  • This work is concerned with various planar deformations of an isotropic sandwich beam, which generally consists of three layers: two stiff skin layers and one soft core layer. When one layer of the sandwich beam is modeled as a beam, the variational-asymptotic method is rigorously used to construct a zeroth-order beam model, which is similar to a generalized Timoshenko beam model capable of capturing the transverse shear deformations but still carries out the zeroth-order approximation. To analyze the planar sandwich beam, the sum of the energies of the two skin layers and one core layer is then formulated with different material and geometric properties and represented by a universal beam model in terms of the core-layer kinematics through interface displacement and stress continuity conditions. As a preliminary validation, two extreme examples are presented to demonstrate the capability and accuracy of this present approach.

  • In this paper we examine extremal behavior of a $textsc{k}$th-order stationary Markov chain {X\ulcorner} by considering excesses over a high level which typically appear in clusters. Excesses over a high level within a cluster define a cluster damage, i.e., a normalized sum of all excesses within a cluster, and all excesses define a damage point process. Under some distributional assumptions for {X\ulcorner}, we prove convergence in distribution of the cluster damage and obtain a representation for the limiting cluster damage distribution which is well suited for simulation. We also derive formulas for the mean and the variance of the limiting cluster damage distribution. These results guarantee a compound Poisson limit for the damage point process, provided that it is strongly mixing.

  • In this paper, we developed the hydroforming simulator which can apply an axial compressive force and high internal pressure to bulge a tube. Experimental dtudies have been performed to investigate the effect of each parameters such as internal pressure and axial compression stroke required for the forming of circular components. Under the improper forming conditions there were two forming failures. One was the axial buckling due to excessive axial compressive load and the other was the circumferential necking fracture due to relatively high internal pressure. A safe forming zone without any failures exists between these two extreme zones. Also the condition of forming failure such as fracture is examined throughout the theoretical analysis. This paper covers a brief overview of the mechanism of hydroforming process as well as the design of die and tools.

  • It's important to measure quantitative properties about thermal-nano variation conduct of polymer for producing high quality components using NIL process. NanoScale indents can be used ad cells for molecular electronics and drug deliver, slots for integration into nanodevices, and defects for tailoring the structure and properties. In this study, it's to evaluate mechanical characteristic of polymer such as PMMA and PC at high temperature for manufacture of nano/micro size of polymer using indenter at high temperature. At high temperature mechanical properties of polymer have extreme variation. Because heating the polymer, it becomes softer than room temperature. In this case it is especially important to study for mechanical properties of polymer at high temperature.

  • This study analyzed automobile lower arm assembly structure and fatigue to identify configuration changes to enhance structural safety. Parts connected to the car body were fixed and 500 N load was applied at the lower arm head. Maximum equivalent stress and maximum total deformation were minimized for model 1 ( MPa and 0.10315 mm, respectively). Fatigue analysis using extreme SAE bracket history fatigue loads showed model 1 also improved fatigue life ($3.3693{\times}10^5cycles$). This study provides important inputs to improve lower arm durability by modifying the arm configuration.

  • Morphing is a geometric interpolation technique that is often used by the animation industry to transform one form into another seemingly seamlessly. It does this by producing a large number of 'intermediate' forms between the two 'extreme' or 'parent' forms. It has already been shown that morphing technique can be a powerful tool for form design and as such can be a useful addition to the armoury of product designers. Morphing procedure itself is simple and consists of straightforward linear interpolation. However, establishing the correspondence between vertices of the parent models is one of the most difficult and important tasks during a morphing process. This paper discusses the mesh-merging method employed for this process as against the already established mesh-regularising method. It has been found that the merging method minimises the need for manual manipulation, allowing automation to a large extent.

  • The objectives of this research are to verify the structural stability and estimate the resisting performance of Stressed-Arch system during the construction process. Full scale models are taken to obtain the objective shape by the Dynamic Relaxation Method. As a result, it measured more strain than yielding strain at the extreme fiber of top chord member on the crown, but it is shown that members have the sufficiently compressive resisting performance as well as a considerable strain recovery capacity under unloading. Therefore, it is confirmed that Stressed-Arch system apparently have sufficient range of the structural capacity, but it is required that the elasto-plastic behavior of this system must be verified more detailed by numerical analysis and experiments.

  • Several industrial applications such as space exploration, aerospace, automotive, the downhole oil and gas industry, and geothermal power plants require specific electronic systems under extremely high temperatures. For the majority of such applications, silicon-based technologies (bulk silicon, silicon-on-insulator) are limited by their maximum operating temperature. Silicon carbide (SiC) has been recognized as one of the prime candidates for providing the desired semiconductor in extremely high-temperature applications. In addition, it has become particularly interesting owing to a Si-compatible process technology for dedicated devices and integrated circuits. This paper briefly introduces a variety of SiC-based integrated circuits for use under extremely high temperatures and covers the technology trend of SiC CMOS devices and processes including the useful implementation of SiC ICs.

  • A high-hardness tool material is required to reduce extreme abrasive wear when drilling carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Single-crystal diamond is the hardest material in the world, but it is very expensive to be used as a cutting tool. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is a diamond grit fused at a high temperature and pressure, and diamond-like carbon (DLC) is an amorphous carbon with high hardness. This study compares DLC coatings and PCD inserts to conventional TiAlN-coated tungsten carbide drills. In fiberglass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer drilling, the tool wear of DLC-coated carbide was approximately half that of TiAlN-coated tools, and slight tool wear occurred in the case of PCD insert end drills.

  • Soil erosion due to climate change is one of the global environmental issues. Especially, Korea is vulnerable to soil erosion as the frequency of extreme rainfall events and rainfall intensity are increasing. Soil erosion causes various problems such as reduced farmlands, deterioration of water quality in rivers, etc. To these severe problems, understanding the process of soil erosion is the first process. Then, it is necessary to quantify and analyze soil ersoion using an erosion model. Soil erosion models are divided into empirical, conceptual, and physics-based models according to the structures and characteristics of models. This study used GSSHA (Gridded Surface Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis), the physics-based erosion model, running on WMS (Watershed Modeling System) to analyze soil erosion vulnerability of the CheonCheon watershed. In addition, we compared the six sediment transport capacity formulas provided in the model and evaluated the equations fir on this study site. Therefore, this result can be as a primary tool for soil conservation management.
