  • Richard Meier has earned his recognition by developing his unique design approach and keeping consistency in design concept in museum architecture over the years of his practice. The purpose of this study is finding common characteristics of the exhibition space spatial organization based on actual site visit analysis. This study will mainly focus on the museums Richard Meier designed between 1979, which is the year he started, until 1997 which is the year Getty Museum opened. For the purpose of this study, Museum of Applied Art, Frankfurt(1979-85), High Museum of Art, Atlanta(1980-83), Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona(1987-95), and The J.Paul Getty Museum(1984-1997) have been selected for analysis. This study will reveal fundamental characteristics of Richard Meier's architectural philosophy through his early residential projects and give background information of the 'white architecture' Close analysis will continue by reviewing four museums selected specifically for this study and focus more from the point of issues such as; 1)applying various axis in space programming, 2)symbolic significance of exhibition space, 3)hierarchy of each space, 4)design elements and characteristics of the exhibition space. Furthermore, quantitative research on exhibition space organization will be done by Space Syntax theory method. The result of the study will be a significant data in designing a modern museum.

  • Nowadays, the constructions of dams are being issued by the public due to the preservation and protection of nature considered more important than development. These social phenomenon can not be evitable due to arguing the both attitudes, preservation and development of nature. However, There are possibilities to make an agreement with the compromise between the two sides. The common goals of the attitudes are concerning human beings and their life quality. In this atmosphere, the exhibition hall of dams is very important to lead the agreement of both groups because the spaces not only provide contents to compromise by showing positive factors of dams, but present condition of using water as natural resources. The purpose of this study is based on the effect of the applied media in an exhibition hall as presenting education and enlightenment factors. To examine the effect, this study categorizes the existing media by communication types firstly. Secondly, based on the categorization, existing media of each dam exhibition hall are analyzed by numerical way. Thirdly, the general characteristics of applied media are defined by integrating the spatial contents and media. The data from the study are effective to provide the basic data for following design works for the exhibition space.

  • Since the late 20C, the development of informative electronic technology has expanded human beings' spatial recognition from three-dimension into multi-dimension. Also space has formed mutual organic relation with the human being, since they started having the image responding ability of experience and recognition. The mutual organic relation has appeared in exhibition space aggressively introduced informative electronic technology from existing physical space. Therefore, m carried out a compartive study into the status of exhibition facilities and the form of interaction focusing on exhibition facilities as a medium of interaction between information and users in experiential exhibition space to which informative electronic technology had been introduced. The ultimate purpose of the study was that the phenomena, which had been anticipated from happenings in mutual organic relation between human beings and space, was reflected on space as a place of various communication activities. Hereafter, researches and studies on further exhibition should be continued to clarify the mutual relationship between exhibition space and user trends not only through exhibition space but also through the study of user trends that are changing everyday.

  • The current representative supporting tool for seeing an exhibition is PDA, which is an information provider that is being activated in famous galleries in the world. It has been successful in making spectators' traffic line for exhibition free and in Overcoming time and spatial restrictions, but it still provides uniform information. And the field of its activities is 'inside' of an exhibition hall so it has some limitations in terms of two-directional communication. In order to overcome such limitations, this study intends to deduce applications for the activation of continuous communication in the changing exhibition environment from before spectators see an exhibition to after they see an exhibition, to design a prototype, and further, to improve the level of the exhibition culture.

  • Human beings are having suffered from the unexpected climate changes which are caused by global warming leaded from air pollution. More than 3 billions of people will be forced to experience insufficient water in 2015. In Korea, over 70% of precipitation has been concentrating in Summer season. Furthermore, natural disasters has been occurred constantly all over the country. The unusual flood and drought have broken out not only victims but also, property damages. By the natural condition, the effective consuming and controlling system of water is going to be the core business field and constructing dams will be encouraged and promoted for the system. To convince the objectionable against the constructing dams, a dam exhibition center stands the very important position by being responsible for the presenting positive factors and highlighting the beneficial functions. The dam exhibition center is built as complex space combined by information center regarding water resources and visitor center for the community nearby the inundated area. Combined of the different purposes, the dam exhibition center can be confused to understand the concept and contents established in the space. To enhance the visitors' understanding contents of the dam exhibition center, the spatial composition and contents are being analyzed with existing centers and define the most effective exhibition methods between the spaces and visitors. This study will be the basic quantitative analysis data for the following design works those can get the better insight how to make visitors to get information and agreement of constructing dams effectively.

  • Recently, exhibition space has incorporated a format in which visual contents providers and viewers can directly or indirectly experience the space with a sense of immersion. By offering more extended spatiality within a limited space, such exhibition design is now transcending physical limitations and expanding to visual reality; as such, exhibition design demands the implementation of not only visual elements but information services generated between people, contents, and objects. To this end, this study examines the changes and the development direction of exhibition techniques that use Internet of Things (IoT), which is a representation of environmental change in exhibition design of our times; it also explores the various forms of change based on the perception of the visual contents (visual exhibits) users during the act of accumulating and using information through the smartphone communication of viewers who experience the space through IoT. Finally, the study conducts a case study on the relationship between a regular exhibition and an exhibition design that makes use of IoT, in order to propose an exhibition design with which to verify whether the viewers are immersed in and experience a sense of realism from visual contents by identifying the viewers' visual and emotional changes.

  • Currently, as we enter the 21st century, the level and interest of society, culture, economy, and science are rapidly developing, but science education is still struggling. In order to increase the efficiency of science education, it is most important to focus on elementary education based on basic science. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the main causes of Korea's science museum's regression as a museum focusing on experience, interest, and fun such as simple science experience centers and science theme parks. To this end, the influencing factors were identified by applying the algorithm of the actor-based model based on the data on the exhibition space and the exhibition movement of the science museum completed and operated in Korea over the past 5 years, and the problem of the visitor movement in the exhibition space was analyzed through the space system. In this study, it was confirmed that the exhibition environment was the best when the linear plot movement system and the picalesque plot were applied simultaneously in the museum's exhibition narrative theory, and the arrangement of major exhibition spaces, width of exhibition spaces, and separation of spaces for exhibition purposes were derived.

  • This study analyzed visitors' behaviors in the viewpoint of Attraction Power and Holding Power of exhibits on the basis of exhibition layout of real science museums. Through the analysis, the study grasped efficiency of analysis index and exhibition environment elements which might have an effect on planning the exhibition space of a large-scale museum and producing detailed ranges of exhibition. The main indicators used are: 1. Attraction Power: it indicates the relative incidence of people who have stopped in front of an object/exhibit during the exhibition tour. It is calculated by dividing the number of people who stop by the total number of people who have visited the museum or gallery. 2. Holding Power: it measures the average time spent in front of an information/communication element. It is calculated by dividing the average time of stay by the time "necessary" to read an element. As a result of analyzing the exhibition areas of National Science Museum (Daejeon) and National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation(Tokyo), the Holding Power was found to be relatively lower than the Attracting Power. This means that 3.5 out of 10 visitors stop in front of the exhibit in 6 exhibition areas, and among these, only 1/10 is used when compared to the user required time of the exhibits. In other words, like the method of deriving an analysis index, the stage of viewing can be categorized as Attracting Power and Holding Power, and because the stage from Attracting Power to the stage of Holding Power are strongly linked, it shows that it is not easy to display a meaningful result. Except, the general distribution of Attracting Power was shown to be high from the entrance area of the exhibition hall based on the standard of viewing sequence. Also, the Holding Power became sequentially lower according to the sequence of exhibition viewing and displayed a meaningful interrelationship with the distribution ratio of island exhibits. In the case of island exhibition method, it is less influenced by the movement flow of visitors when compared to the wall type method of exhibition and can be understood as an exhibition method that provides spatial chances enabling stopping and viewing.

  • Visitors' behaviors within an exhibition space are a substantial means to grant spatial arrangement and validity of exhibits. Therefore, the study analyzed visitors' behaviors in the viewpoint of attraction power and holding power of exhibits on the basis of exhibition layout of real science museums. As a result, It was expected that attraction power and holding power of exhibit would be increased when moving line of seeing was inductive. However, when the traffic movements of seeing was inductive, repetitive seeing of exhibit was almost never realized and visitors had a strong tendency which viewed on their way of moving without viewing on their way of stopping. On the other hand, it may mean that density of exhibit is low or size of exhibition space is small that most of exhibits within exhibition space have high attraction power and holding power. As Gwacheon National Science Museum, when a museum is composed of many large-scale exhibit halls, it should be formed by separating the main moving line of seeing from the optional moving line of seeing through visitors' natural choice of exhibit and proper inducement of moving line of seeing. In such structure, exhibition environment of the main moving line has an effect on attraction of exhibit and the use of optional moving line acts as a factor to increase attraction. In addition, it is thought that attribute of exhibit and proper arrangement of rest space within exhibition space will increase holding power of exhibit.

  • The museum has steadily been evolved by time with its function and social idea differently. As the museum makes its evolution, its architecture has also been changed. This study aims to find out the characteristics of museum architecture by applying Space Syntax for space correspondence of museum architecture changed by the time. And the characteristics could be used as project guide by making data for building up museum architecture changed by social concept with efficient and functional system. The method of the study is to divide the museum into three generations, and give case for each generation. And the each chosen case was analyzed by convex space of space syntax. The order of the analysis is to divide the case as the unit space, make out the Convex Map. And finally get the analysis variable by carrying out a mathematical operation. The characteristics found in these operations are as follows. First, the major space has been planed for convenience of spectators. Second, exhibition space located on specific area in entire plot planning makes spectators easy to recognize in terms of the line of flow toward exhibition space and also relieves character of major and exhibition space. Third, it is getting hard to comprehend the entire space as forming diverse space in process that museum accepts many request from spectators.
