  • This paper presents a design technique of steel structures subjected to static and dynamic loadings using practical nonlinear inelastic analysis software. The beam-column approach using the stability functions and the plastic hinge concept enables the software to suitably predict second-order effects and inelastic behavior of beam-columns. For dynamic analysis. the incremental from of the equation of motion is solved by the use of a step-by-step numerical integration procedure in which the assumption of constant acceleration over a small time step is employed. The accuracy of the analysis program is validated using the results of ABAQUS program and experimental tests. A user-friendly graphic interface of the software is developed to facilitate the modeling process and result interpretation of the problem. A design example of large span bridge is presented to detail the direct design process using the practical advanced analysis software.

  • Delay defects on I/O pads, interconnections of a board, or interconnections among embedded cores can not be tested with the current IEEE 1149.1 boundary scan design. This paper introduces a simple design technique which slightly modifies the TAP controller to test delay defects at system speed. Experimental design shows that the technique proposed requires much less area than a commercial approach.

  • Structural failures, such as crack initiation, often arise near the bolted parts of the side member and trunnion bracket in some commercial vehicles. The purpose of this paper is: 1) establishment of a simple and practical bolted joint modelling technique and 2) determination of the key design variables for design improvement based on numerical experiments. Once the bolted joint modelling technique is established through experimental verification, the key design variables must be identified in order to alleviate the level of the stress concentration near the problem region. Numerical results indicate that the torsional rigidity of the frame cross-section should be increased to reduce the level of the maximum stress at the actual crack initiation location.

  • This study suggested fanless thermal design using CAE technique for the information storage system under the serious thermal problem. At first, main heat flow was controlled by CAE based fanless heat sink design not to influence sensitive optical pick-up sensor. Then, vent parametric studies found a thermal solution about highly concentrated case top heat due to fanless. These CAE results were verified by experimental methods. As a consequence of newly designed thermal path, thermal specification of optical pick-up sensor was satisfied and fanless thermal design for the information storage system was achieved.

  • One of the crucial factors which determine the quality and the accuracy of SEA model is how subsystems are defined. Experimental SEA technique had been a unique way to divide entire systems accurately for mid-frequency range, until FEA based virtual FRF response technique, virtual SEA method presented. Virtaul SEA has been developed for predictive SEA tool in early design process. In this study, Modal analysis results from modified crash FE model is used for Statistical transfer matrix. Observation nodes on the cockpit are grouped by attractive substructuring method based on point to point transfer and correlation matrix. Complex cockpit structure is divided into subsystems by automatic substructuring. Comparison with experimental SEA results validates the application of Virtual SEA to cockpit.

  • This paper proposes a decentralized control technique for 2-dimensional experimental helicopter systems. The decentralized control technique is especially suitable in large-scale control systems. We derive the stabilization condition for the interconnected Takagi-Sugeno (75) fuzzy system using the rigorous tool - Lyapunov stability criterion and formulate the controller design condition in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI). To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we include the experiment result as well as a computer simulation one, which strongly convinces us the applicability to the industry.

  • The wing rock phenomenon is a high angle of attack aerodynamic motion manifested by limit cycle roll oscillations. Experimental studies reveal that direct control and manipulation of leading edge vortices, through the use of 'blowing' techniques is effective in the suppression of wing rock. This paper presents the design of a robust controller for the experimental implementation of one such 'blowing' technique - recessed angle spanwise blowing (RASB), to achieve wing rock suppression over a range of operating conditions. The robust controller employs Takagi - Sugeno fuzzy system, which is fine-tuned by experimental simulations. Performance of the controller is assessed by real-time wind tunnel experiments with an 80 degree swept back delta wing. Robustness is demonstrated by the suppression of wing rock at a range of angles of attack and free stream velocities. Numerical simulation results are used to further substantiate the experimental findings.

  • In this paper, the optimized design of a rectangular O-ring groove has been analyzed for a maximum Cauchy stress and maximum strain using the Taguchi method. This method may efficiently optimize the design parameters for an O-ring groove of a LPG filling unit. The computed FEM results indicate that the optimized design parameters can only be drawn by nine experimental numbers of iterations when the Taguchi design technique has been employed with a finite element method. This means that the Taguchi design method is very useful for the optimization design of O-ring rectangular groove geometry. Based on the computed FEM results by the Taguchi design technique, the dimensions of a groove geometry are given as h=2.5 mm, d=2.74 mm, c=0.15 mm, and w=3.0 mm. In this study, the initial compression ratio of O-rings is recommended as 8.7% for a gas supply pressure of 18 $kg/cm^2$.

  • This study proposes a technique to estimate the material property of a paper by using an experimental methods and commercial CAE software. Under gravitation, if one side of the paper is attached to the ground, the opposite side of paper is largely deformed, and vibrates freely. Since the paper has an orthotropic characteristic due to its treatment, the deformations in two orthogonal directions of the dry paper are different. An experimental method to measure the static deformation of the paper introduces this phenomenon. And dynamic behavior, frequency of free vibration is measured. And then. virtual prototypes that can represent the static and dynamic behavior are modeled by using the commercial CAE software $RecurDyn^{MT}$/MTT3D, which has been widely used by the printer makers. While comparing the deformation and frequency from the experiment and simulation, a design optimization technique in the commercial CAE software of R-INOPL, $RecurDyn^{TM}$/AutoDesign is used to estimate the material property such as Young's modulus, shear modulus and density of the paper.

  • In this paper, a disturbance feedforward compensator design technique is proposed for an active magnetic bearing system subject to base motion for attenuating disturbance responses. In the consideration of the requirements on the model accuracy in the model based compensator designs, an experimental feedforward compensator design based on adaptive estimation by means of the Multiple Filtered-x least mean square(MFXLMS) algorithm is proposed. The performance and the effectiveness of the proposed technique will be presented in the succeeding paper in which the proposed technique is applied to a 2-DOF active magnetic bearing system subject to base motion.
