Thermal and Electronic Properties of Exfoliated Metal Chalcogenides

  • The thermal conductivity of layered metal chalcogenides such as $MT_2$ (M = Mo, W; T = S, Se) shows a marked decrease after exfoliation and subsequent restacking process. Random stacking of two-dimensional crystalline sheets circumvents thermal conduction pathways along a longitudinal direction, which results in a reduction in thermal conductivity. $WS_2$ and $WSe_2$ compounds retain p-type conducting behavior after exfoliation and restacking with decreased electrical conductivity due to the change in carrier concentration. $MoSe_2$ compound exhibits metallic behavior < $130^{\circ}C$ with a small Seebeck coefficient, which results from metastable 1T-$MoSe_2$ structure of the restacked phase.

  • Thermal properties of layered metal chalcogenides such as $WT_2$ (T=S,Se) with two-dimensionally disordered structure were evaluated. Thermal conductivity shows a marked decrease after exfoliation and subsequent restacking because of random stacking of two-dimensional crystalline sheet, which circumvents thermal conduction pathways along longitudinal direction in anisotropic materials.

Chemical Bonding Nature and Mesoporous Structure of Nickel Intercalated Montmorillonite Clay

  • Mesoporous nickel intercalated aluminosilicate nanohybrid has been synthesized through a recombination reaction between the colloidal suspension of exfoliated montmorillonite nanosheets and aqueous nickel acetate solution. According to powder X-ray diffraction and field emission-scanning electron microscopic analyses, the intercalation of nickel species expands significantly the basal spacing of the host montmorillonite clay and the crystallites of the intercalation compound are assembled to form a house-of-card structure. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurements with BJH pore analyses clearly demonstrated that the porosity of the intercalate originates mainly from mesopores (diameter $\sim50\;\AA$) formed by the house-of-card type stacking of clay crystallites. From FT-IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopic analyses, it becomes certain that intercalated nickel ion is stabilized in an isolated $NiO_6$ octahedral unit. The present mesoporous intercalation compound is expected to be applicable as efficient catalysts or absorbents.

박리화와 재적층법을 통한 K2La2Ti3O10부터 유전성 Bi4-xLaxTi3O12(x~2)의 합성 (Preparation of dielectric Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (x~2) from K2La2Ti3O10 via exfoliation and restacking routes)

  • 본 연구팀에서는 층상형 페로브스카이트 구조를 갖는 Ruddlesden-Popper 구조의 $K_2La_2Ti_3O_{10}$의 박리화를 통해 Aurivillius 구조의 $Bi_{4-x}La_xTi_3O_{12}$(x~2) 페로브스카이트 산화물을 성공적으로 합성하였다. 박리화된 란타늄 티타네이트 나노시트는 BiOCl 나노결정구조와 반응시켜 $Bi_{4-x}La_xTi_3O_{12}$(x~2) 결정을 얻어내었다. 박리화된 나노시트 현탁액은 $K_2La_2Ti_3O_{10}$으로부터 수소화된 $H_2La_2Ti_3O_{10}$의 층간에 에틸아민을 삽입시킴으로써 얻어내었다. 투과전자현미경(TEM) 분석을 통해, 란타늄 티타네이트가 에틸아민에 의해 박리화된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. X-선 회절분석(XRD)을 통해, 박리화된 란타늄 티타네이트와 BiOCl의 재적층과정을 거쳐 $700^{\circ}C$ 이상의 열처리 조건에서 $Bi_{4-x}La_xTi_3O_{12}$(x~2)로 형성된 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
