  • Underwater radiated noise is the key in acoustic stealth performance of modern naval ships. The underwater radiated noise predicted by the hull vibration with radiation efficiency cannot always give the information of radiation pattern which is essential to analyze of detection probability by enemy and to improve the operational performance of the naval ship. The radiation pattern of underwater radiated noise is able to be obtained with radiation efficiency and radiation directional coefficient. In this paper, a new method to extract the radiation efficiency and radiation directional coefficient is suggested and proved with the simulation and experiment by using cylindrical shell of 70 cm diameter in air.

  • We investigated subsurface structures of the Bransfield Basin, the Antarctic with AUH (Autonomous Underwater Hydrophne) which was designed to record abyssal T-waves generated from submarine earthquakes. The data obtained from a multi-channel seismic survey and an AUH were used for this study. A seismic reflection method was applied to the multi-channel seismic survey data in order to identify bathymetry and sedimentary structures, and the signals recorded in the AUH were used to obtain deep structures as we applied a seismic refraction method. Even though we couldn’t investigate deeper and detailed structure in study area because of lack of Airgun’s capacity, the AUH showed possibilities for being used for a marine seismic survey. From this experiment, we decided the upper and lower sediment layer velocities, detected irregular basement topography probably caused by submarine volcanic/magmatic activities, and retrieved the velocity of the basement and the depth of the sediment layer/basement boundary.

  • Recently, UUVs (unmanned underwater vehicles) have increasingly been applied in various science and engineering applications. In-water inspection, which used to be performed by human divers, is a potential application for UUVs. In particular, the operational safety and performance of in-water inspection missions can be greatly improved by using an underwater robotic vehicle. The capabilities of hovering maneuvers and automatic image mosaicking are essential for autonomous underwater visual inspection. This paper presents the development of a hover-capable autonomous underwater vehicle system for autonomous in-water inspection, which includes both a hardware platform and operational software algorithms. Some results from an experiment in a model basin are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed system and algorithms.

  • An underwater speaker was designed and used as sound source for thronging shoal of squid in squid angling gear operation. The frequency characteristics of the designed speaker was analyzed experimentally and the thronging response of shoals of squid which may be a key parameter for a new sound catching method, was characterized in audible frequency. The field experiment was carried out in the coast of Cheju Island. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. Amplitude response of the speaker shows a maximum in their the frequency of 500Hz. 2. The output waveform distortion is not measured in the frequency range of 250~600Hz. 3. A underwater noise of shoals of squid which were thronged by fish lamp in night appeared the center frequency of 300~400Hz. 4. The shoals of squid shows a thronging response, when a manufactured underwater speaker transmits a intermittent audible sound of 300~400Hz in 10m depth of water.

  • The authors carried out a field experiment to confirm the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish schools in a setnet in the coast of Cheju Island. The effects of the acoustic emission on the luring of fish schools were observed using a manufectured underwater speaker in the setnet, and pure sound, of which frequency was 600Hz and the source level was 126dB, was emitted on and off at 5 minutes intervals in the set net during the night of ,July 29 and ,July 31. So we had recorded behavior of fish schools by the telesounder with two channel and shape of the setnet by underwater video camera and analyzed them. When the flood and ebb currents were around the setnet, the nets rised to the surface of water and it happened occasionaly at the stand of tide. Therefore, it was in the state that fish schools feel constraint to enter into the setnet, and was required a new design of the setnet stand up to strong tidal current. As the pure sound, of which frequency was 600Hz was emitted for the luring of fish schools in a setnet, the catch ammounts of fish, the young horce mackereWI'rachllrlls japonicus), was increased 4~6 times than not emitted.

  • In the design of an of offshore structure located near an underwater shoal, the same amount of attention given to the wave height may have to be put to the wave induced current as well since some of the wave energy translates to the current. In the present study, two numerical models each based on the nonlinear Boussinesq equation and the linear mild slope equation are applied to calculate the wave deformation and secondly induced current around a shoal. The underwater shoal in Vincent and briggs' experiment (1989) is used here, and all non-breaking wave conditions of the experiment with various monochromatic and unidirectional or multidirectional spectral wave incidences are concerned. Both numerical models clearly showed wave induced currents symmetrically farmed along the centerline over the shoal. The calculated wave heights along a preset line also generally showed very nice agreements with the experimental values.

  • Recently the use of the underwater concrete with the antiwashout admixture is increased considerably. When we intend to apply it to the field, we must consider the water temperature effect. In this study, we investigate the properties of setting time, early strength, hydration temperature history and core strength with the antiwashout underwater concrete in the water temperature 8$^{\circ}C$, 14$^{\circ}C$ and 22$^{\circ}C$ respectively. As a result of experiment, as the water temperature is decreasing, setting time is delayed twice of three times and early strength is lower from 10% to 50%. Therefore to compensate the decrease of the early strength, we used the accelerator and investigated the concrete properties.

  • Acoustic telemetry is a useful method to investigate fish behavior and is widely used to obtain biological information. In this study, the detection ability of a mooring-type acoustic telemetry system and the seasonal changes were studied for survey design and data analysis. The system detection range was examined with an underwater noise model, and seasonal changes were estimated with a ray-tracing program and underwater temperature profile data. The field experiment was conducted with two sets of pingers and six receivers to estimate the difference in detection rate by installation depth and to compare the model estimate. Results indicated that the long-range detection ability of the acoustic telemetry system was significantly affected by underwater temperature. The detection rate rapidly decreased near the sea surface or bottom despite that the near-range Signal to noise ratio was sufficient.

  • This paper proposes Snapping Shrimp Noise (SSN) detection and corrupted Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) reconstruction methods to increase Bit Error Rate (BER) performance when OFDM transmitted signal is corrupted by impulsive SSNs in underwater acoustic communications. The proposed detection method utilizes multilayer wavelet packet decomposition for detecting impulsive and irregularly concentrated and SSN energy in specific frequency bands of SSN, and the proposed reconstruction scheme uses iterative decision directed-subcarrier reconstruction to recover corrupted OFDM signals using multiple carrier characteristics. Computer simulations were executed to show receiver operating characteristics curve for the detection performance and BER for the reconstruction. The practical ocean experiment of SAVEX 15 demonstrated that the proposed method exhibits a better detection performance compared with conventional detection method and improves BER by 250% and 1230% for uncoded and coded data, respectively, compared with the conventional reconstruction scheme.
