  • In this article, the megasonic cleaning system for cleaning micro/nano particles from flat panel display (FPD) surfaces was developed. A piezoelectric actuator and a waveguide were designed by finite element method (FEM) analysis. The calculated peak frequency value of the quartz waveguide was 1002 kHz, which agreed well with the measured value of 1003 kHz. The average acoustic pressure of the megasonic cleaning system was 43.1 kPa, which is three times greater than that of the conventional type of 13.9 kPa. Particle removal efficiency (PRE) tests were performed, and the cleaning efficiency of the developed system was proven to be 99%. The power consumption of the developed system was 64% lower than that of the commercial system. These results show that the developed megasonic cleaning system can be an effective solution in particle removing from FPD substrate with higher energy efficiency and lower chemical and ultra pure water (UPW) consumption.

  • The wave load and its influence on the response of offshore structure have been well investigated through the statistical approach based on the linear theory. The linear approach has a limitation to apply the extreme condition such as freak wave, which corresponds to extreme value of wave spectrum. The main topic of present study is to develop an efficient numerical method to predict wave load induced by extreme wave. As a numerical method, finite element method based on variational principle is adopted. The frequency-focusing method is applied to generate the extreme wave in the numerical wave tank. The wave load on the bottom mounted vertical cylinder is investigated. The hydroelastic response of the vertical cylinder is also investigated so as to compare the wave loads with the rigid body case in the extreme wave condition.

  • In statistical hydrology, various extreme distributions such as the generalized extreme value (GEV), generalized logistic (GLO) and Gumbel (GUM) models have been widely used to analyze the extreme events. In the case of rainfall events in South Korea, the GEV and Gumbel distributions are known to be appropriate among various extreme distribution models. However, the proper probability distribution model may be different depending on the type of extreme events, rainfall duration, region, and statistical characteristics of extreme events. In this regard, it is necessary to apply a wide range of statistical properties that can be represented by the distribution model because it has two shape parameters. In this study, the statistical applicability of rainfall data is analyzed using the Burr XII distribution and the dimensionless L-moment ratio for 620 stations in South Korea. For this purpose, L-skewness and L-kurtosis of the Burr XII distribution are derived and L-moment ratio diagram is drawn and then the applicability of 620 stations was analyzed. As a result, it is found that the Burr XII distribution for the stations of the Han River basin in which L-skewness is relatively larger than L-kurtosis is appropriate, It is possibility of replacing the distribution of commonly used Gumbel or GEV distributions. Therefore, the Burr XII model can be replaced as an appropriate probability model in this basin.

  • Rapid climate change and oceanic warming have increased the variability of oceanic wave heights over the past several decades. In addition, the extreme wave heights, such as the upper 1% (or 5%) wave heights, have increased more than the heights of the normal waves. This is true for waves both in global oceans as well as in local seas. Satellite altimeters have consistently observed significant wave heights (SWHs) since 1991, and sufficient SWH data have been accumulated to investigate 100-year return period SWH values based on statistical approaches. Satellite altimeter data were used to estimate the extreme SWHs at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) for the period from 2005 to 2016. Two representative extreme value analysis (EVA) methods, the Initial Distribution Method (IDM) and Peak over Threshold (PoT) analysis, were applied for SWH measurements from satellite altimeter data and compared with the in situ measurements observed at the IORS. The 100-year return period SWH values estimated by IDM and PoT analysis using IORS measurements were 8.17 and 14.11 m, respectively, and those using satellite altimeter data were 9.21 and 16.49 m, respectively. When compared with the maximum value, the IDM method tended to underestimate the extreme SWH. This result suggests that the extreme SWHs could be reasonably estimated by the PoT method better than by the IDM method. The superiority of the PoT method was supported by the results of the in situ measurements at the IORS, which is affected by typhoons with extreme SWH events. It was also confirmed that the stability of the extreme SWH estimated using the PoT method may decline with a decrease in the quantity of the altimeter data used. Furthermore, this study discusses potential limitations in estimating extreme SWHs using satellite altimeter data, and emphasizes the importance of SWH measurements from the IORS as reference data in the East China Sea to verify satellite altimeter data.

  • Extreme value theory concerns the distributional properties of the maximum of a random sample; subsequently, it has been significantly extended to stationary random sequences satisfying weak dependence restrictions. We focus on distributional mixing condition $D(u_n)$ and the Berman condition based on covariance among weak dependence restrictions. The former is assumed for general stationary sequences and the latter for stationary normal processes; however, both imply the same distributional limit of the maximum of the normal process. In this paper $D(u_n)$ condition is shown weaker than Berman's covariance condition. Examples are given where the Berman condition is satisfied but the distributional mixing is not.

  • This paper is an experimental study on the flexural strength and ductility capacity of reinforced high performance concrete beams with the concrete which has compressive strength of 600~700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, slump value of 20~25cm and slump-flow value of 60~70cm. Total 8 beams with different tensile reinforcement ratio and pattern of loading were tested. Form the results of reinforced high performance concrete beams, the equivalent stress block parameters proposed by MacGregor et al. or New Zealand code are recommended to use. Also, an extreme fiber concrete compressive strain of reinforced high performance concrete beams are distributed 0.0033~0.0048. In reinforced high performance concrete beams, reinforcement ratio in order to insure curvature ductility index 2 and 4 propose by ACI code should be less than those of reinforced normal strength concrete beams.

  • Seismic pounding between adjacent buildings with inadequate separation and different dynamic characteristics can cause severe damage to the colliding buildings. Efficient estimation of the maximum pounding force is required to control the extent of damage in adjacent structures or develop an appropriate mitigation method. In this paper, an analytical approach on the basis of statistical relations is presented for approximate computation of extreme value of pounding force between two adjacent structures with equal or unequal heights subjected to stationary and non-stationary excitations. The nonlinearity of adjacent structures is considered using Bouc-Wen model of hysteresis and the pounding effect is simulated by applying the nonlinear viscoelastic model. It is shown that the proposed approach can significantly save computational costs by obviating the need for performing dynamic analysis. To assess the reliability and accuracy of the proposed approach, the results are compared with those obtained from nonlinear dynamic analysis.

  • The Land Transport Authority of Singapore has a continuing program of highway bridge upgrading, to refurbish and strengthen bridges to allow for increasing vehicle traffic and increasing axle loads. One subject of this program has been a short span bridge taking a busy highway across a coastal inlet near a major port facility. Experiment-based structural assessments of the bridge were conducted before and after upgrading works including strengthening. Each assessment exercise comprised two separate components; a strain and acceleration monitoring exercise lasting approximately one month, and a full-scale dynamic test carried out in a single day. This paper reports the application of extreme value statistics to estimate bridge live loads using strain measurements.
