  • The increasing elderly population has created an urgent need for well-managed convalescent hospitals, which should provide appropriate clinical nutrition services. The new accreditation policy requiring participation of all convalescent hospitals since 2013 may promote improvement of clinical nutrition services. This study examined whether or not the accreditation policy has increased practice level and dietitians' perception of the importance of clinical nutrition management. Of the 177 convalescent hospitals accredited by January 30, 2014, dietitians from 73 hospitals (41.2%) completed the survey questionnaire. The pre-tested questionnaire surveyed general characteristics of the hospital and dietitians, current status of clinical nutrition management, and changes in the perception and practice levels of various aspects of food and clinical nutrition management. In average, dietitians with more than 5 years of work experience (68.1%) provided food and clinical nutrition services (71.2%). After accreditation, dietitians' perception of the importance and practice level of clinical nutrition service increased (P<0.001). Level of perception, however, was significantly (P<0.001) higher than practice level before and after accreditation. During perception and practice level of initial nutrition assessment, a compulsory accreditation item, notably and significantly (P<0.001) improved after accreditation. The significant difference between perception and practice level disappeared after accreditation. In conclusion, the accreditation process had positive effects on clinical nutrition management in terms of dietitians' perception and practice levels. Making more accreditation items compulsory and providing motivation and professional education to dietitians in convalescent hospitals could lead to additional improvements.

  • Psychiatric nursing is a specialty where nursing students experience many difficulties in applying what they have learned in theory to clinical practice. Therefore, a situation-oriented case-based strategy is required to help them overcome the limitations of psychiatric nursing clinical practice and reduce their burden. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of a psychiatric nursing clinical practice program using situation-oriented case-based learning. Participants comprised 63 nursing students in psychiatric nursing classes. The students were asked to create a scenario of interaction between a nurse and patient based on a case study. Empathy, therapeutic communication ability, and attitudes toward mental illnesses were measured. We analyzed the effectiveness of the program by comparing changes in the nursing students' empathy, therapeutic communication ability, and attitude toward mental illness after the program. The participants showed significant increases in empathy and therapeutic communication abilities. However, there were no significant changes in attitudes toward mental illnesses. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that situation-based learning will be effective for students who have difficulties in certain aspects, such as COVID-19, or where there are limited clinical practice opportunities, such as psychiatric nursing.

A questionnaire on awareness was conducted to examine the attitude toward EBP, the educational experience of EBP, and the performance ability of EBP. A questionnaire consisted of items on the general characteristics, the attitude toward EBP, the educational experience of EBP, and the performance ability of EBP of the subjects. Data analysis was made by IBM SPSS Statistics Ver. 20. The EBP awareness was examined by the independent t-test. Results. For the attitude toward EBP, there was a statistically significant difference in the item of 'Therapists should judge whether they apply study results to individual patient. For the educational experience of EBP, there was no statistically significant difference in all items. For the performance ability of EBP, there was a statistically significant difference in the item about the ability to understand patient's desire for treatment and treatment preference and the item about the ability to determine appropriate treatment process in cooperation with patients. Conclusions. Both two groups showed very low results in the attitude toward EBP, the educational experience of EBP, and the performance ability of EBP. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance EBP education in undergraduate programs and the clinical field.

  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the experience of incivility in clinical practice and stress coping strategies among students enrolled in the Department of Dental Hygiene with clinical practice experience. The study randomly sampled subjects from a group of 150 dental hygiene students attending the Chungcheong area. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation analysis were conducted. The trainees experienced a level of incivility of 1.69, and their level of coping with the resulting stress was 2.58. The study found significant results in terms of gender, clinical practice, and major satisfaction when examining the incivility experienced by trainees based on general characteristics. Among these general characteristics, there were statistically significant differences in the avoidance focus among the sub-domains depending on the grade, number of practicums, and satisfaction with clinical practice. Additionally, the problem-solving focus showed significant results depending on satisfaction with the major. The incivility experienced by trainees showed a positive correlation with avoidance-oriented coping among stress coping strategies (r=.268), social support-seeking coping (r=-.045), and problem-solving-oriented coping (r=-.034) was found to have a negative correlation. If you find yourself in a situation where you encounter incivility, it is believed that developing communication skills and assertiveness training can help you respond more actively instead of passively, which is an avoidance-oriented approach. In addition, it is important to consider that schools and training organizations should collaborate to establish an official reporting system to ensure that any instances of incivility experienced by trainees are not ignored.

  • Background: The objective of the present study was to specifically divide the various work performed by dental hygienists in clinical practice for legal amendments regarding problems associated with conflict between job roles and illegal delegation to establish key basic data for legislation and policy utilization for realization of legal scope of dental hygienists. Methods: The study used work reports drafted based on research methods in the "Second Job Analysis Report on Dental Hygienists" researched by the Korean Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute in 2012 and "Opinions of Dentists on Actual and Legal Work of Dental Hygienists," a report published by the Korean Dental Hygienists Association. Of these, the study focused on conservation dentistry, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and dental implant treatment, which make up some of the fields covered by dental hygiene practice, to investigate and analyzed work performed by clinical experience. Results: Analysis of work actually performed in dental practice showed that for work related to 33 items presented in the study methods, the participants responded that they are currently performing such work or are likely to perform such work in the future, although there were differences by year. Investigation by type of workplace showed that dental hygienists working in university hospitals could perform the work presented if they had ≥5 years of dental hygienist experience, whereas dental hygienists working in dental clinics or hospitals could perform simple duties in their first year and performed more diverse duties with greater degree of difficulty after their second to fourth year. Conclusion: The reality that medical assistance during surgical operations and various procedures that is still being performed is no longer legally protected directly contradicts the needs in dental practice, and thus, there is the need to amend laws that are realistic by clearly recognizing the work of dental hygienists.
