  • To set efficient transformation system in chrysanthemum, thirty-four chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum Kitamura) varieties were collected and cultured for shoot regeneration. Five varieties, ‘Shuho-no-chikara', ‘Zinba', ‘Baekma', ‘Pink pride' and ‘Keumsu' of them were selected, because they had a high shoot regeneration efficiency. MS medium containing 1.0 mg/L NAA and BA respectively was very adequate for shoot regeneration in those varieties. MS medium with 3.0 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L kinetin in ‘Shuho-no-chikara' and the medium with 0.5 mg/L NAA and 3.0 mg/L BA in ‘Keumsu' were also suitable for shoot regeneration. The most efficient callus induction and shoot regeneration were obtained on MS medium. Shoot regeneration was enhanced more than 8% on MS medium with 0.3% phytagel and 10-15 mg/L putrescine. The best cultural material for shoot regeneration was stem. When stem was used as a culture material, shoot regeneration rate was increased more than 26% and the days to shoot regeneration was shortened about 14 days.

  • To establish the mass propagation method of Typha orientatis Presl, several factors influencing seed germination were investigated. The best seed germination of T. orientalis was achieved under the light and 25~3$0^{\circ}C$ temperature. GA$_3$ tended to enhance seed germination, and 500 mg.L$^{-1}$ GA$_3$ showed 90.7% germination, which was 1.2 times of control. Compared to control, BA treatment prohibit seed germination. Especially, seeds were not germinated under 500 mg.L$^{-1}$ BA treatment. In case of KNO$_3$ and Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$ treatment, the germination rate was decreased by all concentrations, except 100 mM Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of insecticide control system in eggplant greenhouse. In all treatments, the average densities of Frankliniella occidentalis and Tetranychus urticae were $0.3{\sim}1.8$ and 0.0 per leaf at 28 days after treatment, respectively. These results indicate the alternate application of Abamectin EC and Spinosad GW can be useful in control for F. occidentalis and T. urticae in eggplant greenhouse. The density suppression effect against Liriomyza trifolii and Trialeurodes vaporariorum was maintained for 28 days after treatment, but control effect was low at 28 days after treatment.

  • The purposes of the study were to identify the present status of the agricultural extension services in Korea and its surrounding environment, and to search the desirable ways of improvement under the serious restructuring period occurred by the nation-wide localization, globalization and development of information technology. Agricultural extension services have made great accomplishment in the education for rural people and agricultural technology diffusion, but agricultural extension service system no longer well fits in the changed environment. Agricultural extension services in Korea should restructure the system, function and methods in order to cope with the changing technology and rural society. The objectives of the extension services should be clear and simplified so that the extension workers can understand their role and duty more clearly. The local governments should encourage the extension workers to carry out their services diligently and with the pride. Also, the extension workers should change their mind to fit in the changing world and should improve their capability for their services.

  • In March 2000, gray mold was found on day lily (Hemerocallis fulva L.) in Korea. Among the symptoms observed was blight or early rot with chlorotic halo of the leaves. All the isolates obtained from the lesions of the diseased plant parts were identified as Botrytis elliptica, based on the morphological characteristics of conidia. Conidia that formed on conidiogenous cells were not in chains, hyaline to pale brown, unicellular, ellipsoidal to obovate with a single hilum at the base, entirely verruculose, and 21-31 x 12-$23\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Pathogenicity of the fungus was established by artificial inoculation on day lily plants. This is the first record of gray mold on day lily caused by B. elliptica in Korea.

  • The Strong Small Farm (SSF) is small farm, but strong farm so that the SSF competes with farm of the world. Also, SSF means that farmer brings about management innovation through improvements of continuous competence and individual efforts. Ultimate goals of SSF are to improve competence of farm household by 20 percent and to increase farm household income by 10 percent. The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors affecting the improvement of competence of the Strong Small Farm. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, the results indicated that competence of farm household was improved by 8.5 percent. Second, the findings showed that management plan report, implement report, precision management consulting and whether or not he or she was urban to rural returner had a significant impact on improvement of competence.

  • With the recent increase in data disclosure, the Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network (CKAN), which is an open-source data distribution platform, is drawing much attention. CKAN is used together with additional extensions, such as Datastore and Datapusher for data management and Harvest and DCAT for data collection. This study derives the problems of CKAN itself and Harvest Extension. First, CKAN causes two problems of data inconsistency and storage space waste for data deletion. Second, Harvest Extension causes three additional problems, namely source deletion that deletes only sources without deleting data themselves, job stop that cannot delete job during data collection, and service interruption that cannot provide service, even if data exist. Based on these observations, we propose herein an improved CKAN that provides a new deletion function solving data inconsistency and storage space waste problems. In addition, we present an improved Harvest Extension solving three problems of the legacy Harvest Extension. We verify the correctness and the usefulness of the improved CKAN and Harvest Extension functions through actual implementation and extensive experiments.

  • In this paper, we study the advantages of using range extension cooperative transmission (CT) in multi-hop energy harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs) from the network layer perspective. EH-WSNs rely on harvested energy, and therefore, if a required service is energy-intensive, the network may not be able to support the service successfully. We show that CT networks that utilize both range extension CT and non-CT routing can successfully support services that cannot be supported by non-CT networks. For a two-hop toy network, we show that range extension CT can provide better services than non-CT. Then, we provide a method of determining the supportable services that can be achieved by using optimal non-CT and CT routing protocols for EH-WSNs. Using our method and network simulations, we justify our claim that CT networks can provide better services than nonCT networks in EH-WSNs.
