  • The high speed machining which can improve the production and quality in machining has been adopted remarkably in dietmold industry. As the speed of machine tool spindle increases, the machinability evaluation and monitoring of high speed machining is necessary. In this study, the machinability of 30, 000rpm class spindle was evaluated by using the developed tool dynamometer and the machining properties of high hardened and toughness materials in high speed were examined. Finally, the in-process monitoring technologies of tool wear were presented through the prediction by the experimental formula and pattern recognition by the neural network.

  • Basic equations and its solution procedure are derived for the analysis of an annular pump seal in which the rotor has a large static displacement from the centered position. The Bulk-flow is assumed for a control volume set in the seal clearance and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in axial and circumferential direction. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the control volume. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about an eccentric position. Flow variables are expanded by using Fourier series for the solution procedure. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the 12 elements of rotordynamic coefficients of the eccentric annular pump seal. The results of leakage and rotordynamic coefficients are presented and compared with the Marquette's experimental results and the San Andres' theoretical analysis.

  • The Pulse-Pre Pump Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (PPP-BOTDA) technique is introduced to implement the multi-direction strain measurement. The monitoring principle is stated. The layout scheme of optical fibers is proposed. The temperature compensation formula and its realizing method are given. The experiments, under tensile load, combined bending and tensile load, are implemented to validate the feasibility of the proposed method. It is shown that the PPP-BOTDA technique can be used to discriminate the multi-direction strains with high spatial resolution and precision.

  • In this paper, the bearing capacity of a non-eccentric and eccentric tubular, concrete-filled, steel bridge pier was studied through the finite element method. Firstly, to verify the validity of the numerical analysis, the finite element analysis of four steel tube columns with concrete in-fill was carried out under eccentric loading and horizontal cyclic loading. The analytical results were compared with experimental data. Secondly, the effects of the eccentricity of the vertical loading on the seismic performance of these eccentrically loaded steel tubular bridge piers were considered. According to the simulated results, with increasing eccentricity ratio, the bearing capacity on the eccentric side of a steel tubular bridge pier (with concrete in-fill) is greatly reduced, while the capacity on the opposite side is improved. Moreover, an empirical formula was proposed to describe the bearing capacity of such bridge piers under non-eccentric and eccentric load. This will provide theoretical evidence for the seismic design of the eccentrically loaded steel tubular bridge piers with concrete in-fill.

  • In this study, a systematic approach for roll pass design in bar rolling was studied. To minimize the trial and errors in the process design, a roll CAD system and a FE analysis system were combined. Based on the system, a methodology for roll pass design by FEM was studied. At first, designed process was compared with the FE analysis results and process redesign based on the FEM results was performed to obtain the specified final geometry. Then, empirical formula for roll speed set-up was compared with the FE analysis results. Further study on various simulations for bar rolling will help in making up for the inaccuracy in the currently used empirical roll speed rules. In addition, verification of the accuracy of the FE analysis system must be performed using experimental data in the industry.

  • Due to high increase of labor charge and necessarity of better quality control on concrete, various studies have been carried out to improve a flowability of concrete without the use of mechanical vibrator. As a result of enthusiastic study, one can closely access to the development of high flowable concrete in a laboratorial view. Application to practical field, however, is still far as long as a regulation for construction is not properly specified. Based on the idea that lateral pressure measured from high flowable concrete will be larger than those from general typed concrete, we read a series of lateral pressure from mechanical pressure plate and compared those with the values calculated form specified formula.

  • New formulas for the minimum noise figure and the optimum source impedance of microwave FETs are derived using the noise equivalent circuits obtained from the steady-state Nyquist theorem for multi-terminal semiconductor devices. The derived formulas manifest the relationships between the noise sources and the physical parameters of a noise equivalent circuit. Furthermore the formulas can explain the effect of gate leakage current on the minimum noise figure and the optimum source impedance. comparisons with the published experimental data confirm the validity and usability of our formula.

  • Quantizers for digital coding systems are usually optimized with respect to a model of the probability density function of the random variable to be quantized. Thus a mismatch of the quantizer relative to the actual statistics of the random variable may be unavoidable. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of mismatched quantizers. For the modeling of the source statistics, various types of the Weibull distribution are used, and the optimization of the quantizer is carried with respect to the minimum mean-square error (mse) criterion. The goal of this paper is to find an estimate formula for the mismatched quantizer on Weibull sources.

  • Impact ionization model in GaAs has been presented by modified keldysh formula with two sets of power exponent of 7.8 and 5.6 in study. Impact ionization rate is derived from fermil's golden rule and ful lenergy band stucture based on empirical pseudopotential method. Impact ionization rates show anisotropic property in low energy region (<3eV), but isotropic in high energy region (3>eV). Full band monte calo simulator is coded for investigating the validity of the GaAs impact ionization model, and validity is checked by comparing impact ionization coefficients with experimental values and ones in anisotropic model. Valley transitions to energy alteration are explained by investigating electron motion in brillouin zone for full band model to electric field variation.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the subsonic airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid-incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid-compressible flow analysis. The Goradia's integral method and the Truckenbrodt integral method are adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar flow and the turbulent flow respectively. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. And the analysis of the seperated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered and its geometry expressed by the formula of Summey & Smith when no seperation occurs. A computational efficiency is verified by the comparison of the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.
