Influence of Leadership Style on Affect Climate and Organizational Performance in Korean Export Manufacturing Enterprises (한국 수출제조기업의 리더십 스타일이 정서분위기와 조직성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study incorporates the structural relationships between leadership styles (LS), affect climate (AC), and organizational performance (OP) in Korean export manufacturing companies with three or more overseas subsidiaries. A theoretical model is suggested with the following empirical results. First, the positive effect of engaging leadership (EL) on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), as well as of engaging leadership, involving leadership (IL), and goal-oriented leadership (GL) on team performance (TP), proved to be significant. Second, both engaging leadership and goal-oriented leadership have significant positive effects on optimism, while involving leadership has significant negative effects on pessimism. Third, only optimism has a positive (+) effect on OCB and TP. The mediating effects were proved to be significant in two paths: one in EL->optimism->OCB and the other in EL->optimism->TP. Finally, in responding to rapid changes in the external environment of exporting companies, the engaging leadership is a key source of organizational performance by forming a favorable affect climate. Therefore, top management should recognize the role of team leaders and strengthen their leadership training. In addition, it was confirmed that leaders with emotional intelligence that can respond to the affects of members play a more important role in forming an optimistic climate in Korea export manufacturing enterprises with foreign subsidiaries.

An Analysis of Policy and Technology Status of Smart City for Revitalization of Smart City Industry (스마트도시 산업 활성화를 위한 스마트도시 정책 및 기술현황 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, Korea is promoting cooperation with various countries, centering on ASEAN countries, with the aim of exporting Korean smart cities for the globalization of smart cities. The purpose of this study is to select excellent smart city technologies through analysis of smart city technologies owned by domestic companies and company status, and to prepare a plan for revitalization of companies with smart city technologies. Through prior research, the implications were derived through research on the existing smart city. Next, established a smart city policy analysis and smart city technology classification criteria through Korea and Overseas smart city policy and Korea smart city technology status DB. And the big data of smart city technology possessed by Korea companies and a plan for selecting a smart city export technology was prepared through analysis by region and company. As a result, to activate the technology possessed by Korea companies and to export overseas, it seems to need financial support and tax incentives that secure a pathway to export specialized smart technologies of SMEs, along with citizen participation and institutional supplementation. The smart city technology fields with the highest utilization in Korea were traffic, green energy, e-government, crime prevention, and construction, and the service types were platform, IoT, AI, big data, and GIS/GPS. These technologies are expected to contribute to building a platform for overseas smart city technology exports.

  • The actual status of production, management and export of 96 traditional food processing companies which supported by the government in Kyungpook province were investigated. Governmental support contributed to the increase of farmhouse income, employment and depreciation of agricultural products a bit, but it was supported mostly to unexperienced party. Technologies for food processing developed in institute and college were little. 42 percent of packaging design was developed by service commission, but the agency was very limited. Total export price in 1996 was 2.3 billion Won, but it was decreased in 1997. The responce to the prospect of traditional food processing work, 37.5 percent replied that this work can bring up as exportable product, but ambiguious response was a little. To settle a weakness of farming food processing work, the establishment of special marketing comapny was required and this company should accomplish marketing advertizing and exporting business.

History of fermented condiments industry in Korea (우리나라 발효조미료 산업의 발달사)

  • The history of fermented condiments symbolizes that of the fermentation industry of Korea. Daesang Co. (ex Miwon) initiated the production of MSG using fermentation process in 1960 for the very first time. Ever since, both Daesang and CJ Co. (ex Cheil Jedang) have scrambled for taking up bigger share of Korean market in the field of MSG, IG-coated MSG, and mixed seasoning. It is noteworthy that both companies have powerfully contributed to the development of Korean fermentation industry. Daesang initiated exporting plants to Indonesia in 1973, whereas CJ has become the global leader of the IMP market. Furthermore, both of them have developed such as not only amino acids but also nucleic acid-related substances, organic acids, enzymes etc. with glutamic acid as a platform. It is anticipated that the two will develop the newly diversified edible substances and various kinds of fermented foods along with new food cultures.

  • E-business enables SMEs to reduce transaction costs and maintain export competitiveness in rapidly changing overseas markets. It is required to raise the entrepreneurial awareness of e-business of exporting SMEs. This study examines the characteristics of enterprises that play an important role in the introduction and utilization of e-business by domestic export SMEs. It explores the mechanisms that search and exploit these opportunities in an entrepreneurial way, and examines the process leading to export performance. We conducted a survey for empirical analysis and analyzed the data from 316 companies using e-business in Korea. As a result, both the international entrepreneurial orientation and the IT competence tended to be significant for the perception of e-business entrepreneurs and showed a different pattern in terms of size of influence. In addition, cooperation and operation among e-business entrepreneurs' perceptions have a direct impact on the export performance of SMEs.

  • Recently marketing methods of small and medium exporting firms have changed from internet marketing using homepage, or e-catalogs, to search engine marketing. However, there is no specific proof of search engine marketing effectiveness. Therefore the purpose of this research is to explore marketing performance of search engine marketing(SEM) based on search engine optimization. In order to build an optimal SEM strategy, quantitative data are collected from the Google-analytics such as homepage visits, page views, and traffic source for three years. At the same time, this study has carried out a survey to measure the qualitative effectiveness. The result of this quantitative study suggests that the existing carryover effects and lag effects would be maintained through search engine optimization. Meanwhile, the qualitative survey shows that satisfaction and awareness of homepage have been improved after search engine optimization. This can support logically increase of homepage visiting ratio of quantitative analysis. Also exporting companies know very well, that traffic and page views have increased after search engine optimization.

A Study on the Value Added Criterion of Rules of Origin under FTAs with the US and EU: Focusing on Automotive Sector

  • Purpose - This study deals with a strategic plan for meeting the value added criteria effectively, which is one of the methods of determining origin used in preferential trade such as FTA. Automobile products, one of the major Korean export items, were selected to give a practical use against the FTA requirements. Design/methodology - This study is based on the value-added criteria of the Korea-US and Korea-EU FTAs that apply various value-added criteria. The Korea-US FTA adopts the RVC method based on the integration, deduction and net cost methods, while the MC method is employed in the Korea-EU FTA. The methodology used in this work is an extended literature review, analysis of the value-added criteria applied to automobile products under Korea-US and Korea-EU FTA with some secondary statistics. Findings - Based on in - depth analysis of the value - added criteria requirements for automobile products stipulated in the Korea - US FTA and the Korea - EU FTA, two strategic considerations are suggested. First is 'appropriate value-added strategy' and the second is 'strategy of changing production and trade structure'. The second strategy is a bit used in Korea but this is not considered best if the first strategy is ignored or forgotten. The second one is meaningful when this becomes inevitable. Research limitations/implications - This study is primarily designed to assist Korean auto mobile industry players exporting to EU and USA but this may help to auto part or material producers in FTA counter party territories being EU or USA as the preferential tariffs are applied on a inter region basis. A further research other than auto mobiles using other major FTAs might be followed later. Originality/value - There has been so far little research on strategic factors to meet the value-added origin requirements. This study, therefore, is expected to contribute facilitating the decision of FTA origin and to improve the utilization of FTA by allowing exporting companies using value added criterion to more smoothly meet origin requirements. This will also enable the tax authorities to utilize the value-added criterion to validate effectively the origin of imports where preferential tariffs are applied.

Detection of Earnings Management as a Measure of Income Smoothing on Fluctuations in Exchange Rates: Managerial Implications for Korean Exporters

  • Purpose - Foreign Exchange Rates (FER) have been one of the most significant factors for both Korean exporters and the economy of Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether exporters with a high level of Exchange Rate Elasticity of Sales (ERES) make the use of earnings management for Income Smoothing (IS). Design/methodology - Income smoothing was obtained using the methodology suggested by Leuz, Nanda and Wysocki (2003). Accruals-based Earnings Management (AEM) was estimated using Discretionary Accruals (DA) calculated by the operant Jones Model developed by Dechow, Sloan and Sweeney (1995). Real Earnings Management (REM) was obtained using the methodologies suggested by Roychowdhury (2006) and Cohen and Zarowin (2010). Data were 2,402 firm years of public listed companies on the KRX, which were not in the financial industry and had a settlement of accounts in December for the period from 2013 to 2017. Findings - Results of the evaluation are as follows. First, companies with higher levels of ERES have relatively lower levels of smoothing of reported income. This might be because a fluctuation in sales caused by an exchange rate fluctuation has a direct impact on the volatility of the reported income. Second, companies with high levels of both ERES and IS have a positive correlation with both AEM and REM. This might be because companies with high levels of IS engage in earnings management to smooth reported income. Specifically, it is possible to assume that for smoothing the reported income, not only AEM but also REM is practiced. Third, companies with high levels of ERES but low levels of IS have a negative correlation with both AEM and REM. This could be interpreted as companies exhibiting low levels of IS due to higher levels of ERES tend to control IS. In addition, such results were supported by firms relying highly on exporting, and are consequently sensitive to exchange rate fluctuation. Therefore, it may conclude that companies with high levels of ERES make the use of earnings management as a means of IS. Originality/value - This study can find its significance from the fact that it is the first study, empirically verifying that companies of Korea, where exportation is a large part, use both AEM and REM as a means for smoothing reported income upon facing exchange rate fluctuations. In addition, it is highly expected that the results of this study could be useful for participants of financial markets when making IS-related decisions.

  • In 1961, the Republic of Korea's first newly-constructed government building was completed. The government building, as ROK office, was erected as a twin with the USOM office in Sejong-ro. The reason why the ROK office and the USOM office were erected as a twin building is that the two offices were part of Foreign Operation Administration's Seoul Buildings Project in 1954. Within the project, the FOA office and the ROK office were rarely separated, and naturally, the ROK office was built according to the US standards. The planning, design, and construction phases which led by the US government were involved in the US architecture, engineering-construction companies. Because those AEC companies were familiar with the US technology and standards. In the phase of construction, Korean companies took part in the process under the supervise of Vinnell Corporation. The US expected to transfer its 'modern' and 'developed' technology through this process. The completed ROK office was widely known as the 'modern style (hyundae-sik)' building, which was body forth as glasses and new facilities. These factors were what the US emphasized for exporting architecture. The modifier, 'modern style (hyundae-sik)', given to the ROK office in the 1950s was a synonym for any new feeling that had never been seen hitherto. The newness of the ROK office, the 'modern style (hyundae-sik)' building, was specified as materials and facilities that indicates modern technology while in the absence of adequate knowledge.

A Study on Detection of Small Export Companies Utilizing Trade Exports Live Index (무역수출 라이브지수를 활용한 중소수출기업 발굴 연구)

  • There have been many discussions on export indices in trade exports, but there is no definite trade export index which can be explained by objective indicators. Korea International Trade Association (KITA), Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), etc., but we are currently in the process of thinking about ways to express the capabilities of exporting companies. In this study, we constructed the AI data sets by setting the activity indicators such as the size of the company and the credit score, the number of transaction customers, the number of transactions, the number of items, the transaction volume, and the transaction period as features, Lightgbm. Using the Graph Neural Network as an industrial cluster classification model, the export live index which expresses the exportable capacity among companies, items, and business groups was calculated. This includes the past activity of the company from the current calculating index Objectivity.
