Design and Implementation of the RF Systems for Bi-directional Wireless Capsule Endoscopes

  • This paper explains that the RF systems for hi-directional wireless capsule endoscopes were designed and implemented. The designed RF systems for a capsule endoscope can transmit the images of intestines from the inside to the outside of a body and the behavior of the capsules can be controlled by an external controller simultaneously. The hi-directional wireless capsule endoscope consists of a CMOS image sensor, FPGA, LED, battery, DC to DC Converter, transmitter, receiver, and antennas. The transmitter and receiver which were used in the hi-directional capsule endoscope, were designed and fabricated with $10mm(diameter){\times}3.2mm(thickness)$ dimensions taking into the MPE, power consumption, system size, signal to noise ratio and modulation method. The RF systems designed and implemented for the hi-directional wireless capsule endoscopes system were verified by in-vivo experiments. As a result, the RF systems for the hi-directional wireless capsule endoscopes satisfied the design specifications.

A Study on Modified Average Filter using Standard Deviation of Local Mask in AWGN Environments (AWGN 환경에서 국부 마스크의 표준편차를 이용한 변형된 평균 필터에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, with the rapid demand expansion on the devices of digital image processing, the excellent quality of the images is required. However, the degradation of the images occurs in the processes of data acquisition, processing, and transmission by various external causes and the noise has been well known as the major cause of image degradation. There are a variety of noises to be added on the images, with typical example of AWGN. Hence, in this article, we suggested average filter algorithm processed by the threshold values using them applying standard deviation of local mask under the AWGN environment in this study. As the result of the simulation, The proposed algorithm shows a high PSNR of 24.56[dB] for Barbara images that had been damaged of AWGN(${\sigma}=15$), compared to the existing MF, CWMF and AWMF there were improvements by 3.34[dB], 2.57[dB], and 3.32[dB], respectively.

A Study of Supply Patterns and Residential Characteristics of Urban-type Housing in Seoul (도시형생활주택의 공급현황 및 거주특성 연구 - 서울시 공급사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigates supply patterns and residential characteristics of the Urban-type Housing in Seoul. There have been 3,336 buildings and 71,790 housing units approved until the end of 2012. One-room apartments and small units less than 30 $m^2$ of residential area amount to 81% and 82% of total units, respectively. Major findings are as follows. First, single- and two-person households less than 30 years of age are mostly lived in the housing. Respondents are mainly professional and white-collar (43%) and service and sales workers (27%). Most of them are mid-income classes (67%), which is twice more than that of single- and two-person households in Seoul. They pay 672 thousand won in rent more than average rent of mid-income class. The rent to income ratios are 29.9% for single households and 24.5% for two-person households, which are higher than that of mid-income bracket. Third, their satisfaction level is relatively high in internal environment and access to public service facilities, but not in external environment and community service facilities. They are satisfied with security and daylight, walking and safety, access to public transport and parking space, but not with noise and vibration, natural environment, access to park and cultural and sports facilities, and most community service facilities. It is necessary to reexamine the articles of deregulation and prepare design standards while considering different housing and locational types.

A Review of SERS for Biomaterials Analysis Using Metal Nanoparticles (바이오 물질 분석을 위한 금속 나노입자를 이용한 SERS 분석 연구동향)

  • Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was first discovered in 1974 by an unexpected Raman signal increase from Pyridine adsorbed on rough Ag electrode surfaces by the M. Fleishmann group. M. Moskovits group suggested that this phenomenon could be caused by surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which is a collective oscillation of free electrons at the surface of metal nanostructures by an external light source. After about 40 years, the SERS study has attracted great attention as a biomolecule analysis technology, and more than 2500 new papers and 500 review papers related to SERS topic have been published each year in recently. The advantages of biomaterials analysis using SERS are as follows; ① Molecular level analysis is possible based on unique fingerprint information of biomolecule, ② There is no photo-bleaching effect of the Raman reporters, allowing long-term monitoring of biomaterials compared to fluorescence microscopy, ③ SERS peak bandwidth is approximately 10 to 100 times narrower than fluorescence emission from organic phosphor or quantum dot, resulting in higher analysis accuracy, ④ Single excitation wavelength allows analysis of various biomaterials, ⑤ By utilizing near-infrared (NIR) SERS-activated nanostructures and NIR excitation lasers, auto-fluorescence noise in the visible wavelength range can be avoided from in vivo experiment and light damage in living cells can be minimized compared to visible lasers, ⑥ The weak Raman signal of the water molecule makes it easy to analyze biomaterials in aqueous solutions. For this reason, SERS is attracting attention as a next-generation non-invasive medical diagnostic device as well as substance analysis. In this review, the principles of SERS and various biomaterial analysis principles using SERS analysis will be introduced through recent research papers.

A Fast Recognition System of Gothic-Hangul using the Contour Tracing (윤곽선 추적에 의한 고딕체 한글의 신속인식에 관한 연구)

  • Conventional methods of automatic recognition of Korean characters consist of the thinning processing, the segmentation of connected fundamental phonemes and the recognition of each fundamental character. These methods, however require the thinning processing which is complex and time consuming. Also several noise components make worse effects on the recognition of characters than in the case of no thinning. This paper describes the extraction method of the feature components of Korean fundamental characters of the Gothic Korean letter without the thinning. We regard line-components of the contour which describes the character's external boundary as the feature-components. The line-component includes the directional code, the length and the start point in the image. Each fundamental character is represented by the string of directional codes. Therefore the recognition process is only the string pattern matching. We use the Gothic-hangul in the experiment. The ecognition rate is 92%.

A Design of Ultra-sonic Range Meter Front-end IC (초음파 거리 측정회로용 프론트-엔드 IC의 설계)

  • This paper describes a ultrasonic signal processing front-end IC for distance range meter and body detector. The burst shaped ultrasonic signal is generated by a self oscillator and its frequency range is about 40[kHz]-300[kHz]. The generated ultrasonic signal transmit through piezo resonator. The another piezo device transduce from received ultrasonic signal to electrical signals. This front-end IC contained low noise amplifier, band pass filter, busrt detector and time pulse generator and so on. This IC has two type of new idea for improve function and performance, which are self frequency control (SFC) and Variable Gain Control amplifier (VGC) scheme. The dimensions and number of external parts are minimized in order to get a smaller hardware size. This device has been fabricated in a O.6[um] double poly, double metal 40[V] High Voltage CMOS process.

  • Existing character recognition algorithm recognize characters in simple conditional. It has the disadvantage that recognition rates often drop drastically when input document image has low quality, rotated text, various font or size text because of external noise or data loss. In this paper, proposes the optical character recognition algorithm which using bicubic interpolation method for the catalog retrieval when the input image has rotated text, blurred, various font and size. In this paper, applied optical character recognition algorithm consist of detection and recognition part. Detection part applied roberts and hausdorff distance algorithm for correct detection the catalog of book. Recognition part applied bicubic interpolation to interpolate data loss due to low quality, various font and size text. By the next time, applied rotation for the bicubic interpolation result image to slant proofreading. Experimental results show that proposal method can effectively improve recognition rate 6% and search-time 1.077s process result.

Development and Evaluation of Smart Jacket with Embedded Wearable Device (웨어러블 디바이스를 이용한 기능성 스마트 재킷 개발 및 평가)

  • As global interest in clothing spreads over the smart clothing which arouses high added-value in the apparel industry, this study is to develop a smart jacket with an electrically-vibrating device maintaining excellent appearance and comfort. The vibrating device has a massage function that could relieve muscle pain near shoulders and neck. The purposes of this research are to develop jacket pattern for men in their thirties considering body shapes and fashion trend, to develop a wearable device that is composed of motor and controller and integrate it into a jacket, and to assess the external appearance and functional satisfaction of the smart jacket through the wearing test. The results are as follows: 1. In order to develope an appropriate jacket pattern for men in their thirties, several patterns were assessed for their fitting comfort. The final pattern was completed after making alterations some parts, and showed high satisfaction as 3.6(on a five-point scale) in all categories. 2. A vibrating device was developed by connecting motor, controller, battery and switch. Developing this device, focus was maximizing the strength of motor and minimizing the heat generated from motor and controller. Snaps were placed between inner and outer cloth of jacket so that the vibrating device could be easily attachable and detachable. The motor was located around Trapezius where muscles often get stiff. A switch was designed to be used in selecting the modes of Strong, Weak, and Cross Tapping. 3. The wearing test was conducted to examine outer appearance, comfort for motion, and functionality of the smart jacket. The results of assessing outer appearance showed that the location for attaching the vibrating device was not noticeable but looked natural, and there is almost no change in outer appearance when the vibrating device operates. The result of assessing comfort of action revealed that wearer's satisfaction was high in all categories about activity, wearer's comfort, etc. The result also showed that wear's satisfaction for effects of vibrating massage, easiness in using the device, heat generation was not less than 3.5 in all categories except a category about noise.

A Study on Crane Wire Rope Flaws Signal Processing Using Discrete Wavelet Transform (Wavelet 변환을 이용한 크레인 와이어 로프 결함 신호처리에 관한 연구)

  • Wire ropes are used in a myriad of various industrial applications such as elevator, mine hoist, construction machinery, lift, and suspension bridge. Especially, wire rope of crane is important component to container transfer. If it happens wire rope failures in operating, it may lead to safety accident, economic power loss by productivity decline, competitive power decline of container terminal and so on. To solve this problem, we developed wire rope fault detecting system as a portable instrument, and this system is consisted of 3 parts that fault detecting part using hall sensor, permanent magnets and analog unit, and digital signal processing part using data acquisition card, monitoring part using wavelet transform, denoising method. In this paper, a wire rope is scanned by this system after makes several broken parts on the surface of wire rope artificially. All detected signal has external noise or disturbance according to circumstances. So, we applied to discrete wavelet transform to extract a signal from noisy data that was used filter. In practical applications of denoising, it is shown that wavelet pursue it with little information loss and smooth signal display. It is verified that the detecting system by denoising has good efficiency for inspecting faults of wire ropes in service. As a result, by developing this system, container terminal could reduce expense because of extension of wire ropes exchange period and could competitive power. Also, this system is possible to apply in several fields like that elevator, lift and so on.

Performance Analysis of Nonlinear Satellite Communication System in the CCI And ACI Interference Channel (간섭채널에서 비선형 위성 통신 시스템의 특성 분석)

  • Satellite communication system uses a high non-linear HPA(high power amplifiers) in the earth station and satellite transponder. Therefore, it is important to consider the nonlinear effect of HPA on the communication system. In this paper, we find the variation of power spectrum density by nonlinearity HPA and the change of harmonic component according to IBO (input back-off). When the BPSK is used for satellite communication system, we analyze BER performance including the external co-channel interference (CCI) and the adjacent channel interference (ACI) resulting from the HPA nonlinearity. BER degrades as ACI magnitude grows up when the uplink SNR, uplink SIR (signal to co-channel interference power ratio) and downlink SIR are constant at some level. In case there is only non-linear HPA in the satellite, it is shown that BER considerably depends on the ACI magnitude ACI. When there are two non-linear HPAs in the both earth station and satellite, much BER degradation results from the CCI and ACI.
