In recent years, polymer concrete based on polyester resin have been widely generalized and the research of polymer concrete have been actively pursued by the technical innovations. Polymer concrete is a composite consisting of aggregates and an organic resin binder that hardens by polymerization. Polymer concrete are stronger by a factor of three or more in compression, a factor of four to six in tension and flexural and a factor of two in impact when compared with portland cement concrete. In view of the growing use of polymer concrete, it is important to study the physical characteristics of the material, emphasizing the short term properties as well as long term mechanical behavior. If polymer concrete is to be used in flexural load-bearing application such as in beam, it is imperative to understand the deformation of the material under sustained loading conditions. This study is proposed to empirical and mechanical model of polymer concrete tension creep using long-term experimental results and mathematical development. The test results showed that proposed model has been used successfully to predict creep deformations at a stress level that was 20 percent of the ultimate strength and viscoelastic behavior of recycled-PET polymer concrete is linear of stress level up to 30 percent. It is expected that the present model allows more realistic evaluation of varying stresses in polymer concrete structures with a constant loading.

An experimental study on the failure of aluminum sandwich joints under shear loading was conducted. A total of 60 specimens including three different insert types and two different potting types were fabricated and tested. The test results showed that the through-clearance type of joint fails at the highest load among insert type joints. The failure load of the potted joints with the dimple washer increased by 10% compared to the simple potted joints. As expected, the shear failure load became higher in accordance with the face thickness increase. It was also found that the upper face in contact with the loading tool is more dominant over the failure load.

This study investigates the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) T-shaped columns under low cyclic loading tests. Based on test results of ten half-scale column specimens, failure patterns, hysteretic behavior, skeleton curves, ultimate strength, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity were analyzed. The main variables included loading angles, axial compression ratios and steel ratios. The test results show that the average values of the ductility factor and the equivalent viscous damping coefficient with respect to the failure of the columns were 5.23 and 0.373, respectively, reflecting good seismic performance. The ductility decreased and the initial stiffness increased as the axial compression ratio of the columns increased. The strength increased with increasing steel ratio, as expected. The columns displaced along the web had higher strength and initial stiffness, while the columns displaced along the flange had better ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Based on the test and analysis results, a formula is proposed to calculate the effective stiffness of SRC T-shaped columns.
A concentric braced steel frame is a very efficient structural system because it requires relatively smaller amount of materials to resist lateral forces. However, primarily developed as a structural system to resist wind loads based on an assumption that the structure behaves elastically, a concentric braced frame possibly experiences the deterioration in energy dissipation after brace buckling and the brittle failure of braces and connections when earthquake loads cause inelastic behavior. Consequently, plastic deformation is concentrated in the floor where brace buckling occurs first, which can lead to the rupture of the structure. This study suggests reinforcing H-shaped braces with non-welded cold-formed stiffeners to restrain flexure and buckling and resist tensile force and compressive force equally. Weak-axis reinforcing members (2 pieces) developed from those suggested in previous studies (4 pieces) were used to reinforce the H-shaped braces in an inverted V-type braced frame. Monotonic loading tests, finite element analysis and cyclic loading tests were carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced braces and frames. The reinforced braces satisfied the AISC requirement. The reinforcement suggested in this study is expected to prevent the rupture of beams caused by the unbalanced resistance of the braces.

To investigate the effects of powder shape on U loading density of fuel meat, two kinds of fuel meats were prepared with atomized and comminuted U$_3$Si$_2$ powders by extrusion or rolling process. Extruded fuel meats with atomized spherical U$_3$Si$_2$ powder appeared to have much less porosity than those with comminuted irregular U$_3$Si$_2$ powder at higher U$_3$Si$_2$ fraction- The U$_3$Si$_2$ particles with spherical shape are less fractured in extrusion than in rolling. Most of atomized particles on the whole maintained to have spherical shapes in the extrusion. It has been shown that atomized spherical particles are expected to approach similar upper loading limits comparing with comminuted particles in rolled plates, but exceed comminuted powder loading limits in extruded rods.
Reliable and accurate method of computationally aided design processes of advanced thin walled structures in automotive industries are much essential for the efficient usage of smart materials, that possess higher energy absorption in dynamic compression loading. In this paper, most versatile components i.e., thin walled crash tubes with different geometrical profiles are introduced in view of mitigating the impact of varying cross section in crash behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Apart from the geometrical parameters such as length, diameter and thickness, the non-dimensionalized parameters of average forces which control the plastic bending moment for varying thickness has explored in view of quantifying its impact on the crashworthiness of the structure. The explicit finite element code ABAQUS is utilized to conduct the numerical studies to examine the effect of parametric modifications in crash behavior and energy absorption. Also the simulation results are experimentally validated. It is evident that the circular cross-sectional tubes are preferable as high collision impact shock absorbers due to their ability in withstanding axial and oblique impact loads effectively. Furthermore, the specific energy absorption (SEA), crash force efficiency (CFE), plastic bending moment, peak force responses and its impact for optimally tailoring a design to cater the crashworthiness requirements are investigated. The primary outcome of the study is to provide sufficient information on circular tubes for the use of energy absorbers where impact oblique loading is expected.

Topside areas on an offshore oil and gas platform are highly susceptible to explosion. A blast wall on these areas plays an important role in preventing explosion damage and must withstand the expected explosion loads. The uniformly distributed loading condition, predicted by Explosion Risk Analyses (ERAs), has been applied in most of the previous analysis methods. However, analysis methods related to load conditions are inaccurate because the blast overpressure around the wall tends to be of low-level in the open area and high-level in the enclosed area. The main objectives of this paper are to study the effects of applying different load applications and compare the dynamic responses of the blast wall. To do so, various kinds of blast pressures were measured by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations on the target area. Nonlinear finite element analyses of the blast wall under two types of identified dynamic loadings were also conducted.

This paper discusses a harmonic response estimation method on the L$\acute{e}$vy plate with two opposite edges simply supported and the other two edges having free boundary conditions. Since the equation of motion of the plate is not self-adjoint, the modes are not orthogonal to each other on the domain. Noting that the L$\acute{e}$vy plate can be expressed using one term sinusoidal function that is orthogonal to other sinusoidal functions, this paper suggested the calculation method that is equivalent to finding a least square error minimization solution of the finite number of algebraic equations. Example problems subjected to a distributed area loading and a distributed line loading are defined and their solutions are provided. The solutions are compared to those of the commercial code, ANSYS. According to the verification results, it is expected that the suggested method will be useful to predict the forced response on the L$\acute{e}$vy plate with the distributed area or line loading conditions.
Plate anchors are generally used for structures like transmission towers, mooring systems etc. where the uplift and lateral forces are expected to be predominant. The capacity of anchor plate can be increased by the use of geosynthetics without altering the size of plates. Numerical simulations have been carried out on three different sizes of square anchor plates. A single layer geosynthetic has been used as reinforcement in the analysis and placed at three different positions from the plate. The effects of various parameters like embedment ratio, position of reinforcement, width of reinforcement, frequency and loading amplitude on the pull out capacity have been presented in this study. The load-displacement behaviour of anchors for various embedment ratios with and without reinforcement has been also observed. The pull out load, corresponding to a displacement equal to each of the considered maximum amplitudes of a given frequency, has been expressed in terms of a dimensionless breakout factor. The pull out load for all anchors has been found to increase by more than 100% with embedment ratio varying from 1 to 6. Finally a semi empirical formulation for breakout factor for square anchors in reinforced soil has also been proposed by carrying out regression analysis on the data obtained from numerical simulations.
In the present numerical analysis, investigation of the effect of blade loadings from design shape on the slip factor variation was studied. Both the Eckardt radial bladed impeller and the backswept impeller were analyzed. In addition, a new design of the blade profile was arbitrarily attempted to generate a center-loading pattern in the original backswept impeller. Three dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes flow analysis with the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was applied to get the numerical slip factor at each impeller exit plane using the mass-averaging technique. The numerical slip (actors are in good agreement with the experimental ones and the Wiesner's slip factors deviate further from the numerical and experimental ones in both backswept impellers. Deviation angles and meridional channel loadings are found in no relation with the trend of change of the slip factor. Blade-to-blade loadings in midspan location are, however, found to have a direct relationship, especially at the sections where maximum loadings we to be expected. That information can be utilized in establishing an improved expression for slip factors in the future.
