  • The development of EDI is playing a very great role in strengthening corporate competitiveness in the foreign market in addition to the expansion of the size of trade volumes between nations and the solution of the problem or streamlining procedures for trade as well as the smooth processing of trade business and cost and time savings effects. At point in time that corporate credibility and national image in Korea have greatly fallen in the IMF-supported regime, Korea is making every effort to restore its national credibility through the expansion of exports and focusing on the increase of exports through EDI for trade as part of this. Therefore. this study was intended to probe the EDI promotion strategy of the exporting firm with the development of EDI As a result, the following conslusion was drawn : (1) Development of the EDI system to provide immediate options. (2) Making the staff information - minded at a company-wide level. (3) Development of the website as the tool of the marketing strategy. (4) Construction of the Cyber Shopping Mall.

A Study on the Regression Models of Success and Failure of Tenders for Plant and Construction Exports (플랜트 및 건설수출 입찰의 성공 및 실패모델에 관한 연구)

  • This paper is to suggest strategic options for improving the export performance of the plant and construction industry. The overall objective of this study is to explore the feasibility of a sustained export performance in the plant and overseas construction industry by an analysis of its international competitiveness and technological competence. The empirical work of this study relates to a chosen sample of Korean and non-Korean firms in the plant and construction industry sector. Primary data was collected through a comprehensive questionnaire survey administered to plant and construction firms in twelve countries, including Korea. The actual number of firms for which full information at a sufficient level of disaggregation was obtained was 62, a response rate of 44.6%. Of these, 42 firms were drawn from Korean plant and construction firms and the remaining 20 firms from 11 other countries. The structure of responding firms by industry shows a total of 29 plant exporters and 33 construction firms. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS statistical technique such as Multiple Regression in order to examine the linear relationship among variables. The findings of the study indicate that export success and failure in plant and construction export markets is determined by firm size and by various qualitative variables. The high export volume (export success) of Plant and construction exporters is more strongly influenced by mutual economic cooperation and number of employees than by sales volume and competent knowledge of the plant and construction markets. It was also found that weak political and diplomatic relation between countries, low sales volume and lack of bid experience have an adverse effect and represent serious barriers to exports.

Trends and Effect of foreign Direct Investment in Fashion Industry (패션산업에서 해외직접투자 -무역과의 관계를 중심으로-)

  • With the advent of the globalization trend of the industry, the enterprises in the fashion industry around the world have witnessed a surge in exports and foreign direct investment (FDI). Many fashion enterprises in each country, along with the multi-national enterprises, have engaged in global outsourcing of the production process in order to increase their global competitiveness, and have attempted to expand their commercial presence in the world market by entering into other foreign markets. Such market entry attempts have lead to the increase of FDI and trade by the fashion enterprises. This study attempts to examine the interactive relation between FDI and export/import of fashion products in different fashion industries both worldwide and in Korea. First, we will look into the relation between export/imports and FDI of each regional fashion industry, then expand the study to the relation between those two factors found in the fashion industry of Korea in general, and finally, to the relation between the two factors in the fashion industry of countries that are the major export nations of fashion goods into Korea. The data which this study is based on were collected from the International Trade Statistics Yearbook Vol. II (UN, 1991-2002, New York: UN), UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics (UN, 1996-2001, Vienna: UN), UNCTAD database, the archives of the Korea Federation of Textile Industry and the archives of the Export-Import Bank of Korea. The methods of analysis used in this study were correlation, regression, and descriptive statistics of the data. The result of this study showed that each fashion industry of different regions was subject to a diversity of effects. For one, the fashion industry in Korea showed a significant correlation between outbound investment and both export and import. On the other hand, the apparel industry in Korea showed a significant correlation between outbound investment and imports, but no such correlation between outbound investment and exports.

  • The IT industry plays the engine role in Korean economy which reaches up to 17% of Korean GDP. However the current global economic depression which stems mainly from the US has caused insufficient demand in IT industry. The decreased demand leads to a drug in the market, to fierce price competitions and increasing fear on the world IT market depression. Considering the facts, there are strong demands for the diversification of the products of exports and the countries Korea exports to. These need differentiated strategies which can be summarized in various IT package-type overseas expansion model including the consideration in strategic items, countries, connecting large and small-medium size companies or businesses and related industries. The importance of IT industry in Korean economy will grow constantly and the IT package-type overseas expansion models will preside the movements.

  • Logistics needs in Asia are surprisingly increasing due to rapid growth of China Therefore, each country is trying to develop ports in order to attract logistics needs. Korea, also, begins to perform active port marketing policy, centering around Busan port and Kwangyang port, in order to become a logistics hub in Northeast Asia Recently, competitiveness of Japan has decreased due to increase in the inland transport costs, so Japanese is deliberating various counter plans. While Japan is stagnant, Korea has an opportunity for activating Busan port and Kwangyang port. This study estimates logistics costs by classifying types of delivery routes of Japanese imports and exports containers; that is, by dividing the case of using main ports in Japan, or Busan port and Kwangyang port. As a result, logistics costs are greatly reduced when the containers go by way of Busan port and Kwangyang port social and logistics costs.

  • This is the time that political effort is required to encourage domestic companies to expand overseas facing internationalization. Regarding exportation, not only major companies, but SMEs also should be greatly concerned. As for the case of SMEs, it has been thought to be as inferior brand image in domestic market, but as world market such as China is very huge and diverse. There is high possibility of increasing in export of SMEs with concerns. To strengthen the competitiveness and develop the potential of SMEs, promoting renovation of system is a must, over the renovation of skill or management. It is important to figure out the degree of contribution and route for exports, since every company has different aspects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to calculate the degree of contribution of Korean SMEs, and to find further improvements by understanding export route. It also tries to suggest proper policies to vitalize SME's export.

Analysis of Korean Import and Export in the Semiconductor Industry: A Global Supply Chain Perspective

  • Purpose - Semiconductors are a significant export item for Korea that is expected to continue to contribute significantly to the Korean economy in the future. Thus, the semiconductor industry is a critical component in the 4th Industrial Revolution and is expected to continue growing as the non-face-to-face economy expands as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, this paper aims to empirically investigate how semiconductors are imported and exported in Korea from a global supply chain perspective by analysing import and export data at the micro-level. Design/methodology - This study conducts a multifaceted analysis of the global supply chain for semiconductors and related equipment in Korea by examining semiconductor imports and exports by semiconductor type, year, target country, mode of transportation, airport/port, and domestic region, using import/export micro-data. The visualisation, flow analysis, and Bayesian Network methodologies were used to compensate for the limitations of each method. Findings - Korea is a major exporter of semiconductor memory and has the world's highest competitiveness but is relatively weak in the field of system semiconductors. The trade deficit in 'semiconductor equipment and parts' is clearly growing. As a result, continued investment in 'system semiconductors' and 'semiconductor equipment and parts' technology development is necessary to boost exports and ensure a stable supply chain. Originality/value - Few papers on semiconductor trade in Korea have been published from the perspective of the global supply chain or value chain. This study contributes to the literature in this area by focusing on import and export data for the global supply chain of the Korean semiconductor industry using a variety of approaches. It is our hope that the insights gained from this study will aid in the advancement of SCM research.

Comparison of the RCA Between China and KOR: From the Perspective of Value-Added

  • Purpose - This paper empirically explores the RCA of electrical equipment trade between China and Korea from the perspective of gross trade and value-added trade. The goal of this paper is to scan the electrical equipment's RCA, the decomposition of gross exports, and the impacts of an exerted shock. Design/methodology - We applied the domestic value-added method in measuring the RCA, which could be more accurate than traditional RCA since it excludes foreign value-added. Based on the research purpose, this paper follows the framework of Koopman, Wang, and Wei (2014)-as extended by Wang, Wei, and Zhu (2018). It extracts the data from the 2019 Multi-regional Input-Output (MRIO) databases compiled by the Asian Development Bank in January 2021. Findings - After rigorous examination, the main findings are as follows: First, the electrical equipment sector maintains a consistent comparative advantage in either assessing method. Second, China exports more gross goods of electrical equipment to the world than South Korea does, but there is a trade deficit with Korea. Third, South Korea and P.R. China are the most significant bilateral partners of foreign value-added sourcing. Finally, it is surprising that there is a shock on electrical equipment; the partner's service, as well as manufacturing sectors, would be affected. Originality/value - This paper explores the revealed comparative advantage between Korea and China from traditional gross export and value-added perspectives. Second, we apply the information from the 2019 MRIO database compiled by the Asian Development Bank in January 2021, reflecting the current situation. Third, this paper analyzes the electrical equipment and the impacts on other parties' sectors. Finally, we carry out the subjects that deserve to be investigated in the future.

The Impact of Environmental TBTs on Exports of Korean Manufactures (환경 TBT가 국내 주요 제조업 수출에 미치는 영향)

  • The impact of each country's environmental protection and climate change policies on trade is increasing. The strengthening of trade barrier resulted in an increase of Technical Barriers to Trade(TBTs). This international trend carries important implications for Korean manufacturers, which is highly dependent on trade. Discussions on the trade effects of TBT are still ongoing. This study that quantitatively analyzed the effect of TBT on trade have employed a gravity model. As a result of the analysis using the basic model, it was found that the effect of environmental TBT notifications on trade is positive(+) overall. However, the electrical machinery and equipment·electronics industries are negatively affected by environmental TBT. There is a pressing need to preemptively identify the impact of environmental TBT in major countries on the exports of Korean manufacturing industries in order to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic industries and pursue countermeasures.

A Comparative Study on the Price Competitiveness of Korean Beef(Hanwoo) in China : An Analysis Based on Market Research Focusing on Beijing and Shanghai (한-중FTA대비 국내 육우산업 가격경쟁력 비교 : 중국 베이징, 상하이 시장조사를 중심으로)

  • Recently, the Chinese beef consumption market has faced a sudden surge. With China's beef imports reaching $1.33 billion in 2013, the global market closely monitors China's rising consumption of beef. Because there have been no exports of Korean beef (Hanwoo) to China previously, the negative effects of opening of beef market between South Korea and China are speculated as the South Korean government advances FTA negotiations further with China. In order to prepare for the opening of beef market between the two nations and to understand Hanwoo's export competitiveness, our research team conducted a market research on beef price and quality in Beijing and Shanghai. Based on our research, we deduced the price of Hanwoo and analyzed the price competitiveness of Hanwoo in the emerging Chinese beef market. Based on the market research, the price competitiveness of Hanwoo's topside/inside, rib and loin are well-positioned compared to Chinese and imported high-end beef group in Beijing and Shanghai market. Specifically, the price competitiveness of Hanwoo's topside/inside and loin are dominant in Beijing while that of rib and loin are dominant in Shanghai.
