  • The microstructure, flexural properties, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of epoxy composites filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnPs) and CNT-xGnP hybrid filler were investigated. The EMI SE of the CNT-xGnP hybrid composite was higher than 25 dB at 100 MHz while that of the xGnP based composite was almost zero. The flexural modulus of the CNT-xGnP based epoxy composite continuously increased to 3.32 GPa with combined filler content up to 10 wt% while that of the CNT based epoxy composites slightly decreased to 1.96 GPa at 4 wt% CNT, and dropped to 1.57 GPa at 5 wt% loading, which is lower than that of epoxy. The CNT and CNT-xGnP samples had the same EMI SE at the same surface resistivity, because samples with the same surface conductivity have the same amount of the charge carriers.

  • The approach studied in the present work produced an exfoliated state of clay layers via confinement of the charged nano-sized polystyrene (PS) beads within the gallery of swollen pristine clay. It was demonstrated that adsorption of the polymer nanobeads dramatically promotes expansion of the clay gallery. A comparative study of incorporation was conducted by employing organo-modified clay along with two different colloid polymer systems: electrostatically stabilized PS nanobeads and cationic monomer-grafted PS nanobeads. The mechanism of adsorption of the monomer-grafted polymer beads onto clay via cationic exchange between the alkyl ammonium group of the polymer nanobeads and the interlayer sodium cation of the layered silicate was verified by using several techniques. As distinct from the polymer nanobeads formed using conventional miniemulsion polymerization method, competitive adsorption of stabilizing surfactant molecules was be prevented by grafting the surface functional groups into the polymer chain, thereby supporting the observed effective adsorption of the polymer beads. The presence of surface functional groups that support the establishment of strong polymer-clay interactions was suggested to improve the compatibility of the clay with the polymer matrix and eventually play a crucial role in the performance of the final nanocomposites.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the fire retardant performance of exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) applied for particleboard. This work measured heat release rate(HRR), total heat release(THR) and smoke production rate(SPR) of xGnP added particleboard, using cone calorimeter to assess its fire characteristics according to the KS F ISO 5660-1 standard code. Heat release rates of all specimens treated by xGnP were less than the $200kW/m^2$ for a total experiment period of five minutes. Heat release rates of the specimens coated with xGnP were lower than those of the specimens made by mixing wood particles with xGnP directly. Meanwhile, the total heat release rates of xGnP coated specimen maintained quite lower level than the uncoated so the xGnP coating were effective in improving the fire retardant performance of particleboard. However, the smoke emission peaking problem at the initial combustion period, which was caused by adding base coating materials, should be resolved for further satisfaction as a fire retardant materials.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) niobate-based nanosheets have attracted attention as high-k dielectric materials. We synthesized strontiumsubstituted calcium niobate ($Ca_{0.8}Sr_{1.2}Nb_3O_{10}$) nanosheets by a two-step cation exchange process from $KCa_{0.8}Sr_{1.2}Nb_3O_{10}$ ceramic. The $K^+$ ions were exchanged with $H^+$ ions, and then H+ ions were exchanged with tetrabutylammonium ($TBA^+$) cations. The $Ca_{0.8}Sr_{1.2}Nb_3O_{10}$ nanosheets were then exfoliated, decreasing the electrostatic interaction between each niobate layer. Furthermore, $Ca_2Nb_3O_{10}$ nanosheets were synthesized in same process for comparison. Each exfoliated nanosheet shows a single-crystal phase and has a lateral size of over 100 nm. The nanosheets were deposited on a $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrate by the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method at 40 V, followed by ultraviolet irradiation of the films in order to remove the remaining $TBA^+$ ions. The $Ca_{0.8}Sr_{1.2}Nb_3O_{10}$ thin film exhibited twice the dielectric permittivity (~60) and lower dielectric loss than $Ca_2Nb_3O_{10}$ thin films.

  • The investigation has been made on the rocks consisting the pagoda(12), Buddhist Statues(9) Buldaejwa and cakra(2, rewpectively), stele(5), and Flagpole wupport and stupa(6) which are stood in Weonju city, Weonju-gun, Hwoengseong-gun and Hongcheon-gun, Kangweondo. These rock-monuments range mostly in age from late Shilla Kingdom to middle Korye Kingdom. The geology around this region is mainly composed of Precambrian metamorphic rocks and mesozoic granitic rocks. The granitic rocks are largely divided into Jurassic and cretaceous ones which are slightly different in rock phase. The main rock phase consisting the monumentsare are coarse biotite granite with minor amount of hornblende in Jurassic age. Variation in rock phase is abserved even in part of the stone used in the monuments. Inclusions composed of biotite and hornblende, porphyritic texture with microcline phenocryst, igneous lineation and exfoliation according to weathering are observable in all rocks in these monuments. In the case of stele whose a body and a capstone is remained, one is composed of black slate and the other white limestone. But the turtle shaped pedestal is constituted of coarse biotite granite. These stone-monuments are strongly weathered and exfoliated out about 1∼2mm.In case of exfoliated weathering along igneous lineation, some are taken off about 3∼5mm thick. In some monuments, the degree of weathering is somewhat different according to position, grade of sculpture, and biological activity.

  • A mesoporous assembly of layered titanate with well-dispersed Pt cocatalysts has been synthesized via a restacking of exfoliated titanate nanosheets and a simultaneous adsorption of Pt nanoparticles. According to powder X-ray diffraction analysis, the obtained mesoporous assembly shows amorphous structure corresponding to the disordered stacking of layered titanate crystallites. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy and $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement clearly demonstrate the formation of mesoporous structure with expanded surface area due to the house-of-cards type stacking of the titanate crystallites. From high resolution-transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping analyses, it is found that Pt nanoparticles with the size of ~2.5 nm are homogeneously dispersed in the mesoporous assembly of layered titanate. In comparison with the protonated titanate, the present mesoporous assembly of layered titanate exhibits better photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of organic molecules. This finding underscores that the restacking of exfoliated nanosheets is quite useful not only in creating mesoporous structure but also in improving the photocatalytic activity of titanium oxide.

  • n-octadecnae based shape stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) was prepared by using vacuum impregnation method. And an exfoliated graphite nanoplate (xGnP) which has high thermal conductivity properties is used as a PCM container. And then we made heat storage concretes which contains SSPCM for reducing heating and cooling load in buildings. In the prepararion process, the SSPCM was mixed to a concrete as 10, 20 and 30wt% of cement weight. The thermal properties and chemical properties of heat storage concrete were analyzed from Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR), Deferential scanning calorimeter (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TCi thermal conductivity analyzer. And we conducted surface temperature analysis of SSPCM and xGnP by using heat plate and insulation mold.

  • Objective: 12-oxo-5Z,8Z,10E,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid (12-KETE), a metabolite of arachidonic acid, is a strong candidate signal for placenta separation following calf discharge at delivery. In the present study, the effects of 12-KETE on bovine trophoblast cells were investigated to determine its function in the placentome at delivery. Methods: Bovine trophoblast cells derived from blastocysts were used. They were cocultured with or without fibroblasts derived from bovine placentome and/or bovine uterine epithelial cells. 12-KETE was added to the culture medium. Results: Bovine trophoblast cells contained binucleate cells and strongly expressed caudal type homeobox 2 (CDX-2) genes. Addition of 12-KETE to the trophoblast cell colony without feeder cells or that on a fibroblast monolayer induced rapid exfoliation of the colony. After 12-KETE addition, trophoblast cells emitted strong fluorescence caused by the degradation of dye-quenched collagen, indicating that 12-KETE activated matrix metalloproteinase of the trophoblast cells. Exfoliated cell colonies were stained with YOPRO-1, but not propidium iodide (PI). Moreover, DNA fragmentation and Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax) gene (apoptosis stimulator) upregulation were observed in exfoliated cells, indicating that 12- KETE induced trophoblast cell apoptosis. These results were consistent with previous in vivo observations; however, even a lower concentration of 12-KETE activated trophoblast protease. Meanwhile, fibroblasts derived from the bovine placentome converted arachidonic acid to 12-KETE. Conclusion: These observations indicate that 12-KETE may serve as a signal for placenta separation at delivery.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of blood contamination on the Vickers hardness and the surface morphology of premixed MTA and compare them with the effects on conventional MTA. The Vickers microhardness of Endocem MTA Premixed Regular (EP) and ProRoot MTA (PM) was assessed after immersion in fetal bovine serum (FBS) and saline. Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) were seeded on MTA after immersion in FBS, saline, and deionized water (DW). Cell adhesion patterns and surface morphology were visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface microhardness of EP and PM in FBS was lower than in saline. However, short-term exposure of PM to FBS did not reduce the microhardness compared to saline. Angular crystals formed in water, while rounded crystals with more air voids appeared in FBS. Favorable SHED attachment occurred in all groups. Overall, the surface hardness of EP and PM decreased after FBS exposure, although PM was less influenced. We suggest minimizing the amount of bleeding when using MTA clinically; nevertheless, PM remains an option with more expected blood contamination than EP. In summary, exposure to FBS decreased mechanical performance but allowed cell adhesion for both MTAs, with PM being more resistant to these changes.

  • Graphene is one of the most promising materials for many applications. It can be used in a variety of applications not only as a reinforcement material for polymer to obtain a combination of desirable mechanical, electrical, thermal, and barrier properties in the resulting nanocomposite but also as a component in energy storage, fuel cells, solar cells, sensors, and batteries. Recent research at Michigan State University has shown that it is possible to exfoliate natural graphite into graphite nanoplatelets composed entirely of stacks of graphene. The size of the platelets can be controlled from less than 10 nm in thickness and diameters of any size from sub-micron to 15 microns or greater. In this study we have investigated the influence of melt compounding processing on the physical properties of a polyamide 6 (PA6) nanocomposite reinforced with exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP). The morphology, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties of xGnP-PA6 nanocomposite were characterized with electrical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, AC impedance, and mechanical properties. It was found that counter rotation (CNR) twins crew processed xGnP/PA6 nanocomposite had similar mechanical properties with co-rotation (CoR) twin screw processed or with CoR conducted with a screw design modified for nanoparticles (MCoR). Microscopy showed that the CNR processed nanocomposite had better xGnP dispersion than the (CoR) twin screw processed and modified screw (MCoR) processed ones. It was also found that the CNR processed nanocomposite at a given xGnP content showed the lowest graphite X-ray diffraction peak at $26.5^{\circ}$ indicating better xGnP dispersion in the nanocomposite. In addition, it was also found that the electrical conductivity of the CNR processed 12 wt.% xGnP-PA6 nanocomposite is more than ten times higher than the CoR and MCoR processed ones. These results indicate that better dispersion of an xGnP-PA6 nanocomposite is attainable in CNR twins crew processing than conventional CoR processing.
