size of die length. When water plus ethylene glycol was used as cooling medium, the values of $U_e$ were in the range of $143.9-319.6W/m^2^{\circ}C$ and $177.8-332.7W/m^2^{\circ}C$ for each die width of 30 and 60 mm depending on the size of die length.

Properties of Barley for Extrusion Processing (보리의 Extrusion 가공적성)

  • Using piston type extruder, barley flour was extruded at various processing conditions, The used variables were three shear rates (apparent shear rate 118, 534, $1169sec^{-1}$), four extrusion temperatures(90, 120, 150, $180^{\circ}C$) and three moisture contents (15, 25, 35%). The rheological properties and the extrudate quality were monitored in extrusion. Barley flour showed pseudoplastic behavior having average power law index 0.28 in used shear rate range. When viewed from general appearance, die swell, density, water uptake, rehydration swell and gelatinization degree of extrudate, $25{\sim}35%$ moisture and $120^{\circ}C$ temperature was suitable processing condition for noodle-like product, and 25% moisture and $150^{\circ}C$ temperature was good for snack or flake product. Moisture content of the extrudate can be pretty well estimated from energy balance at higher temperature and higher moisture content.

  • Extrusion characteristics of Mg alloys were studied experimentally. The Al-Zn-Mg alloys, AZ31, AZ6l, AZ80, and AZ91 were extruded with hot hydrostatic extrusion process. The hydrostatic process was efficient to reduce surface friction and extend steady state region in extrusion which made it more convenient to examine deformation behavior of the alloys avoiding the disturbance caused by temporary contact state between billet and die, and billet and container. High pressure was cooperative to expand forming limit of the alloys which were applied on the billet during the extrusion process. Extrusion limits were traced in temperature and extrusion speed domain with changing composition of the alloying elements. Effects of process parameters on extrusion load and microstructure evolution were investigated also.

  • In this paper, the workability of flange in the radial extrusion is analyzed in terms of the deformation pattern, the punch load and the forming limit by using simulation and experiment. A single action pressing is applied to both simulation and experiment. The analysis in this study is focused on the transient extrusion into the gap in radial direction with various gap heights and die corner radius. Based on the surface strains where surface cracking occurs, the forming patterns and strain-fracture relationships in producing radially extruded flange are obtained.

  • Square dies are widely used for hot extrusion processes with high production rate. However the design and manufacture of square dies mainly relies on experience of industrial engineers To overcome such difficulty this study develops a method of automatic generation of NC-codes for the manufacture of extrusion square dies. The result shows that the method can reduce the lead time for the design and manufacture of square dies as well as eliminating engineers ow experience.
