In just-in-time production systems, U-shaped production lines rather than traditional straight lines are often adopted since they have some advantages. The advantages of U-lines over straight lines are that the workstations required can be reduced and the necessary number of workers can be easily adjusted when the demand rates are changed. In this paper, we present a new heuristic based on genetic algorithm to improve the workload smoothness in the U-line. In the proposed algorithm, a new genetic representation is developed which is specific to the problem being solved. To enhance the capability of searching good solutions, genetic operators are designed by using the problem-specific information and heuristics. Extensive experiments are carried out on well-known test-bed problems in the literature to verify the performance of our algorithm. The computational results show that our algorithm is a promising alternative to existing heuristics.

The factory under this study consists of mixed-model assembly lines and workcenters which provide parts to the main lines. Parts produced by the workcenter have different specifications for different product models. The workcenters fabricate parts in batches, and they are divided into two types. A type 1 center supplies parts only to the main line that is designated to the center while type 2 center provides parts to all the main lines. The purpose of this study is to develop a scheduling scheme for the workcenter, and the main objective of the schedules is to provide parts for the main lines without delay. The facts that make the scheduling challengeable are that 1) the different models existing together on a main line request different parts, 2) the spaces for part inventories are limited and 3) set up times are sequence dependent and long in some cases. This study presents developed scheduling schemes for the type 1 center and explains the scheduling and control structure used.
Constructing the influence lines of forces of statically indeterminate structures is a traditional issue in structural engineering and mechanics. However, the existing kinematic method for establishing these force influence lines is an indirect or mixed approach by combining the force method with the theorem of reciprocal displacements, which is yet inconsistent with the kinematic method for statically determinate structure. This paper proposes the direct kinematic method in conjunction with the load-displacement differential relation for exactly constructing influence lines of reaction and internal forces of indeterminate structures. Firstly, through applying the principle of virtual displacement, the formula for influence lines of reaction and internal forces of indeterminate structure via direct kinematic method is derived based on the released structure. Then, a computational approach with a clear concept and unified procedure as well as wide applicability based on the load-displacement differential relation of beam is suggested to achieve conveniently the closed-form expression of force influence lines, and exactly draw them. Finally, three representative examples for constructing force influence lines of statically indeterminate beams and frame illustrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Nowadays the diversity and large-capacity of electric appliances are strong effect on electrical fires augment in an alarming way. But, as the inactive response characteristics of the existing RCD (Residual Current protective Device) used on low voltage power distribution lines, so control of overload and electric short circuit faults, major causes of electrical fires, are not enough. Therefore this paper is confirmed the unreliability of the existing RCD by electrical faults simulation and is proposed a auxiliary trip device of RCD by using a high precision current sensor (namely, reed switch) for the prevention of electrical disasters in low voltage power distribution lines caused by overload or electric short circuit faults. The sensitive reed switch in the proposed ATD (auxiliary trip device) exactly detects the increased magnetic flux with the overload or the short current caused by a number of electrical faults, and then rapidly cuts off the existing RCD. The proposed auxiliary trip device of RCD is confirmed the excellent characteristics in response velocity and accuracy in comparison with the conventional circuit breaker through various operation performance analysis. The proposed ATD can also prevent electrical disaster, like as electrical fires, which resulted from the malfunction and inactive response characteristics of the existing RCD.
The production of advanced high strength steels requires the improvement of cooling technology. The use of high cooling rates allows relatively low levels of expensive alloying additions to ensure sufficient hardenability. In classical annealing and hot-dip galvanizing lines a mixing station is used to provide atmosphere gas containing 3-5% hydrogen and 97-95% nitrogen in the various sections of the furnace, including the rapid cooling section. Heat exchange enhancement in this cooling section can be insured by the increased hydrogen concentration. Drever International developed a patented improvement of cooling technology based on the following features: pure hydrogen gas is injected only in the rapid cooling section whereas the different sections of the furnace are supplied with pure nitrogen gas; the control of flows through atmosphere gas management allows to get high hydrogen concentration in cooling section and low hydrogen content in the other furnace zones. This cooling technology development insures higher cooling rates without additional expensive hydrogen gas consumption and without the use of complex sealing equipments between zones. In addition reduction in electrical energy consumption is obtained. This atmosphere control development can be combined with geometrical design improvements in order to get optimised cooling technology providing high cooling rates as well as reduced strip vibration amplitudes. Extensive validation of theoretical research has been conducted on industrial lines. New lines as well as existing lines, with limited modifications, can be equipped with this new development. Up to now this technology has successfully been implemented on 6 existing and 7 new lines in Europe and Asia.
Our understanding of the relationships between genes, brains, and behaviors has changed a lot since the first behavioral mutants were isolated in the fly bottles of the Benzer lab at Caltech (1), but Drosophila is still an excellent model system for studying the neurobiology of behavior. Recent advances provide an unprecedented level of control over fly neural circuits. Efforts are underway to add to existing GAL4-driver lines that permit exogenous expression of genetic tools in small populations of neurons. Combining these driver lines with a variety of inducible UAS lines permits the visualization of neuronal morphology, connectivity, and activity. These driver lines also make it possible to specifically ablate, inhibit, or activate subsets of neurons and assess their roles in the generation of behavioral responses. Here, I will briefly review the extensive arsenal now available to drosophilists for investigating the neuronal control of behavior.
Generally, the assembly system relied on conveyor lines is efficient for mass production. But it is not efficient when the product types are often varying and their lot sizes are small. Especially, it is much inefficient for the assembly lines for the electronic products whose types are varying very often. This paper suggests the design of U-shaped assembly lines to replace the existing conveyor systems. The assembly line for the mini-cassette production is dealt with as a case study. The proposed procedure was successfully applied for the design of U-shaped lines. The developed method resulted in the improvement of the productivity such as the decrease of the man power and the cycle time, and the increase of the line utility.

High packet loss rate and impatience of messages passing through optical switches are essential characteristics in Optical Burst Switching system equipped with Optic Delay Lines buffer, which have not been solved efficiently yet by current existing models. In order to capture both effects, this paper introduces an analytical model from the viewpoint of classical queuing theory with impatient customers. We then apply it to evaluate and compare two wavelength-sharing cases, (1) all delay lines share a common wavelength resource and (2) each wavelength is associated with a number of delay lines. Our numerical results suggest to implement the first case because of lower packet loss rate for a fairly broad range of traffic load.
We studied the hour-lines of six extant Yangcheon-cheoks in Korea. To find whether Yangcheon-cheok was used in the whole area of Korea, we calculated the length of shadows of Yangcheon-cheok on the Korean Peninsula, Nanjing and Beijing as well as Hanyang (Seoul), according to 24 solar terms. Comparing the length of shadows with hour-lines of those relics, we could find that Yangcheon-cheok was suitable for use at limited times (from 9:00 to 15:00) during the year. Also, this sundial is more appropriate for use at low latitudes than high ones. Among existing relics, that of Seoul Museum of History made with porcelain was much more suitable to use at Hanyang and its higher latitude. Lee's collection was also suitable to use at Nanjing. It is certain that Yangcheon-cheok was a portable sundial which could be used from nine to fifteen of clock all the year around except for the winter season.
The radio noise produced by corona discharge in high voltage transmission tines is one of the most important line design considerations. Therefore it is necessary to pre-evaluate radio noise for transmission line designers using Prediction formulas or field test results. In this Paper, more accurate and useful formulas for Predicting radio noise during fair and foul weathers in AC transmission lines were proposed through comparison with the existing formulas. Also it was verified by comparing with the long-term measured data from operating lines that the Proposed formulas are very accurate. The Proposed prediction formulas are developed by the applications of nonlinear least square optimization method to radio noise database collected from lines throughout the world.
