In odrder to survey the emission level of air pollutants from diesel vehicles, was measured CO, HC, NOx and smoke of 4 types of domestic-use diesel engines under various conditions. The emission of CO, HC and NOx tested by 6-Mode test method and smoke emission by full load test met the permissible vehicle emission standard. Pollutant emission rates of diesel engines were different according to engine operating conditions, that is, engine load and engine speed. Generally, CO and HC was emitted more at low load and NOx at high load but the trend was quite different by the type of engines. In exhaust gas, $NO_2$ portion of NOx emission was high, specially at low speed and low load. The correlation equation between CLD(NOx) and NDIR(NO) method of nitrogen of nitrogen oxides analysis was y = 1.10x - 3.48 (y: CLD method) as a result of 6-mode test.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of low-temperature combustion (LTC) on the correlations of combustion characteristics and reduction of exhaust emissions in a small DI diesel engine with biodiesel fuel. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emission characteristics and distribution of nano size particles for biodiesel were investigated. In addition, to evaluate the effect of LTC on the combustion and emission characteristics, 30 and 50% of cooled-EGR rates were investigated. From these results, it revealed that the influence of LTC on the combustion characteristics showed that the ignition delay significantly increased and reduces peak heat release rate of premixed combustion by lowering reaction rate. With 50% EGR and advanced injection timing, soot and $NO_x$ emissions were simultaneously reduced.

In this study, syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel and has hydrogen as a major component, was added to a gasoline engine to improve combustion stability and exhaust emissions of idle state. Syngas fraction of the total supplied fuel varied to 0 %, 25 %, 50 % with various ignition timing and excess air ratio. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to widely extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions. It is supposed that the usage of syngas in the internal combustion engine is an effective solution to meet the future strict emission regulations.
Recently, fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicle has been applied to internal combustion engines, with various purpose. Syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component. It has better effort in combustion characteristics such as wide flammability and hig speed flame propagation. In this study, syngas was added to a gasoline engine for the improvement of combustion stability and exhaust emission in idle state. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range. with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions.

To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. Keywords: 200hp class Turbocharger, Exhaust Gas, Engine Performance, Marine Diesel Engine.
A swirl chamber type diesel engine attachable to 18 kW agricultural tractors was improved to reduce exhaust emissions. Compression ratio and throat area ratio of the combustion chamber were varied to determine optimum combustion conditions. Tests were composed of full load and 8-mode emission tests. Compression ratio was fixed as 21, but the swirl chamber volume was increased by 3.8%. Output power, torque, specific fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature, and smoke level were not considerably different for compression ratios of 21.5 (reference condition) and 21 (test condition), while NOx, HC, CO and PM levels for the compression ratio of 21 were decreased by 11%, 46%, 28%, 11%, respectively, from those for the compression ratio of 21.5. The tests were also conducted with a compression ratio of 22 and 4.3% increased chamber volume. Output power, torque, exhaust gas temperature and smoke level were greater, while specific fuel consumption was less for the compression ratio of 22 than those for the compression ratio of 21.5. Increase of compression ratio decreased HC and CO levels by 24%, 39%, but increased NOx and PM levels by 24%, 39%. Based on these results, a compression ratio of 21 was selected as an optimum value. Then, full load tests with the selected compression ratio of 21 were carried out for different throat ratios of 1.0%, 1.1%, 1.2%. Output power and torque were greatest and smoke was lowest when throat area ratio was 1.1%, which satisfied the target values of specific fuel consumption (less than 272 g/$kW{\cdot}h$) and exhaust gas temperature (less than $550^{\circ}C$). Therefore, a throat area ratio of 1.1% was selected as an optimum value.

The electromechanical valve train (EMV) technology allows for a reduction in fuel consumption while operating under a stoichiometric air-fuel-ratio and preserves the ability to use conventional exhaust gas aftertreatment technology with a 3-way-catalyst. Compared with an engine with a camshaft-driven valve train, the variable valve timing concept makes possible an additional optimization of cold start, warm-up and transient operation. In contrast with the conventionally throttled engine, optimized control of load and in-cylinder gas movement can be used for each individual cylinder and engine cycle. A load control strategy using a "Late Intake Valve Open" (LIO) provides a reduction in start-up HC emissions of approximately 60%. Due to reduced wall-wetting, the LIO control strategy improves the transition from start to idle. "Late Exhaust Valve Open" (LEO) timing during the exhaust stroke leads to exhaust gas afterburning and, thereby, results in high exhaust gas temperatures and low HC emissions. Vehicle investigations have demonstrated an improved accuracy of the air-fuel-ratio during transient operation. Results in the New European Driving Cycle have confirmed a reduction in fuel consumption of more than 15% while meeting EURO IV emission limits.
In this study, the effect of reformer gas(RG) on the performance development of the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) was investigated numerically in $CH_4/air$ premixed flame. Typically EGR is used to reduce the flame temperature and NOx emission, whereas RG can be used to improve the flame stability, such as homing velocity. This competitive relationship is focused in this study. As a result, it can be identified that the adjustments of EGR and RG ratio can achieve the low NOx emission and the similar flame stability to pure $CH_4/air$ premixed flame simultaneously.
As the interest on the air pollution is gradually rising up at home and abroad, automotive and fuel researchers have been working on the exhaust emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative after-treatment systems, using clean (eco-friendly alternative) fuels and fuel quality improvement. This research has brought forward various main issues : whether PM emissions should be regulated for diesel and gasoline vehicles and whether gasoline and LPG powered vehicles can be further neglected from PM emission inventories. Finally, the greenhouse gas regulation has been discussed including automotive emission regulation. The greenhouse gas and emissions of automotive had many problem that cause of ambient pollution, health effects. Based on various test modes and ambient conditions, this paper discusses the characteristics of LPG on exhaust emissions and greenhouse gases. Also, this paper assessed emission characteristics due to the test temperature. These test temperature were performed by dividing the temperature of the test mode and the lowest local temperature in winter. Through this study, the correlation of vehicle test mode and ambient condition, exhaust emission, greenhouse gas emission was analyzed.
The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between observed traffic data and NOx concentrations from not an ideal condition but a real road in real-time. Also we aim to develop an estimation model for NOx emission concentrations due to vehicle exhaust gas, and it can be applied to monitor the degree of air pollution on National Road in real-time. To eliminate outliers which are occurred due to errors of equipments and other variables, we use the robust analysis and develop two models. which are considering and not considering wind impact. The result of this research can be used for understanding present condition of air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust gas and evaluating for environmental effects of transportation policy.
