Recently, subspace analysis has raised its performance to a higher level through the adoption of kernel-based nonlinearity. Especially, the radial basis function, based on its nonparametric nature, has shown promising results in face recognition. However, due to the endemic small sample size problem of face data, the conventional kernel-based feature extraction methods have difficulty in data representation. In this paper, we introduce a novel variant of the RBF kernel to alleviate this problem. By adopting the concept of the nearest feature line classifier, we show both effectiveness and generalizability of the proposed method, particularly regarding the small sample size issue.
We proposed a system that can perform pattern recognition based on parrallel optical feature extraction and performed experiments on this. The feature to be extracted are both 6 simple line orientations and two eigenvectors of the covariance matrix of the patterns that cannot be distinguished with the line orientation features alone. Our system consists of a feature-extraction part and a pattern-recognition part. The former that extracts the features in parallel with the multiplexed Vander Lugt filters was implemented optically, while the latter that performs the pattern recognition by the use of the extracted features was implemented in a computer. In the pattern recognition part, two methods are tested;one is to use an artificial neural network, which is trained to recognize the features directly, the other is to count the numbers of specific features simply and then to compare them with the stored reference feature numbers. We report the preliminary experimental results tested for 15 alpabet patterns with only straight line segments.
Vulnerability assessment of power systems is important so as to determine their ability to continue to provide service in case of any unforeseen catastrophic contingency such as power system component failures, communication system failures, human operator error, and natural calamity. An approach towards the development of on-line power system vulnerability assessment is by means of using an artificial neural network(ANN), which is being used successfully in many areas of power systems because of its ability to handle the fusion of multiple sources of data and information. An important consideration when applying ANN in power system vulnerability assessment is the proper selection and dimension reduction of training features. This paper aims to investigate the effect of using various feature extraction methods on the performance of ANN as well as to evaluate and compare the efficiency of the proposed feature extraction method named as neural network weight extraction. For assessing vulnerability of power systems, a vulnerability index based on power system loss is used and considered as the ANN output. To illustrate the effectiveness of ANN considering various feature extraction methods for vulnerability assessment on a large sized power system, it is verified on the IEEE 300-bus test system.

Feature restoration is that restore feature to 3D solid model using the feature information in STEP AP224. Feature is very important in CAPP, but feature information is defined very complicated in STEP AP224. This paper recommends the algorithm of extraction the feature information in physical STEP AP224file. This program import STEP AP224 file, parse the geometric and topological information, the tolerance data, and feature information line-by-line. After importation and parsing, store data into database. Feature restoration module analyze database including feature information, extract feature information, e.g. feature type, feature's parameter, etc., analyze the relationship and then restore feature to 3D solid model.
In this paper, we are concerned with a 3D line segment extraction method by area-based stereo matching technique. The main idea is based on line fitting of elevation data on 2D line coordinates of ortho-image. Elevation data and ortho-image can be obtained by well-known area-based stereo matching technique. In order to use elevation in line fitting, the elevation itself should be reliable. To measure the reliability of elevation, in this paper, we employ the concept of self-consistency. We test the effectiveness of the proposed method with a quantitative accuracy analysis using synthetic images generated from Avenches data set of Ascona aerial images. Experimental results indicate that our method generates 3D line segments almost 7.5 times more accurate than raw elevations obtained by area-based method.

Recently, the wavelet transform has been a new and powerful tool for signal processing. It is more suitable specially for the feature extraction and detection of non-stationary signals than traditional methods such as, the Fourier Transform(FT), the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) and the Least Square Method etc. because of the characteristic of the multi-scale analysis and time-frequency domain localization. The wavelet transform has been developed for the analysis of PD pulse signal to raise in the progress of insulation degradation. In this paper, the wavelet transform was applied to one foundational method for feature extraction. For the obtain experimental data, a computer-aided partial discharge measurement system with a single acoustic sensor was used. If we are applying to the neural network method the accumulated data through the extracted feature, it is expected that we can detect the PD pulse signal in the insulation materials on the on-line.

A reliable extraction of welded area is the precedent task before the detection of weld defects in industrial radiography. This paper describes an attempt to detect and extract the welded features of steel tubes from the computed radiography(CR) images. The statistical properties are first analyzed on over 160 sample radiographic images which represent either weld or non-weld area to identify the differences between them. The analysis is then proceeded by pattern classification to determine the clustering parameters. These parameters are the width, the functional match, and continuity. The observed weld image is processed line by line to calculate these parameters for each flexible moving window in line image pixel set. The local statistic line-clustering method is used as the classifier to recognize each window data as weld or non-weld cluster. The sequential procedure is to track the edge lines between two distinct regions by iterative calculation of threshold, and it results in extracting the weld feature. Our methodology is concluded to be effective after experiment with CR weld images.
Text extraction and binarization are the important pre-processing steps for text recognition. The performance of text binarization strongly related to the accuracy of recognition stage. In our proposed method, the first stage based on line detection and shape feature analysis applied to locate the position of a business card and detect the shape from the complex environment. In the second stage, several local regions contained the possible text components are separated based on the projection histogram. In each local region, the pixels grouped into several connected components based on the connected component labeling and projection histogram. Then, classify each connect component into text region and reject the non-text region based on the feature information analysis such as size of connected component and stroke width estimation.

An effective do-blurring algorithm is proposed to remove the blur of the even and the odd line images of the interlaced scan type camera. n the object or the camera moves fast while the interlaced scan type digital camera is acquiring images, blur is often created due to the misalignment between two images of even and odd lines. In this paper, the blurred original image is separated into the even and the odd line images of the half size. Two full sized images are generated using interpolation technique based on these two in ages. Again, these images are signed and combined through the processes of feature extraction, matching, sub-pixel matching, outlier removal, and mosaicking. De-blurring simulations about the images of different camera motions have been done.
Computer security has become a critical issue with the rapid development of business and other transaction systems over the Internet. The application of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data mining techniques to intrusion detection systems has been increasing recently. But most research is focused on improving the classification performance of a classifier. Selecting important features from input data leads to simplification of the problem, and faster and more accurate detection rates. Thus selecting important features is an important issue in intrusion detection. Another issue in intrusion detection is that most of the intrusion detection systems are performed by off-line and it is not a suitable method for a real-time intrusion detection system. In this paper, we develop the real-time intrusion detection system, which combines an on-line feature extraction method with the Least Squares Support Vector Machine classifier. Applying the proposed system to KDD CUP 99 data, experimental results show that it has a remarkable feature extraction and classification performance compared to existing off-line intrusion detection systems.
