  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the limit of previously used six sigma quality process evaluation metrics, $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$, and a solution to overcome this drawback by using a metric based on performance evaluation of Z-factor quality innovation. Case analysis on projects from national six sigma contest from 2011 to 2012 is performed and literature review on new drug development HTS (High Throughput Screening) is used to propose innovative performance evaluation metrics. This research shows that experimental study on six sigma evaluation metric, $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$, have no significance difference between industrial type (Manufacturing, Semi-Public Institute, Public Institute) and CTQ type (Product Technology Type CTQ, Process Technology Type CTQ). Following discovery characterize this quality improvement as fixed target type project. As newly developed moving target type of quality innovation performance metric Z-Factor is used for evaluating experimental study, hypothetical analysis suggests that $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$ share different relationship or even show reciprocal relationship. Constraints of the study are relatively small sample size of only 37 projects from past 2 years and conflict on having interview and communication with six sigma quality practitioner for qualitative experimental study. Both moving target type six sigma innovation project and fixed target type improvement project or quality circle enables efficient ways for a better understanding and quality practitioner use by applying quality innovation performance metric. Downside of fixed target type quality performance evaluation metric, $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$, is presented through experimental study. In contrast, advantage of this study is that high throughput requiring product technology, process technology and quantum leap typed innovation effect is evaluated based on precision and accuracy and Z-Factor that enables relative comparison between enterprises is proposed and implemented.

  • This article aims to study the effects of adding steel fibers to concrete on the mechanical behavior of steel fiber concrete (SFC) slabs. After formulating the SFC, an experimental work was, first, conducted on $160\;{\times}\;320$ mm cylindrical specimens and $70\;{\times}\;70\;{\times}\;280$ mm prisms. Then, this study was carried out on 20 rectangular $1,100\;{\times}\;1,100\;{\times}\;60$ mm small slabs submitted to a distributed load. Two types of fibers with hooked ends were used: long fibers (LF) of a length of 50 mm and short fibers (SF) of a length of 35 mm. The studied parameters are compressive and tensile strengths and Young's modulus. Plain concrete (PC) small slabs were also prepared to be compared to the SFC specimens. The results showed that the compressive strength of SFC increased up to 25% while the splitting tests showed an improvement of the SFC reaching 45%. Tests on SFC small slabs also showed that a smaller deflection is obtained with respect to PC, which indicates an improvement in strength (up to 100%), in ductility and in resistance to cracking. The LF gives a better improvement in strength than the SF for a 70% $kg/m^3$ of steel proportioning.

  • Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. Current work is emphasized on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet is injected against through the leakage flow. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. In this study, both of a numerical analysis by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model are introduced in CFD analysis. The sealing effect of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied for various parameter in the experiment. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effects of sealing improvement are explained as decreasing of effective leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.

  • For an asymmetric scroll compressor for heat pump application, a numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the effects of injection port design on the compressor's performance under gas injection. To validate the simulation, the numerical results were compared with experimental results obtained from a scroll compressor with a base injection port design. There was good agreement between simulation and experimental results, with around a 1% difference in the injection mass flow rate when the injection pressure was below $12kgf/cm^2A$ for the heating mode. Various injection port angular positions were numerically tested to yield better injection performance. The largest improvement in heating capacity was obtained at angles of $240^{\circ}$ and $200^{\circ}$ inward from the scroll wrap end angle for low-temperature and standard heating conditions, respectively, while the maximum COP improvement was at $365^{\circ}$ and $280^{\circ}$, respectively. A considerable improvement in cooling capacity was also found at the injection port angle of $240^{\circ}$.

  • This paper describes about the efficiency improvement of switched reluctance generator (SRG) over the rated speed region. Since the current shape has a great influence on the loss of the machine, so the system efficiency can be improved by optimizing the current shape. In case the wide speed range application such as wind power and medium size hydraulic power generation, a method of switching angle control is suggested to obtain the wanted current shapes. In order to verify the method, the experimental platform is set up. The feasibility of the theory is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • A Design of Experiments(DOE) approach to an experimental study of fuselage drag and stability characteristics of a helicopter configuration was applied to achieve an accuracy improvement in the wind tunnel testing. The impact of blocking the test was assessed by comparing the ANOVA table for the blocked and unblocked cases. For a second-order response model, the role of blocking resulted in a substantial increase in the accuracy of test results. These accuracy improvement could be achieved through randomization, blocking, and replication of the data points i.e. a re-ordering of the test sequence where the data were acquired.
