선박용 디젤 엔진 수트의 발생원에 따른 구조적 특성 연구 (Structural Characteristics of Marine Diesel Engine Soot by Source)

  • 본 연구에서는 IMO의 향후 예상 규제 물질 중 하나인 수트를 선박용 엔진을 대상으로는 최초로 배기 수트와 엔진 수트로 구분하여 구조적 특성의 비교 분석을 시도하였다. 그리고 최근 발표되고 있는 배기 수트 재활용 연구의 연장선상에서 엔진 수트의 재활용 가능성 여부를 확인하기 위하여 2,000℃로 열처리를 시행하였고, 열처리 전·후의 수트를 고분해능 전자현미경과 라만분광법을 통해 분석하였다. 전자 현미경을 통한 분석 결과, 배기 수트와 엔진 수트는 유사한 형태의 나노 구조를 가지고 있으나, 배기 수트는 구형의 1차 입자가 체인형 결합구조를 가지고 있었고, 엔진 수트는 배기 수트에 비해 무정형한 구조가 확인되었다. 라만분광법 분석 결과, 배기 수트와 엔진 수트 모두 D peak(1,350 cm-1)와 G peak(1,580 ~ 1,600 cm-1)가 확인되었다. 다만, G/D ratio는 엔진 수트에 비해 배기 수트가 상대적으로 높게 나타나며, 이는 배기 수트가 더 흑연화 된 구조를 나타냄을 의미한다. 열처리 후의 분석 결과, 엔진 수트도 배기 수트와 유사하게 흑연화가 문제없이 진행됨을 확인하였고, 이를 통해 선박용 디젤엔진에서 발생하는 배기 수트와 엔진 수트 모두 흑연재료로 재활용이 가능함을 확인하였다.

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of ;$NO_x$ and soot emissions under a wide range of engine load have been experimentally investigated by a water-cooled, four-cylinder, indirect injection, four cycle and marine diesel engine operating at two kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of the present study is to develop the EGR control system for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal apparatus with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system which has 6 water injectors(A water injector is made up 144 nozzles with 1.0mm in diameter) is specially designed and manufactured to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines. The intake oxygen concentration obtained by the intake air flow and the oxygen concentration in the recirculated exhaust gas, and the exhaust oxygen concentration measured in exhaust manifold are used to analyse and discuss the influences of EGR on NOx and soot emissions. The experiments are performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions decrease and soot emissions increase owing to the drop of intake oxygen concentration and exhaust oxygen concentration as EGR rate rises. Also, one can conclude that it is sufficient for the scrubber EGR system with a novel diesel soot removal apparatus to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, but not to reduce soot emissions.

The Experimental Investigations of Recirculated Exhaust Gas on Exhaust Emissions in a Diesel Engine

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of NOx and soot emissions under a wide range of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, sw irl chamber type, water-cooled diesel engine operating at three engine speeds. The purpose of this study was to develop the EGR-control system for reducing NOx and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal device with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system was specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The experiments were performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of 4$^{\circ}$ ATDC regardless of experimental conditions. It was found that soot emissions in exhaust gases were reduced by 20 to 70% when the scrubber was applied in the range of the experimental conditions, and that NOx emissions decreased markedly, especially at higher loads, while soot emissions increased owing to the decrease in intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the increase in equivalence ratio as the EGR rate is elevated.

The purpose of this study is to develop the scrubber exhaust gas Recirculation (EGR) control system for reducing $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ emissions. And a novel diesel soot-removal device of cylinder-type scrubber with five water injection nozzles is specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The influences of cooled EGR and water injection. however. would be included within those of scrubber EGR system. In order to survey the effects of cooled EGR and moisture on $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions. the intake mixtures of fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas are heated up using a heater with five heating coils equipped in a steel drum. It is found that intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations are decreased, especially at higher loads. as EGR rate and intake mixture temperature are increased at the same conditions of engine speed and load. and that $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ emissions are decreased. while soot emissions are increased owing to the decrease in intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations and the increase in equivalence ratio. Thus ond can conclude that $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions are considerably influenced by the cooled EGR.

  • Cars are inspected in the transport sector for their ability to achieve the greenhouse gas reduction targets. A vehicle (automobile) inspection broadly consists of regular and total checks, and both the safety level and the amount of exhaust gas are checked simultaneously during a vehicle inspection. This study deals with the efficiency of a soot probe to measure soot emissions from diesel vehicles. When the vehicle exhaust gas measurement is performed, there may be a difference between the exhaust gas temperature and the soot suction amount because of the different shape and angle of the exhaust port for each vehicle type. This may result in some incidents where the correct inspection nonconforming vehicle is not selected. Therefore, in this study, the shape of the probe was improved to increase the soot measurement efficiency under the condition of the exhaust pipe angle change.

Multidimensional Engine Modeling: NO and Soot Emissions in a Diesel Engine with Exhaust Gas Recirculation

  • The effects of EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) on heavy-duty diesel engine performance, NO and soot emissions were numerically investigated using the modified KIVA-3V code. For the fuel spray, the atomization model based on the linear stability analysis and spray wall impingement model were developed for the KIVA-3V code. The Zeldovich mechanism for the formation of nitric oxide and the soot model suggested by Hiroyasu et al. were used to predict the diesel emissions. In this paper, the computational results of fuel spray, cylinder pressure, and emissions were compared with experimental data, and the optimum EGR rates were sought from the NO and soot emissions trade-off. The results showed that the EGR is effective in suppressing NO but the soot emission was increased considerably by EGR. Using cooled EGR, soot emission could be enhanced without worsening of NO.

  • The calibration technique of Time Resolved Laser Induced Incandescence was investigated both experimentally and numerically by using standard-sized carbon black particles for the instantaneous soot measurement at exhaust tail pipe in engine. The carbon black particles (19nm, 25nm, 45nm and 58nm) used in this study are similar, though not identical, to soot particle generated from flame not only in morphology but also in micro-structure. The amount of soot loading in flow was controled by a diluted gas (nitrogen) and was measured by the gravimetric method at exhaust pipe in calibrator. The successful calibrations of primary particle size and soot mass fraction were carried out at the range from 19nm to 58nm and from $0.25mg/m^3$ to $37mg/m^3$ respectively. And based on these results the numerical simulation of LII signal was tuned and the effect of an exhaust temperature variation on the decay rate of LII signal was corrected.

디젤기관 배기 배출물에 있어서 매연 응집체 크기 및 농도의 시간적 계측에 관한 연구 (A Study on Temporal Measurement of Size and Concentration for Soot Aggregates among Exhaust Emissions in Diesel Engines)

  • An optical method to measure the size and number density of soot aggregates in diesel exhaust has been proposed in this study. Two laser beams in co-axial alignment transmit a soot loaded exhaust gas flow, and the transmittance at each wavelength is detected by a photo diode simultaneously. The volume equivalent diameter and number density of soot aggregates in the optical path can be theoretically given by the transmittance values measured at two wavelengths. A test conducted by a single cylinder, 4 cycle, small and DI diesel engine shows that the temporal variations of the size and number density of soot aggregates in the diesel exhaust can be measured by the proposed method at a transient mode operation. It is found that the volume equivalent diameter varied temporally from 70 to 110 nm during the period that high soot concentration is observed. One can also conclude that the optical length longer than 1 m in the dynamic range regarding this method is preferable for measuring soot concentration at the level of $1\;mg/m^3$.

디젤 엔진에서 생성된 크랭크케이스 수트의 재활용 가능성 연구 (Study on the Possibility of Recycling Crankcase Soot from Diesel Engine)

  • 본 연구에서는 선박용 디젤 엔진에서 발생되는 크랭크케이스 수트(soot)의 재활용 가능성을 검토하기 위하여, 수트를 배기관에서 발생하는 수트와 크랭크케이스에서 발생한 수트로 분류하고, 열처리에 따른 수트의 구조적 특성을 분석하였다. 열처리는 아르곤 가스 분위기에서 2,000℃와 2,700℃로 열처리를 수행하였고, 샘플의 구조적 특성 분석을 위해 라만분광법(Raman spectroscopy)과 고분해능 전자현미경(HRTEM)을 활용하였다. 또한, 취득한 HRTEM 이미지를 정량적으로 분석하기 위해 디지털 이미지 처리(Digital Image Processing) 기법을 활용하였다. 라만 분석 결과, 배기 수트와 2,700℃로 열처리한 수트에서 상대적으로 높은 G/D ratio가 나타났다. HRTEM 이미지에서는 두 수트 모두 유사한 형태의 흑연화된 나노 구조를 확인할 수 있었으나, 수트의 종류와 열처리 온도차에 따른 흑연화 정도의 차이를 정량적으로 도출할 수 없는 한계가 있었다. 이에 Digital Image Processing을 통해 HRTEM 이미지의 fringe의 길이와 곡률을 정량적으로 분석하였으며, 라만 분석과 일치하는 결과를 도출할 수 있었다. 이는 배기 수트가 크랭크케이스 수트에 비해 더 흑연화 된 구조를 가지는 것을 의미하며, 더 높은 온도에서 열처리 할 경우 흑연의 구조로 더 잘 발달함을 의미한다. 본 연구의 결과로 크랭크케이스 수트 역시 배기 수트와 마찬가지로 흑연계 재료로 재활용이 가능함을 확인하였다.
