A linear thermoviscoelastic material model, whose basis is on incremental constitutive equation that takes complete strain and temperature histories into account, is derived and computerized in the finite element code. The thermoviscoelastic F.E.M. code which is intended primarily to analyze the cylinder model during the cool-down period, embodies the assumption of linearly elastic bulk and visco-elastic shear responses, thermo-rheologically simple response to temperature change and isotropic thermal expansion. The verification of computer program is accomplished by first testing it against a closed form solution of A.M. Freudenthal & M. Shinozuka's. The stress and strain analyses of five cylindrical models are presented and compared with experimental results. Analytical results are good agreement with experimental results. Margins of safety are evaluated and its allowable ranges are presented.
We conduct an empirical study on RFID application to a real container terminal gate. The objective of this study is three-fold. The first is to design a new gate management process that applies RFID technology. For this purpose, we analyze current gate management process to find opportunities for improvement. The second is to verify the 433 and 900 Mhz RFID technology in terms of the recognition rate of information contained in RFID tag under various conditions such as the speed of vehicle, the position of RFID tag and the tilt of RFID reader. We perform some experimental tests for this verification. Finally, we try to find suitable conditions for the speed of vehicle, the position of RFID tag and the tilt of RFID tag reader based on results of the experimental tests. Those findings are obtained with some ANOVA tests. Additionally, we summarize anticipated issues when applying RFID technology to the gate management process and possible solutions for the issues.
Steel cables serve as the key structural components in long-span bridges, and the force state of the steel cable is deemed to be one of the most important determinant factors representing the safety condition of bridge structures. The disadvantages of traditional cable force measurement methods have been envisaged and development of an effective alternative is still desired. In the last decade, the vision-based sensing technology has been rapidly developed and broadly applied in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). With the aid of vision-based multi-point structural displacement measurement method, monitoring of the tensile force of the steel cable can be realized. In this paper, a novel cable force monitoring system integrated with a multi-point pattern matching algorithm is developed. The feasibility and accuracy of the developed vision-based force monitoring system has been validated by conducting the uniaxial tensile tests of steel bars, steel wire ropes, and parallel strand cables on a universal testing machine (UTM) as well as a series of moving loading experiments on a scale arch bridge model. The comparative study of the experimental outcomes indicates that the results obtained by the vision-based system are consistent with those measured by the traditional method for cable force measurement.
A new type of connection for steel-concrete composite bridges was developed by the Steel Structures Laboratory of Ecole Poytechinque $F{\acute{e}}d{\acute{e}}rale$ de Lausanne. Resistance to longitudinal shear is based on the development of shear stresses in the confined interfaces which form the connection. Confinement is provided by the reinforced concrete slab which encloses the connection and restrains the uplift (lateral separation) of the interfaces by developing normal stresses. The experimental investigation of the interfaces, under static and cyclic loading, enabled the development of the laws describing the structural behaviour of each interface. Those laws were presented by the authors in previous papers. The current paper focuses on the continuity of the research. It presents the experimental investigation on the new connection by means of push-out tests on specimens submitted to static and cyclic shear loading. Investigation revealed that the damage in the connection, due to cyclic loading, is expressed by the accumulation of a residual slip. A safe fatigue failure criterion is proposed for the connection which enabled the verification of the connection for the fatigue limit state with respect to the limit of fatigue. A numerical model is developed which takes into account the laws describing the interface behaviour and the analytical expressions for the confinement effect, the latter obtained by performing finite element analysis. This numerical model predicts the shear resistance of the connection and enables to assess its fatigue limit which is necessary for the fatigue design proposed.
This paper presents the design and implementation of an improved cascaded multilevel inverter topology with asymmetric DC sources. This experimental inverter topology is a stand-alone system with simulations and experiments performed using resistance loads. The topology uses four asymmetric binary DC sources that are independent from each other and one H-bridge. The topology was simulated using PSIM software before an actual prototype circuit was tested. The proposed topology was shown to be very efficient. It was able to generate a smooth output waveform up to 31 levels with only eight switches. The obtained simulation and experimental results are almost identical. In a 1,200W ($48.3{\Omega}$) resistive load application, the THDv and efficiency of the topology were found to be 1.7% and 97%, respectively. In inductive load applications, the THDv values were 1.1% and 1.3% for an inductive load ($R=54{\Omega}$ dan L=146mH) and a 36W fluorescent lamp load with a capacitor connected at the dc bus.

This paper presents the results of a study into the dynamic behaviour of a support structure of a mobile elevating work platform. The vibrations of the mechanical system of the observed structure are examined analytically, numerically, and experimentally. Within the analytical examination, a simple mathematical model is developed to describe free and forced vibrations. The dynamic analysis of the mechanical system is conducted using a discrete dynamic model with a reduced number of vibrational degrees of freedom. On the basis of the expression for the system energy, and by applying Lagrange's equations of the second kind, differential equations are derived for system vibrations, frequencies are determined, and the laws of forced platform vibration are established. At the same time, a nonlinear FEM model is developed and the laws of free and forced vibration are determined. The experimental and numerical part of the study deal with the examination of the real structure in extreme conditions, taking into account: the lowest eigenfrequency, forced actions that could endanger the general stability, the maximal amplitudes, and the acceleration of the work platform. The obtained analytical and numerical results are compared with the experiments. The experimental verification points to the adverse behaviour of the platform in excitation cases - swaying. In such a situation, even a relatively small physical force can lead to unacceptably high amplitudes of displacement and acceleration - exceeding the usual work values.
In the present study, an experimental assessment has been made of the drag reducing efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades, which were first devised by Hutchins(1). A detailed flow field measurements have been performed using 2-D time resolved PIV with a view to enabling the identification of drag reduction mechanism. In addition, an experimental investigation has been made of the applicability of outer-layer vertical blades to real ship model. The arrays of outer-layer vertical blades have been installed onto the flat side and flat bottom of a 300k KVLCC model. A series of towing tank test has been carried out to investigate resistance (CTM) reduction efficiency with various geometric parameters and installed places of blades. The installation of vertical blades led to the CTM reduction of 1.44~3.17% near the service speed.
Precast members have relatively good quality because they are manufactured in an environment suitable for quality control. A typical precast method in which pre-fabricated segments are assembled in the field requires a joint. Although the joint is a small part of the member, it greatly affects the behavior and quality of the structural member. In the previous study of this paper, the flexural strength of a joint, which is generally applied to half-depth precast deck systems, was verified to have higher strength than the design requirement. In addition, the proposed joint has been verified to have higher strength by reinforcing the connecting rebar. However, even if the flexural strength of the joints is sufficient, excessive deflection or lack of fatigue performance is likely to cause cracks in the half-depth precast deck system. In this study, the serviceability of the half-deck precast panel specimens with joints was evaluated and the experimental verification was conducted to evaluate the fatigue performance of the joint without connection rebar. As a result, the serviceability such as deflection and crack width was found to be higher than the design requirement in all the specimens. In the fatigue test, the fatigue effect was insignificant even in the absence of connection rebar.
The investigations of the coated-particles of nuclear fuel samples are carried out in three stages: front-end, irradiation in the reactor core, and post-irradiation examination. The front-end stage is the initial analysis of the failures rates of produced samples before they are placed in the reactor core. The purpose of the verification is to prepare the particles for an experiment that will determine the degree of damage to the coated particles at each stage. Before starting experiments with the samples, they must be properly prepared. Polishing the samples in order to uncover the inner layers is an important, initial experimental step. The authors of this paper used a novel way to prepare samples for testing - by applying an ion polisher. Mechanical polishing used frequently for sample preparations generates additional mechanical damages in the studied fuel particle, thus directly affecting the experimental results. The polishing methods were compared for three different coated particles using diagnostic methods such as Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that the ion polishing method is better because the level of interference with the structures of the individual layers of the tested samples is much lower than with the mechanical method. The same technique is used for the fuel particles undergone ion implantation simulating radiation damage that can occur in the reactor core.
Bridge displacement contains vital information for bridge condition and performance. Due to the limits of direct displacement measurement methods, the indirect displacement reconstruction methods based on the strain or acceleration data are also developed in engineering applications. There are still some deficiencies of the displacement reconstruction methods based on strain or acceleration in practice. This paper proposed a novel method based on long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to reconstruct the bridge dynamic displacements with the strain and acceleration data source. The LSTM networks with three hidden layers are utilized to map the relationships between the measured responses and the bridge displacement. To achieve the data fusion, the input strain and acceleration data need to be preprocessed by normalization and then the corresponding dynamic displacement responses can be reconstructed by the LSTM networks. In the numerical simulation, the errors of the displacement reconstruction are below 9% for different load cases, and the proposed method is robust when the input strain and acceleration data contains additive noise. The hyper-parameter effect is analyzed and the displacement reconstruction accuracies of different machine learning methods are compared. For experimental verification, the errors are below 6% for the simply supported beam and continuous beam cases. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate that the proposed data fusion method can accurately reconstruct the displacement.
