  • We present an experimental setup for measuring the mechanical performance of centrifugal blood pumps. Using a 3D printer to construct supporting parts and magnetic couplings, we developed the measurement setup that can be used for various types of blood pumps. The experimental setup is equipped with sensors to measure a variety of mechanical characteristics of blood pumps including pressure, flow rate, torque, temperature, and rotating speed. Our experimental measurements for two commercial blood pumps are consistent with data provided by manufacturers, which indicates that the our setup offers the accurate measurements of blood pump performance. Utilizing the experimental setup, we tested aqueous glycerin solutions mimicking the density and viscosity of blood, which enabled us to predict the difference in operations using water and blood.

  • The new experimental setup has been built at the 11b channel of the IBR-2 research reactor at FLNP, JINR, to study the elemental composition of samples by registration of prompt gamma emission during thermal neutron capture. The setup consists of a curved mirror neutron guide and a radiation-resistant HPGe high-purity germanium detector. The detector is surrounded by lead shielding to suppress the natural background gamma level. The sample is placed in a vacuum channel and surrounded by a LiF shield to suppress the gamma background generated by scattered neutrons. This work presents characteristics of the experimental setup. An example of hydrogen concentration determining in a diamond powder made by detonation synthesis is given and on its basis, the sensitivity of the setup is calculated being ~4 ㎍.

  • Drying process is involved in the production of various products including food, textiles, paper, pharmaceuticals, and batteries. Phase change of liquid to vapor generally requires enormous thermal energy, so in order to save energy, it is advantageous to develop an appropriate drier and use it under appropriate operating conditions, depending on the characteristics of materials. However, due to the complex, multiscale heat and mass transfer occurring during drying processes, predictions of appropriate drying conditions before actual operation are not easily achieved, leading to challenges in designing driers. Here, we developed a lab-scale experimental setup to evaluate the performance of band dries. The experimental setup was used to measure the moisture content and temperature change in the materials being dried in a belt dryer. Experimental results obtained using our lab-scale setup allow us to predict the performance of a full-scale band drier, thus suggesting a practical framework for predicting the drying process of various materials and developing band driers.

  • Perforated elements are extensively used in mufflers for the intake and exhaust systems of various fluid machines. Perforated elements are usually exposed to grazing flow or cross flow. For analyzing performances of mufflers, the impedance of perforated elements with mean flow is very important. The impedance of perforates under both conditions are measured with different experimental setups. Even if there is no flow, the preceding experimental method for grazing flow shows different values with both theoretical ones and measured under cross flow setup. Using high-order analysis considering phase differences, the experimental method for grazing flow can be modified. The acoustical impedance of perforated impedance contains interaction effects between orifices. After correcting these effects, the measured impedance with grazing flow setup show similar results with both theoretical impedance and measured ones under cross flow setup.

  • This paper report on experimental results of 5-level inverter by DC divided link voltage. We have alreday reported that DC divided link valtage comes to be able to reduse harmonic of out line voltage. So we tested whether DC divided link voltage can reduce harmonics in experimental setup. This paper shows simulation results and experimental results. And we confirmed that DC divided link voltage can also apply in experimental setup.

  • The spatial distribution of multipath fading using miniaturized experimental setup was analyzed. The spatial Fourier transform was carried out for the analysis of the period of fading and we could find out spatial frequency component of fading. Thus the analysis using this method shows the validity of miniaturized experimental setup. The miniaturized experimental setup was made by 5 times reducing of the real size. The simulation was performed at 2 GHz and the measurement was carried out at 10 GHz. Automatic antenna moving system was made for exact measurement of the multipath fading. Both simulated and measured results in miniaturized experimental setup were shown by electric field distribution and spatial frequency density distribution curves.

  • The authors previously presented that the experimental technique using fine bubbles generated by electrolysis simulated fire behavior in a tunnel. We improve this experimental setup to enable this to be considered tunnel-ventilation by circulation of salt water. In this paper we introduce the new experimental setup and the visualization of fine hydrogen bubbles simulated smoke in a ventilated tunnel by using a laser sheet are presented.

  • The thick plate produced by rolling process is used as the basic members of a ship structure. In this paper, we present a setup model to control the asymmetric factors causing plate bending in the upper or lower direction during rolling. A series of finite element analysis are conducted to predict the relationship between various asymmetric factors and plate bending. The setup model is developed by regressing the relationship to the linear equations with several non-dimensional parameters. The setup model is verified by a pilot rolling test and applied to actual rolling conditions. Results show that the model is substantial to predict the asymmetric deformation in the plate rolling process.

  • This paper presents the experimental setup for autonomous navigation of a robotic vehicle for touring university campus. The robotic vehicle is developed for navigation of specific areas such as university campus or play parks. The robotic vehicle can carry two passengers to travel short distances. For the robotic vehicle to navigate autonomously the specific distance from the main gate to the administrative building in the university, the experimental setup for SLAM is presented. As an initial step, a simple method of following the line detected by a single camera is implemented for the partial area. The central line on the pavement colored with two kinds, red and yellow, is detected by image processing, and the robotic vehicle is commanded to follow the line. Experimental studies are conducted to demonstrate the performance of navigation as a possible touring vehicle.

  • This paper presents the design of an active roll control system for a ground vehicle and an experimental study using an devised electric-actuating roll control system. Based on a three degree of freedom linear vehicle model, the controller is designed using lateral acceleration and rollrate feedback. In order to investigate the feasibility of an active control system, experimental work is carried out using a hardware-in-the-loop (Hil) setup which has been constructed by the devised electric-actuating system and the full vehicle model including tire characteristics. The performance is evaluated by an experiment using the Hil setup with limited bandwidth. Finally, in order to enhance the control performance in the transient region, a hybrid control strategy is proposed and evaluated.
